Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@dfbdfb I can’t offer any advice to you on ethics.
I basically offered my son a cash reward for finishing early.

@thermom – our counselor’s advice was to send all subject tests 750 and over. We also sent a 740 in a subject DC will not major in as it was after 9th grade (and just the first year of that subject). Yeah, the percentage might not have been great, but that compares to many kids who had completed two years of the subject, including AP level.

@dfbdfb D took one yesterday.

@dfbdfb @itsgettingreal17 My D also took a mental health day yesterday. End of first quarter is Friday, Homecoming is Saturday, and she just needed a day to rest and recharge. She has all As thus far, so how could I say no.

@dfbdfb I would use the day to work on those essays if it won’t cause too much stress to make up any missed work. A mental health day is a valid reason for a sick day in my opinion. Mental health should be as important as physical health and if it will ease he stress to finish those essays, it’s worth it.

@dfbdfb …we are fans of hard work here but there does come a day oh say, once or twice a semester when D will decide she can get more done at home than at school. She will go back to bed for an hour or two and then actually wake up and get some things done.

@phoenixmomof2 Similar story for us, without the missed assignment. School makes it hard on kids who miss or are late, even due to very legitimate reasons. However, if you give advance notice and turn in the work before you’re gone, it’s no biggie. But DS is also refusing to miss school to visit colleges.

@dfbdfb I’d bring it up and let her decide. Although I’d probably spend more time on the positives of taking the day – you’ll get more done, I will do less nagging, etc. – than on the reasons to go to school.

OK, DS just texted a pic of a box of swag he got in the mail with an acceptance from U of OK. I’m sorry for everything I said about their lack of good swag on the visit. =)) Of course, I can’t really see what’s all in it in the text. I can’t wait to get home. Still waiting to join the Bama crew.

@dfbdfb If she wants to take a day off to get it done, I would approve!

I like @RightCoaster 's cash reward for finishing early!

I had a hissy fit recently because my D17s safety has a priority deadline of 11/1 and this school requires nothing to apply, no essay - just scores and transcript and application fee and she was dragging her feet. Finally she hit submit yesterday!

Happy Dance!

@dfbdfb I vote for the mental health day, too. My daughter was near tears the other day after getting her second B on an MV test. She’s freaking out that she may get a B in the class. Time for a mental health day for her, too, methinks!

Hey, we just received an invite to a “Special Reception” for Bama in early November. It’s in our area. Anyone know anything about these? It doesn’t give a lot of info beyond place and time.

Finallly, finally finished the common app essay and satisfied. Whew! Ready to submit 3 applications - need to submit 1 at least by Oct. 15.

School report not yet uploaded to Common App but should be soon, 2 LoRs uploaded & 2 to go - some schools acept a few. Lots more college supps to work on but enough done that he can start to rework some of them for other schools. Waiting on that Physics SAT score and its good – need it for a few schools. Know others are waiting on a score here or there too.

@hadmeathello – My DS interviewed at Case during a visit & it was pretty low key. Might ask about senior year courses & what is your least favorite class now or in past & why - he got something like that.

@hadmeathello …the Bama reception was fun! Ours was held at a really cool venue in a suite at a huge motor speedway. Good food and lots of rah rah school talk. We attended mainly so I could show D Bama was a good school with lots of interested students and it did not disappoint. The only downside is that it was a bit of a rah rah football talk so eh, that part wasn’t her favorite. They have a current student and a current parent also do a small talk and that was really well done.

I’m glad we had the first B freakout freshman year. Got it all over at once.

CB score sends CB sends scores in batches. If your score sends only took 2 days and someone else’s took 10, it is bc of when you paid for them in the time between batch sends. Fulfillment of score sends is strictly due to CB sending them and has nothing to do with the universities. It might take a university 2 weeks to process the batch of sends. You want to have them fulfilled prior to due dates.

Here is CB delivery dates:

@dfbdfb But if she gets into her dream school will it be because she cheated the system and took that extra day ;))

Just kidding of course. My D took a mental health day yesterday but the school was closed for Yom Kippur. She should have worked on essays but her and her friends decided they want to learn Old English and started studying that. She’s had it a bit easy with breaks so far. School didn’t start until after labor day which helped for the ACT. She had a 5 day weekend wrapped around the SAT 2 date. She got almost 2 week break with her University classes due to holidays and a sick teacher one night, The teachers seem to not assign anything on days off so the kids can work on college apps.

D’s English teacher, who wrote her a beautiful LoR, says she’ll be done making comments/edits/whatever she’s doing with D’s essay by this weekend. Please, please, please let her finish in time. Once the main essay is done she can submit to three of the four unsubmitted schools by the 11/1 EA deadline.

Here’s a strange thing: The one school she has submitted to is Western Washington U. Upon submitting and paying, there was a note saying a portal would be set up within two weeks. Two weeks! I don’t understand why they wouldn’t set up a portal immediately. In fact, they didn’t even send an email acknowledging her submission. It seems very strange. Any similar experiences?

@dfbdfb, I’d do the mental health day unless your D is adamantly opposed. D17 HATES missing school (or really anything she is supposed to be at), so if she needed this, I’d suggest it to her pretty gently and see what she thinks. S18 otoh, probably takes about one mental health day per semester. He’s a great student, but once in a while he’ll slip and get overwhelmed. The times he’s stayed home he has indeed spent the day poring over his schoolwork. I guess it could be argued that I’m sheltering him from “the real world.” But it’s tough to see my kid buried under stress when I know he’s a hard worker 99% of the time.

@MotherOfDragons – I felt so happy for you getting that nice compliment for your DD!! Hope her appreciation permeates all of our homes and our kids start to show a bit more love for all we are doing!

@snoozn no clue. I can tell you WWU emailed us to tell us they’d received his scores but when he went to set up his applicaiton it didn’t find him as a previous student which seemed odd to me since he took the class their this summer. I emailed the AO and he responded right away that it would all sync up on their end after he submitted.

We haven’t submitted the app yet and after today…it will NOT be this weekend. The English teacher didn’t like the essay nearly as much as the paid editor so we are not done. Super bummed.

GRRR.

oops – @MotherOfDragons – I meant the nice compliment “from” your DD of course!!

@eandesmom Oh, I know how it feels to have your S’s English teacher pan his essay! My D’s teacher did the same thing, and it set us back a week or 10 days. She ended up picking another prompt. Honestly, the English teacher is probably looking for different things than an AO would, I think. That’s tough. Sorry about that. In our case, the essay was being graded, so D felt she HAD to change it. In the end, it turned out for the better, but not sure you need the added pressure right now. :-q
