Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Just got back from an interview with the AO for Lafayette College. My D was not wanting to go and we were running late due to traffic and a last minute change of venue this afternoon. This school is the farthest away on our list and the one we know least about. Really no one we know IRL has even heard of it. D was feeling very stressed and negative on the 40 min ride there. So I wasn’t expecting much…

However it was really really good. My D came out enthusiastic about the school and the person who she talked to. She brought her resume and transcript and this time offered them to the interviewer and she referred to them and kept a copy of the resume. I waited in the car, however after, the AO walked D to the car and introduced herself to me and offered me the opportunity to ask her anything as well. This was a little thing that really impressed me.

So this was a good end to a stressful day fighting with her essays. The school is back on her to apply list and the Why Lafayette short answer doesn’t look so daunting to her now.

Skype interview for Wake Forest and then UofRichmond interview Friday and then she wil be done with interviews!!

@stlarenas – older son interviewed at Laf & Lehigh. Both followed same format of suggesting that parents return after 25 minutes or so and then join interviewer and applicant in the room. I never had a question; I am not quite sure what they expected.

I REALLY liked Laf. Son was a bit less excited about it, but that was primarily due to the personality of the tour guide. Very friendly students on campus—unsolicited greetings or comments (son wore swim team jacket on tours). I think it is a beautiful campus.

PLMK if you want Naviance stats. We have one or two attend each year. I know of two different boys who were offered the Marquis, but turned it down to go elsewhere.

Good luck with the Wake one. Have heard those can be a bit more rigorous.

@Mommertons @DMV301 Schools are closed here all week on the coast of Georgia due to hurricane. School has not submitted and probably wont until next week when they reopen. I will call NMC tomorrow to find out what we should do if anything. I assume they will be flexible due to circumstances. Seems that I read somewhere they are flexible wth the school part.

@mamaedefamilia @youcee @greeny8 @Mom2aphysicsgeek @hadmeathello @carachel2 @stlarenas

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and perspective. It is so hard to keep a level head on CC.

We do have a balanced list that includes a safety she could be really excited about after getting over rejection. She also has an acceptance at Pitt which is a backup to the backup. I honestly believe she will do great, and may have a little more fun, at either of these schools.

D17 has a unique scholarship from my employer that make most of her choices already affordable which has allowed her to get her hopes too high. She knows she has a full ride to her ED school, IF she can get in. I know, first-world-problem!

I just looked at her list this morning, noticed her ED and 2 reachy EA results will come out about the same week and imagined the impact of 3 rejections in a row. The possibility hurts my heart but we will get through it.

I keep reminding her that rejections at these schools are the norm and acceptances are the exception. I think it is just really hard to accept that reality when we are slogging through these excessive essays and application checklists!

File under amusing or pathetic…

Was scheduling a follow-up Dr appt this afternoon. Receptionist offered March 14th and son responded that was MIT Notification Day. I didn’t say anything, but my first thought was ‘not unless you write those essays’!!!

@stlarenas I agree with @CT1417 re the Wake interview. My older child had an on-campus one a few years back, and it was the most textbook-college-interview she had all season (why wake? what books? strengths/weaknesses? where in 5-10 years?). Not crazy questions, but just boring. Like someone reading from a prepared list instead of actually listening to the students and trying to learn real things about them. My kid loved the school but that was a downer.
Good luck and stay strong!

@CA1543 Yeah, whatever happened to 2much? I heard he may have joined the FB group. :wink:

Hi fellow 2017 parents. New here. My DD plans to go to MSU (Honors, College of Engineering for CS and Mech Eng minor) in Bozeman. We visited last summer, and she fell in love with it. It seems to be a good fit for her. She has been accepted, but we are still working on the finances. We are in No. CA so OOS tuition and will likely not qualify for any need based aid. She will get the 15k achievement award and hopefully some others. I may also have her apply at UA as a backup since she would qualify for their free tuition award. She definitely wants out of CA (so no UC’s) and loves cold weather. I look forward to following along here.

JOTD: I once got offered a job at a pin factory. I turned down the offer, though—just didn’t see the point.

@NoelleCf isn’t Montana state on WUE? That should be much cheaper than oos tuition.

@dfbdfb How old are you!?!?!?! =))

@DMV301 @Mommertons Status on NMSF app still the same. Says school has not submitted their portion of the app. @mommertons At this point, intervening is fair game. I asked S17 if he heard anything from the college counselor. He said he has seen her but she didn’t indicate any issues. I checked again tonight and, while I was trying to be patient because there are some families that are in a bad situation, I thought it would be done by today. S17 completed his portion almost two weeks ago so I’m not comfortable cutting it so close. I am on the same 8am track as you.

@socalmom007 Yes, they have a limited number of WUE scholarships for high stat students. She did the app for that, but her ACT (34) and GPA (3.97 uw) qualify her for the higher achievement scholarship of 15k. Unfortunately, they won’t stack them or she would have most of the cost of a full ride covered.

SO happy to become a member of the Submitted Apps Club!!! :O) S sent Purdue & UMass (flagship) out tonight. Purdue is rolling admissions so hopefully we’ll hear back soon. I feel like his chances at Purdue would be excellent for any other major besides Mechanical Engineering (so competitive). It could go either way.

@caroldanvers thank you for the UMD CP visit description. S is also applying to engineering but we won’t visit unless he gets in. I was worried about the size so it’s nice to hear that it seemed manageable. The emphasis on weighted GPA was discouraging - son’s HS school doesn’t weight or rank. Did AO mention whether they recalculate GPAs?

Anyone else going to Lafayette’s Engineering Open House on Friday? We are doing a quick trip to revisit Lehigh & Lafayette while school is in session to get a better feel for both schools. S absolutely loved Lehigh so it will be good for him to get a second look while we rack up some “demonstrated interest” points.

@BlueAFMom Those moments of panic are tough. Not sure if it helps, but please know that you aren’t alone - I get them, too. It’s going to be hard when things don’t go his way, for sure, but we’ll get through it.

Regarding good used cars, both kids drive our 2005 Subaru Legacy and they absolutely love it. It is great in snowy weather. I think it has around 178k miles.

For all of you with NMSF and are seeing that the school has not submitted their part—I would need to be medicated!

That’s a bummer @NoelleCf ! I worried about that with my son, but thankfully his school doesn’t limit WUE’s.

No NMSF submittal by the school yet, but there are 40+ kids this year and around that every year, so I’m pretty sure it will get taken care of.

@Biotechgirl Under the circumstances where our states have been under state of emergency I am sure they will be flexible. Worth the call just to get it on record that your child’s school is closed. Good thoughts to you and your community.

@carachel2 :)) I think we are all trying to be optimistic that by morning this is finalized. You made me laugh though and I needed it so thanks.

@paveyourpath …Well I’m glad I made you laugh!

@youcee …with 40 NMSF I’m sure they have it down to a science! Our school only has a few each year so it would make me super nervous!
