Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@hadmeathello hey, I believe Case is in top 40 ;

Not only I’m a happy grad alumna but also it is high on S17’s list :x

@itsgettingreal17 Sorry to hear about the car trouble. Sounds like it’s time to move on. Hope you can find a good deal soon.

DH maintains and fixes our cars. None of our cars are from this century with close to or over 200K miles each. They are all in great shape. I am hoping (knocking on wood) they last another 200K miles or till D19 graduates college.
USB port? Mine has a casette player. =))

^ @payn4ward and anybody else with CWRU experience - can you tell me how “urban” the campus feels. It was one of two on D’s list that we weren’t able to visit as the campus shut down during the RNC and cancelled D’s visit, interview, etc. She has already applied due to academic fit. But intensely dense urban places are not comfortable for her. So NY and Chicago, no. The more urban/suburban boundaries like the neighborhoods surrounding Macalester in St. Paul and WUSTL are fine.

Google street view was helpful but not quite enough. Thanks!

@payn4ward - DS is also applying for Case (for BS/MD program). My 2002 Acura also has cassette player

@mamaedefamilia I would say Case is towards the higher end of what I would consider ‘urban’. There are nearby parks and green space, but it’s pretty urban. I would compare it to Pitt without the hills. (ETA: actually, there ARE some hills now that I think back)

With that urban-ness comes very convenient access to a couple Cleveland hospitals, in case your kid is pre-med or into health research. The art museum, museum of natural history, and the Cleveland Institute of Music are all within walking distance, as is the subway to downtown. I can’t compare to Macalester.

@srk2017 Good luck to your son!

@mamaedefamilia I am very sorry to hear that your visit was cancelled :frowning:

We visited a few weeks ago and had a wonderful visit. The campus was beautiful and the weather was gorgeous. I joked that this is the perfect PR weather because I know how bitterly cold and gloomy the winter and early spring can be. But S17 has seen cold and snow so he will survive. Maybe lack of sunshine could be harder to deal with but he will have to learn
It is not at all densely urban, which S17 liked relative to Boston. Downtown Cleveland is still 10 minutes drive/ride away. It is urban though so streets and cars run through the campus and normal cautions, not walking around alone late, etc are necessary (that is true anywhere.) Past newly developed Updown area toward east, it is definetely suburban. So only the campus westside is on the edge of urban area. I loved University circle area with Cleveland orchestra concerts, Art museum, botanical garden, and natural history museum. They are right in the middle of campus with lots of green area.

I haven’t visited Macalster nor Washu. I would imagine Case more urban than they are but not by much.

ETA: Yes, the environment is similar to Pitt.
The train is quite convenient to the airport. I am not sure if it goes underground. I cannot remember :))
There are hils towards south side, Greek houses.
I used to have lunch at the Children’s hospital cafeteria as it was almost right next to my office.
Case would be a great place to do BS/MD as well as biomedical research.

To me when we visited Case it had more of a suburban feel rather than an urban feel like Penn, BU, Columbia, Fordham-LC, etc. Somewhat like Pitt but a bit further from the center.

@itsgettingreal17, take it from someone who lives in a city where we’re driving on packed snow, not just slippery asphalt, four months of the year (well, except for last winter, but that was a weird anomaly, most likely): You do not need four-wheel drive to survive the roads in wintertime. Much more important to have good tires—Blizzaks (it’s a Bridgestone mark) are the ones those of us here who are on the non-studded side of the tire divide swear by.

Ditto. We lived in snow country without 4WD for almost 20 years. We had both Blizzaks and studded tires.
You just have to know how to drive in snow. SLOW!
I have seen many SUVs swerve and end up in ditch.

^True. People tend to think they’re invincible in a big 'ole SUV.

Question…what is this? My S just got an invitation to this…The National Society of High School Scholars. It said in the email/letter that they got his information from CB. Should we give them the $60 or no?

@Tgirlfriend This was brought up 100s of pages ago, I believe. Search NSHSS. As I recall, it was pretty much considered junk mail.

My D just got the same email from NSHSS. I plan to delete the email and not sending in the $60.
It reminds me of Who’s Who.

▲ scammy Mc scammerson scam scam scam.

@hadmeathello @4beardolls @MotherOfDragons …I was wondering if was a scam or not. Thank you for saving me $60. lol

@VickiSoCal @youcee THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I knew someone here would be able to help! Appreciate it so much! I haven’t asked him about Honors there but I will. Thank you again!

Regarding Case (which I attended many moons ago, but now pass through on my commute to work), I feel sits in what is increasingly becoming the gem of the city, being in the midst of Cleveland’s cultural hub, University Circle. I agree with what others have said, but would add that the ability to walk to Little Italy for pizza, pasta, gelato, and baked goods is a wonderful added plus.
S17 just had an interview there and is applying to their BS/MD program also.

@socalmom007, S is applying to Cal Poly also, but for us it will be the most expensive choice!

Put S into one of those high stat boxes but looking at good, solid, but not elite schools, mainly because we will end up full pay, but also by his choice. The scholarships for national merit from some schools like OU and ASU (to name only a couple) are helping to form his choices. Sometime I get frustrated that he isn’t at least applying to one top 20 school, but then I realize that he isn’t the type of kid who wants that kind of environment. Good, solid college, here he come!

We attended a USCarolina scholar dinner and had a very good experience. In addition to the food being quite good, the presenters really did a nice job touting the school and city as well as giving a lot of information specific to the honors college and the scholars program. The USC honors college is small and offers a lot of its own classes. The top scholarships are very financially attractive obviously, but the scholars program also offers a lot of additional amenities in the form of mentors and other support. My DS thought it was hysterical that they have a facility named after Strom Thurmond and that their mascot is a GameCock (or Cockie as they referred to him), but he will now be applying to the school and honors program.

I remember our discussion from earlier about NSHSS and had to laugh because a couple of days later I saw a bumper sticker “My kid is a NSHSS Scholar”. Someone gave them the $60. :))
