Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

FAFSA - Started on Saturday and found out one of my accounts had been locked out for not having accessed in over 12 months. So, I couldn’t complete without knowing my balance. :((

I also couldn’t use the data retreival tool due to an identify theft issue (maybe I already said that?). Just got off phone with IRS, where I ordered a 2015 tax transcript for any school that asks for one…just in case, since I had to enter my info by hand.

We are full-pay as well, but my daughter will be getting a federal unsubsidized loan, so I believe we need to fill out the FAFSA. Also, my job is constantly in jeopardy, so there’s that.

Homecoming - I already told you about my daughter’s drunk friend who called to be rescued late Saturday night. She ended up making it home safely, thank goodness.

Not sure how they nominate our homecoming court, and I certainly have no idea of their sexual preference, but I could tell one of them had an LD. They were brought out during halftime of the football game. It was very cool.

@STEM2017 It sounds like you had the perfect financial storm last year. Good luck, I’m sure it will work out.

@VickiSoCal - I here you. It’s just that he will probably end up going there. I’m not putting one down at any other places unless they have some sort of housing shortage…

@MichiganGeorgia …did you already put down the enrollment deposit for UA? We started to then read something on the OU application about enrollment deposits at other colleges. Not for sure what all that means.

I’m one of a decent number of people (judging by the traffic over on the UA forum) who are trapped in the UA housing system not allowing us to sign and pay, so even if it was more than expected, I’m a bit jealous of you, @MichiganGeorgia.

We could move back and forth between need and full pay at pricey schools. It really all depends on my husbands bonus. After running the numbers based on both good years and bad we have decided to not apply to any of them. I don’t want to be in a situation where the bill is too high…

@dfbdfb …which UA forum are you referring to?

@Tgirlfriend, the one here on CC. There’s a thread with a handful of people on it saying they’re facing the same problem I am. If there’s a handful there, I figure it has to be a bit more widespread than that, since it’s only a pretty small number of folks who are around there, really.

@dfbdfb …gotcha. I looked for UA housing forums on here and didn’t see anything current that is why I was asking. I will search again.

My son had the University of rochester on his list? Does this one take away its merit aid each year or is it fixed. He may have to take it off the list

@MichiganGeorgia Out of that $300, isn’t a good portion refundable? Like, $75

I am really on the fence whether to pay that, since it is a safety. @dfbdfb I assume you have moved past that?

@fun1234 …we had it on the list and then took it off. It just seems so far from us and D is just kind of done with the whole process now that she is perfectly fine with her safeties and has some admissions.

If you keep it on the list, you should know they look like they heavily consider interest. If you can’t visit then you should make sure your son contacts the regional admissions officer and schedules a meet up or interview.

Good luck!

@rtidwell, $275 is refundable, but all of the $200 enrollment deposit you have to pay before applying for housing isn’t.

It’s a safety, but a pretty good safety, and we’re good for it, so yeah, it’s essentially just a cost of doing business for our family.

Ah, thanks @dfbdfb. May as well do it before I finish my FAFSA. =))

Today’s goals- sit and do housing deposits for UA, A&M and UT —all will be necessary since the merit aid at her first choice will be a bit of a nailbighter and not known until later this fall. If it doesn’t work out she at least wants one of the nicer dorms at one of her safeties as a consolation prize, lol!

I am being held captive in our bedroom while our floors are being ripped up. I would love to say it was a planned remodel because you know, we have thousands of extra cash floating around right now…but we had a sink/dishwasher leak a few weeks ago and water bubbling up from our hardwood floors. This was how we found out our deductible was now close to $3000! OUCH. ugh. So thankful we have it but seriously had other plans for that $$

@carachel2 university of rochester bausch and lomb science award My son received this at his school so they said he could apply without cost of application, but I want a school that at least keeps its merit the same each year, but I am not sure if people are saying they front load merit also in addition to financial aid

Another CA essay formatting question. Sorry for so many questions, DD came home early from school today to work on the essay. Does anyone have issues with indentation? DD indented first word of each paragraph. But after she cut from Google Drive, and pasted onto Common App, and look at the preview, the indentation disappeared on the preview.
(She is trying to use google Drive first. Common App suggested using Notepad but dd hasn’t used it before so we thought we try Drive first.)

@fun1234 …it sounds like he received an application fee waiver so that is good! He STILL needs to demonstrate interest. We have received many postcards from UR that say “IF you are interested in merit scholarship opportunities THEN you need to meet us! We are on the road and in your area…find us.” I think the best merit will go to the smart kids who display interest.

I did read the article about schools who are bad about front loading merit and UR was on the list…it looked like their awards declined by about 4-5K towards jr and senior years. But I don’t have any personal experience so you should dig around on the UR forum perhaps?

@4beardolls —oh no! I had hoped that problem had gone away. Son has not completed an essay but I recall that nightmare from three years ago. IIRC, my son tried random browsers until he found one that worked. At this point, I have no idea which browser worked and I can’t really believe the CA folks have not fixed that.

Notepad sounds familiar though…

As to the mums…too funny! Now I know something else about Texas.

I thought that “mum” was a mistake for “mom” or there are some British CC moms writing about homecoming.

Words spread via phones that this boy in DD’s physics class was going to ask her for homecoming on Monday. He was making a big sign to ask. Upon learning that, another boy in DD’s circle of friends had to act fast. He mada a quick sign and went to supermarket to buy a dozen roses (with price tag still attched). He and his friend called DD to come over. She went and saw the front hood of his car was decorated with lit candles and George Michael’s Careless Whisper was blasting from the boombox!! He is a good friend and they were going as one big group anyway, so she said yes.

Now the physics class boy was heartbroken with an almost finished sign. DD feels really bad. She said she is more interested in physics boy romantically than the candle boy, but she doens’t know physics boy that well. She will make sure to tell him that candle boy asked her first and they are going as just friends.

It’s like National Geographics birds mating season!! Also I was fascinated by how fast words spread using the modern technology!

That was my weekend.

@HiToWaMom …physics boy and candle boy! Sounds like an awesome 80s movie! I feel kind of bad for Physics boy too. But candle boy had a nice touch with the George Michael song lol
