Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I admit it… I too am an over-sharer. :frowning: But, that said, my DS has wanted to go to the same school since he was a kid. So, it’s really no surprise to people when the ask. His list is very short and “obvious”.

There are good progress made in this family. First LOR is submitted and is correctly reflected in Naviance and common app. @CT1417 @CA1543 We are also a GA Tech family

Secondly D won the school nomination for a major scholarship and will be back to essay business :))

We are submitting tonight for GATech - no SAT Physics score for a few weeks. So on Common App it asks for SAT etc. tests taken OR WHICH YOU PLAN TO TAKE. I am reluctant to put Physics down bc no score yet (and would hate to have to send it to GTech if low). GATech doesn’t require any SAT subject tests - so it seems ok to omit listing SAT Physics for now. Anyone else go through this decision??

We spent the day pondering over whether or not to squeeze Ga Tech in tonight/tomorrow but he finally decided against it. He needs to improve his ACT next week and if he does, maybe he’ll try GT for Regular Decision. It’s a looong shot for him either way.

Good luck to the rest of you working with the deadline!

@STEM2017 GT is most definitely not a Big MAC. It ended up netting the highest cost out of all of the schools our ds applied to. Case was significantly cheaper. (Case is much more generous with scholarship $$.)

How many applications: 11 on the list (3 EA, 1 12/1 deadline to be considered for Merit, 7 RD). School schedule is for all seniors to have ALL apps done by Dec 9. I love that schedule.

@STEM2017 Glad to hear the LOR / transcript went out! What a relief! S17 received an email from his college counselor telling him that his one non-Common App App is complete. This was a relief here today.

Senior grades: Fortunately, going extremely well. If they were on his transcript right now, I’d be thrilled. Since they are not, I’m just optimistically encouraged and hoping we can end the trimester with the same grades.

Spring Decision Stress: I think (hope) will be minimal. S17 has told me (and only me) if he gets in his #1 choice, decision is easy; if he gets in to both his #2 and #3 choice and not his #1 choice, he will have a harder time decided between #2 & #3. It’s when I told him to keep an open mind and visit all schools that he is accepted to and decide then. I think once it’s narrowed down for him by acceptances, it’s easier to decide.

@eandesmom Well, the good news is that S is not stressed about the essay so I’m sure that makes you feel better. It sounds like the feedback he got was constructive and just a different perspective and sometimes talking through the ideas with someone a student trusts can have excellent results. Maybe this new essay will be even stronger than the original. I’m with you on wanting them all to be done already but it will all work out.

@hadmeathello Booya is right! You win! Your D has more acceptances than S17 has yet submitted in apps. =))
Good for you though, seriously. I look forward to the day S17 gets his first acceptance.

@IABooks All those grading scales sound like a nightmare. You would think they would have waited on that so as not to have any graduating class have 3 grading scales on a transcript.

@stlarenas Hopefully, the interview went well. Sometimes after waiting around for awhile, it helps calm the nerves. Maybe it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

First B in Transcript?
90 above is A for our public school. D, with 6 APs, has 3 subjects over 100, othere all above 95, except 92 on Physics C which the average of last test was low C. The test today is even worse, based on the fact no one finished in 2 class periods. D has to consider the possibility of B on her senior year transcript. The students of this teacher are known to have 4 or 5s on AP exam. D’s mental health moments are Costco and farmer market trips— we are going to Costco tomorrow during sample hours

@whataboutcollege, if you don’t mind sharing which scholarship?

I’ll be posting both here and FB, but I have a ton of work due Oct. 26 (before EA) and Nov. 9. So, I’m trying to restrict my CC and CC-FB.

Sharing: I’m not an oversharer, but I did tell my sister which apps he’s currently working on for Nov. 1 and that he has a bunch due Jan. 1. She also has a Class of '17er, but says he’s only applying 2 places. He has an acceptance to one of them already. Not really sharing details yet with the other relatives, though they are all on DH’s side.

No FB for me; I’ve boycotted it until after the election. My otherwise normal ‘friends’ are losing their minds over this election. I’ve asked that anyone sharing cute cat pics to message them to me and I’ve gotten a daily dose so I’m not sure I will ever need to go back!

D17 finalized her CA essay and I feel a huge sigh of relief. She had already started her supplemental essays but now it seems like she can really move on.

She’s keeping her grades up…trying to move up in the rankings which is all internal motivation. The top three graduates have to address the 400-member student body and another 1000+ attendees in a huge coliseum. I can’t imagine wanting to do that at 17–terrifying! I might have failed a class to avoid that!

13 applications; 1 rolling complete/accepted; 1 ED/4 EA (3 complete); 2 early scholarship deadlines and rest RD.

I used to speak freely (to the point of being a bore) about the process and then I heard myself say “she’s applying to 13 schools” and realized how ridiculous I sounded…lol! Now I just say she isn’t sure yet.

Thanks to those who weighed in on D17’s subject test quandary. While I hate to think she sat for those @#$% tests for nothing, they were really taken with Georgetown in mind and since that school fell off her list… I guess we’ll just sit on those for the time being. Ugh, testing. At least she’s done!

D has one EA state school, and (suddenly!) an ED reach. One nice thing about Swathmore’s ED is that they allow other private college applications to go forward with the understanding that you will withdraw if admitted and financial aid is worked out. So D is going to charge ahead with her other apps as though she were applying to Swat as just another school and kind of presume she’s not going to get in. If she does, it will be lovely! But she’s definitely not counting on it.

D is keeping her application plans pretty close. She will share with her closest friends who she can count upon not to gossip, but is trying to steer clear of some of the more competitive kids. Mostly, she’s sick to death of everyone talking about college, college, college all the time. She’s come around to the degree that she knows what she needs to do, and she’s trying to look out for herself, but she doesn’t want to talk about it incessantly.

I will talk to family and close friends if they bring it up first. I totally hear those of you who worry about becoming a college info drone lol. I feel like I’ve been marinating in so much information for so long at this point, I don’t trust myself to not yak the ears off the unsuspecting who have just asked a polite question about how D’s search is going.

@thermom I hear you about the subject tests that may be unnecessary. Oh well, quite a few schools ‘will consider’ them, but I am not sure we will end up with any that require them.

Same thing now with ZeeMee. Daughter made a nice page (also no intro video, like mom2a mentioned), but both her schools that specifically asked for it (optional, but a spot in their app for it) have now fallen off her list. Oh well! She’s included the link in the Additional Info sections of non-CA apps.

Since you’re talking about how many apps … Curious whether your kids’ high schools limit how many they are allowed to apply to. Do they say that X many are free and then you have to pay extra for the rest? Or just give you an absolute restriction on the total number?

@Mom2aphysicsgeek

Did your ds get full tuition at Case?

But I’m so way behind on posts just by keeping busy working for the past few days.

@socalmom007 Yup… no apps submitted yet. I’ve posted about this before here.

** EA ** S17 has plans to submit one application before it’s EA 11/1 deadline but I have no idea how? This weekend is so busy… I’m not sure he has time for homework. At least it’s an easy application, doesn’t need any letters

** Missing School ** Not if we can help it. DS missed two days last spring to attend his sisters graduation. But in general it’s really a pain to keep up. And if it isn’t an excused absence teachers don’t have to let them make up work. Of course if I we just called him in sick, there isn’t anything they could do about it.

** How many applications: ** Five – Applying to 5 schools but it requires 5 different app.

** Grades ** I hadn’t looked at them in a week and a half and in general they look good. Better than the past few years. AP Physics is a bit low, seems someone hasn’t been turning in all the homework. But English is doing great, which is my biggest worry. And he’s doing really really well in AP CS so far!!!

@Ynotgo I know what you mean about no time. It’s 11:00 on a Friday night & I really should be at my laptop working rather than catching up here. Except I really can’t sleep if I work on work too late.

After reading these posts I decided to try the FB group. (Not on it yet.) I keep up with FB more… it’s keeps me in touch with out of town friends & family. Have a love hate relationship with FB.

Too late just noticed mistakes in my post above. S17 is applying to 8 schools…

Good Luck to all those applying at CASE. A bit sad S17 wouldn’t even look at it. He won’t look at anything that urban or that far east. (It’s a couple thousand miles east of the Rockies.)

@nw2this No. case offers a handful of competitive scholarships which he did not receive. They do offer pretty standard scholarships which seem formula based, but unpublished. If you read through their acceptance threads, you’ll see a pattern which seems to align with test scores and GPA. There is probably more to it than that. Anyway, my memories are foggy, but I think the range I remember seeing was something like $15,000-30,000.

For us, one of the issues with Case, too, was that the scholarship was a fixed amt. We have learned to pay attention to whether or not scholarships adjust with tuition/fee increases or if schools have fixed rates based on entering yr. With schools costing as much as they do, 3-5% increases/yr can add up.
