Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@mtrosemom if our daughter gets merit aide it will only be enough to bring her private schools down to UC range, cal poly would be so inexpensive in comparison! If she goes there and our son gets some athletic scholarship from northern Arizona we may be able to eat more than ramen next year

@mtrosemom our D did get a small OOS scholarship at Cal Poly, it’s not much but every little bit helps.

@socalmom007 you really don’t need a car at Cal Poly, at least our D has managed fine without. Everything is really close! Relatively speaking of course, the campus itself is spread out to be sure.

Yup, got the same SPAM from NSHSS.
The animation was cute though. :))

D did as well. I saw a bumper sticker recently and chuckled. :))

We often see those silly bumper stickers around here. I feel bad for those folks (but do get a nice chuckle out of it as well.)

So T minus 1 on the NMSF school filing deadline of the 12th. Has anyone seen that their online account shows school’s portion has been submitted?

I suppose it depends, but if we want her to have a job she’d need a car- both downtown and the mall are fairly far from campus. Cal poly would put her within driving distance from home too, as opposed to a flight, so I’m assuming she’d make the trek every few months. We Californians can’t envision functioning without a car

@eandesmom, that’s great to know about Cal Poly! I think it would be the best fit school for S.

We also got the NSHSS email today. It’s in the e-trash.

@DMB301, I just checked and S’s portal shows that the school submitted the student portion today. <:-P I know it was recently because I checked at lunch and they had not yet submitted.

Re: bumper stickers, I’m going to get one of those stickers

next fall. :))

How about “I get my advice from college confidential” bumper sticker

Has @2muchquan ever resurfaced? So strange after being soooo active & soooo funny!

@mtrosemom we had always thought it was from her college as a lot of them are major/college specific but she has said it’s specifically an OOS one and she knows other kids that were awarded it. 2K helps  If nothing else it covers books. For OOS it’s an amazing deal. Not as good as going in state of course but on the “more” affordable side and definitely worth the price difference.

@socalmom007 there is great transportation to downtown, I am a bit less sure of the mall. Parking on campus is a bit of a pain, our D generally walks from her off campus house (and from her off campus apartment before that). A lot of the kids have cars, a lot don’t. She’s been given money for a bike and hasn’t bothered to buy one yet. LOL!

@socalmom007 If you take a car to Cal Poly (or any of the CA publics basically) be prepared for really high parking fees. I seem to recall hearing $300+ per quarter. Amtrak has a station on or near the campus, so that can be used if you live near an Amtrak station. Amtrak has worked out great at breaks going up and down the coast for our son. It’s not something a lot of us use or think about in SoCal, but for UCSB and Cal Poly it works well.

Essay progress!!!

I am eternally grateful that AP Lit dedicated homecoming week to essays! S knocked out 2 of his supplements at school today. One he feels is pretty final, did some peer review and will have his teacher look at, the other rough but a good start. He will have one more full class period to work on these so should be able to make further progress.

He said it was pretty interesting to see what kids chose to do with their time. Most worked on personal statements but some really just goofed around, he was extremely pleased with what he got done and said he felt a bit less pressured as a result.

Unfortunately he didn’t get feedback on his CA essay, he did submit it (in it’s hopefully final form) but the teacher didn’t get to him today.

Super annoyed though, he did have a full meeting with his GC last week, he hasn’t told me boo about how it went and just informed me that it was already completed. Ugh. Hopefully I can get some details out of him tonight.

@socalmom007 I would echo @youcee. D’s roommates walk to class unless they have soccer first, and then have to pay to park for practice. They often then drive back home and still walk to class. D takes the train to San Jose (where we have family ) and flies home from there unless someone drives down from there to get her. The train is amazingly easy, she actually took it all the way to Seattle this summer lol!

@DMV301 - My D’s school’s hasn’t done their part of the NMF app. I am just about hyperventilating, thinking of the potential loss if they don’t follow through. My D has asked me not to intervene; she said she would check up on it. If it not there by 8am tomorrow, though, I will be ALL OVER IT.

@Mommertons I would be beside myself, hang in there! We’re just waiting on LORs, GC letter, school report, and GC feedback on supplements. No problem!

It would never have occurred to me to send a kid to college in So Cal without a car, we drive everywhere here. I went to SDSU, worked retail at two malls 15-20 minutes away, etc… plus drove home every month or two. Will give it some thought. Train has never occurred to me, did we have those Amtrak lines in the early 90’s??? I will investigate! If she goes east coast she won’t take her car.

@socalmom007
Uber?

Having a car certainly makes it easier to travel between home and college, but Uber keeps the students safer, in the event of drinking. I wonder how the combination of increased insurance premiums and on-campus parking fees would compare to Uber & mass transit costs.

Having said that, I am grateful when my son is able to accept a ride home with a friend instead of taking the bus.

@Mommertons – I would be hyperventilating along with you, especially since our school is closed tomorrow. I would be calling the GC first thing in the morning! Fortunately son’s GC must have submitted at some point today as it is marked complete in son’s account.

Yes to the spam email from whatever that sham organization is.

I hear you @socalmom007 we drive everywhere here too. I had a car and drove to work and home (which was 15 min from campus) for holidays. But S17 doesn’t have a car and manages just fine, he just found jobs that worked without having a car and I get to save on the cost of the car as well as insurance. S11 on the other hand did have a car so it really depends on the kid and the school and their work needs. We do not plan for S17 to have a car, at least not the first year. Then again I don’t really want him working freshman year during the school year if it can be avoided. I took Amtrak from Oakland to San Jose this summer (work trip, then met up with H and we drove to SLO) and it really was a great way to travel.

I’ll check it out @eandesmom ! Times have changed a bit I think. I’m expecting my kids to work, I worked retail 20-30 hours a week all through college, my husband delivered pizzas… so, not having a car in So Cal never occurred to me. New York or PA my daughter wouldn’t have a car. My son will take his car to NAU.
