All of those girls around here like that go to Baylor or TCU thank goodness or University of Arkansas.

@MotherOfDragons UMD’s housing is a negative in D’s view. About one-third of freshmen live in triples or quads. The idea of a quad seriously sent D into a fetal position. Granted, the tripled-quaded students were the last to request housing (ala Bama etc) but still.
@RightCoaster I would submit all in, why not.
Just saying, still waiting to complete a single application here. :)) getting there though… #:-S
@WhereIsMyKindle - Same with DS. He told me to pick schools based on his major choices and said he will decide which one to go based on the visits (after acceptance). He did select his SCEA school though. He asked 4 teachers (math, science, English and foreign language), 2 research mentors (and GC) for LORs. So I had to come up with 7 spreadsheets since not all schools accept more than 2 or other LORs!
Ouch @LoveTheBard
I would submit it and be done @RightCoaster
I bribed D17 with a shopping spree if she would submit her 2 apps this weekend. One is due Nov 1 and the other Nov 15. She just has the EC essay which she needs to edit a little and the Why X? She is dying to get new clothes so maybe this will light the fire under her butt!
Thank you @Mom2aphysicsgeek for your very thoughtful input.
D’s college list ranges from our state flagship and a directional state U (neither highly ranked but both with good honors programs) to small LACs and universities ranked from the mid 20s-60s to one top 20 reach. I think she could be happy at any of them, but probably happiest in the middle range of her list.
I also need to remember that at her age I was much like her - intellectually driven, introverted, and lacking self confidence despite the fact that I had academic awards to my credit. I went to my large, impersonal state U on a full scholarship, thrived in its honors program, and developed close relationships with many of my professors, some of which last to this day. I am sure she is similarly resilient, even if she doesn’t know it yet.
We received an acceptance in our house It is UA which is a safety for ds. It doesn’t have exactly what he wants but we needed a school where he could get a lot of what he wanted and we knew we could afford so the guaranteed Presidential was the lock we needed. Our state schools can’t offer him a better program for the same cost so UA it is. Even though it’s the total safety of the bunch the pressure has lessened just because ds knows he has a place to go no matter what happens with other applications, ROTC scholarships, merit aid, etc. and he feels sure he would love it there and make it all work if that’s where he goes.
Just want to thank everyone for the lively and informative posts in this group. I have learned so much and feel like I found “my people” for this college search when I used to feel like people looked at me like I was crazy for the schools and avenues ds is considering.
Congrats @Collegecue !
That first acceptance definitely boosts confidence and takes some pressure off.
@Collegecue …congrats! Have you guys visited UA yet?
Honestly, for us…it was just a CC mythical safety for a long time. “Oh there’s always Bama…” since she also qualifies for the full tuition, etc.
She had a slight break in her schedule in September so kind of rushed and put together a visit. We were BOTH surprised at how much we really liked it. She actually likes it better than A&M and UT–which is huge. She said it feels homier, she likes the Honors program and can see herself getting involved and honestly she likes that she is guaranteed her engineering major. As a parent, I like that she can switch majors without too much hassle and loss of $$ (something we feel would just be impossible at UT and very tricky at A&M).
Conngratulations @Collegecue ! <:-P <:-P <:-P
Yay @Collegecue!
@carachel2 No we have not visited. Honestly I think he would really like it there but they do not have a program that totally fits what ds wants to study (no Russian major) so he knows if he attends he will need to revisit his language goals or pursue them further outside of school. We are hoping one ( or more) of his other choices that have a better program fit will come back with an acceptance and a financial package that works as well.
Congrats to @Collegecue !! How many parents in this group now with UA kids? Were not 1 of them. Just seems like a lot of you folks are interested in that school.
Thanks for the advice a little bit upthread! I guess we’ll just submit the remaining 2 apps this week and be done with the whole process, then we’ll just be waiting on decisions. I’m feeling proud of my son, he did a great job on his apps and testing this fall. I think he is relieved. Now he just wants to get in somewhere.
Last question from me for the day, if he submits his last 2 apps right now for RD with dates of 1/4/17 and 1/15/17 when should he hear back from those schools? Do they wait until March or so? Or do they admit kids as they go through the apps? I know the EA schools say decisions before xmas or so.
UA accepted kid here. But he needs to get his ACT score up a few points before it becomes affordable.
The Big MAC dream is still alive, but fading.
@RightCoaster, you are correct. There are Many UA folks here. We are one of the accepted. S has little interest. I have a lot. It is a great financial safety for us. If he doesn’t get into dream schools with aid, nor UC’s, then Bama could end up in play come April.
4th application was submitted yesterday. One more is promised by Friday. Yesterday we came out with a plan to complete 4 EA applications in next three weeks, and his ED…Let’s hope it works.
My kid would go to Cal State Fullerton before going to a big southern football school.
And she thinks CSUF is the kiss of death. (It isn’t, but it is local and would involve living at gasp home.
Indiana just began releasing decisions online today. S got in. Waiting on kelly business, which is a month later. S should be an auto admit IU/Kelley with some Merit money is a very Viable safety. I am thinking 11-15 is possible.
When ds applied to Bama several yrs ago, it was not a school either of us thought he would attend. Then, we visited 3 times, spent time in the dept, he won multiple honors from them, etc. Then in the spring when all our FA packages came in, the choices came down to $0 for UA and next closest was 10s of thousands more, the decision was a lot clearer.
And he couldn’t be happier and loves it there. Win- win.
Fwiw, none of us think of Bama as a big football school. Probably sounds counterintuitive. But, it is more of a great school where he has had fabulous opportunities and while he is there, he goes to some great football games. Seriously.
We had a college talk with DS last night. I told him we wanted to visit revisit UA and Ole Miss or see something else because of our 3 day weekend. He was not thrilled. He stated that he doesn’t care if a campus is pretty or not all he wants is to go to a college with decent academics and he’s fine with going to UA. We told him that we should go and visit it this weekend anyway so that he can see it with students on campus. He didn’t see the need to but after talking to him some more he has decided it would be ok to look at it again…
Another UA parent. Working on CBHP essay. A safety for us too, and one which she would be much happier to attend than one where she would have to live at home. Not happening. Plus, she likes football and the social aspect that it brings with it.
