@hadmeathello ours was being graded as well, although I don’t know that anything beyond the rough draft is being graded. Unfortunately both S and I did not think it was a rough draft and this weekend is homecoming so…I am thinking it’s a 2 week setback. He is at work right now, not sure what the next steps are for class and if they will be reviewing them further or not. He could have chosen not to submit it and submit a supplemental instead but wanted another set of eyes on it.
I agree that they are likely looking at different things, the question is, do I provide that feedback to the editor or not? UGH.
Well, the OU box looked bigger and better in the text than IRL (insert your own joke here). The engineering school included a card about recommended reading! But it was still a good day.
@eandesmom Ugh is right. For good or ill, S didn’t have anyone review his essays other than me to catch typos. He didn’t take much of my feedback beyond that. Here’s hoping you get back on track after Homecoming.
@eandesmom and @hadmeathello I have read the occasional thread here on CC about English teachers who were NOT helpful so I think it’s always good to mull over advice before making changes. Not an option, of course, when the revisions are required for a grade.
Two of our GCs have prior experience working in admissions at respectable LACs. So far, their advice about essays seems to be spot on. We are very fortunate.
Progress today: one honors program application (Western Washington) and applications to College of Wooster and St Olaf. Seven down, two to go. And then the scholarship essays, sigh.
How are your DC’17s all doing so far senior year grades wise? After a month into senior year, D’17 is looking at one solid B right now in one of her classes. Hope she still has time to catch up by the end of first marking period.
@carachel2 An acceptance letter, a congratulations card, a couple OU postcards “for now and after you get on campus,” a little felt pennant, the recommended reading note, and a little punch out catapult kit. And some crinkly paper confetti <:-P
Seems like an expensive way to mail a few sheets of paper.
@IABooks … The pics made it seem like a lot more. It looked really nice.
A FB friend posted her kid’s UA acceptance and someone made a kind of snarky comment that it wasn’t a very fancy acceptance package. The mom and I are friends so I know he qualifies for the Presidential and I just couldn’t resist adding “that’s ok, the $107,00 full tuition scholarship package makes up for the lack of fancy acceptance package.”
Add me to those stressed by waiting for recommendations. D needs it tomorrow. She talked, in person, with the recommender yesterday.
We are out of chocolate. I’ve already walked 2 miles to the gym, lifted heavy, and walked home. I am not drinking alcohol until later this month (Food & Wine at Epcot for our anniversary!)
@RightCoaster@STEM2017 Frustrating that GC are expressing that they have until the deadline to get the documentation in. If I were a GC I’d be appreciative of those that got things in early so I can get some through before the big rush. There must be something to the process that I don’t understand. I can’t imagine how large schools manage to get everything done without getting on top of things early.
@hadmeathello I’m not sure which schools are falling off the list. I think S17 is waiting for the fatigue factor to set in.
@MotherOfDragons Warms the heart. The kids at least realize how much more painful their lives would be without the schedule and spreadsheets. The lack of stress is paying off because the grades on his mid-year report are going to be outstanding.
@CT1417@itsgettingreal17 I’m a little freaked out here! I logged into Naviance and can see that both LOR have been submitted. Where do I look to see which LOR is going to which school. There are two on the list that request 1 but I can’t tell which 1 would be sent. Is the manner in which they are listed in Naviance any clue?
Teacher 1 listed first is the LOR that needs to get to every school. Teacher 2 is the one that will go to all schools accepting more than 1 LOR.
Teacher 2 got her LOR in first so I know it is not listing in order uploaded.
Log into CA, go to My Colleges, go to the school in question, then under Recommenders & FERPA…scroll down and you will see the name (and subject) of the teacher who submitted the LOR for that school.
Looking in Naviance, I can only see that son requested that the other teacher submit the LOR.
@itsgettingreal17 I’m only sharing here. LOL. As far as friends and family know, we still have visits to make, applications to finish. The holidays will be a lot of shrugging, nodding and smiling.
Add me to the list of those waiting for stuff from GCs. Bama emailed that they still don’t have the info S asked them to send 2 weeks ago that Bama needs to process his app. :-w
QOTD: We’re laying low with info as well. If there’s a full conversation about the topic, I am happy saying The Honors College at University of Alabama or The Provost Scholars Program at University of Mississippi…very happy.
@dfbdfb Mental health day: S17 had one yesterday. It is his lightest day of the week and when I found out one teahcer would be out for a medical procedure on a double block day, I made the suggestion and it was immediately shot down. I made the case for how there would be more unproductive time if he went to school and he told me not to worry he would make the use of his time even during the class with the substitute. I wasn’t convinced because of the distractions associated with hs kids sitting in a class with a sub for 90 minutes. I accepted his decision. Yesterday morning he woke up and said “Good morning, You made some good points, I’m not going to school today.” He put the finishing touches on two essays and wrote an excellent essay on the activity that means the most to him. No ethical concern here because it’s not as if the kid is sitting home watching tv or playing video games. He was working just doing something more productive than he would have experienced at school yesterday. S17 is entitled to 5 or so days to visit schools. He won’t be doing that because we did the visits during school and summer breaks. The days should be permitted for essay writing as well. I’d mention to your D, which I am certain will realize on her own, how conflicted you were but you want to discuss it and see how she feels about it.
@DMV301 is right. It’s a great mental health day for for the parents too.
Wow, I feel like the only mom on here not doing any early action or early decision!!! Am I??? :-S our first apps in are UC and CSU 11/30. We’ll tell close family where she’s accepted, probably won’t share every denial, lol.
