@IABooks My son’s HS also changed their grading scale last year. But they made it retroactive for the entire four years and recalculated the entire GPA. I think that this is why he had to wait so long this fall for his transcript.
@DMV301 D’s HS does not limit the number of applications she can send. We use Naviance, and I think after 1, it is not a ton more work for others. They charge $5 per transcript after your 3rd (unless is for a scholarship). They certainly don’t promote applying to 15-20, but our GC has not said anything negatively about my D applying to ~20 (that’s how many she’s moved to Schools I’m Applying To, but in the end it will be closer to 12-15).
JOTD:
@dfbdfb, you should steal this too
Car shopping over. D chose a 2017 Kia Forte. D got a kick out of my negotiating tactics. But we got a good deal and she’s happy.
@curiositycat333 Thanks for your late-night post. I got about 90 minutes of solid work in after reading that. I-)
We went to a local production of Macbeth last night. Innovative staging. I’m not sure which Shakespeare plays DS will read this year in AP Lit, but Macbeth is a good one.
Hoping significant work on college apps gets done today for everyone who is working on those. :!!
Our UC’s Winter Quarter schedule came out, but DS does’t want to look at it to figure out what classes he will take. Those classes start after all his apps are due. Strange to think that a time when he’ll be past that stage is coming…
@Ynotgo hopefully you didn’t utter that name inside the theater.
Trying to keep mom from texting D every hour while she is a away for the weekend for the first time. I’m not sure what she’s so worried about. I’ve had a great time this weekend so far. Got to go to that hole-in-the-wall taco joint and found Gold Cup Topsiders 50% off on the way back home.
Looks like I am a late entry into the college spreadsheet crew. S finally agreed that it would be good for him to know when things (like regular applications and honors college apps) are due so he knows how much time he has. Oy.
@thermom I looked back twenty pages or so to find your post on SAT Subject Tests. I would send them. Conventional wisdom here is that anything over 700 is worth sending and 750+ is Ivy worthy. My D took 3 subject tests and guess what? None of her schools require them! But some will consider them and her top two scores were 750+ so we paid to send them.
Thanks for your review on Swarthmore. Just got on the radar because of the very clever view book we got in the mail. If D decides to add a reachy school, just for grins, this could well be it. It checks a lot of her boxes. She also loved Vassar but ended up not applying.
Number of schools: D’s school strongly recommends 6-8, plus one public instate safety. It doesn’t forbid going higher but doesn’t encourage it either. D is at 8 + state flagship. Three are EA with Nov. 1 deadlines and she has one outstanding - the supplemental essay still requires a bit more tinkering.
counselor recommendations on number of schools :)) =)) :))
Application #16 has been submitted!
Only a handful of scholarship apps to go, most of which have been started.
@thermom D only needed SAT II for 2 schools, but she did well on the 2 she took so we sent them. I’d recommend sending any score 700+.
Holy crapola! 16. ^:)^
@itsgettingreal17, 16???
This is as of now for us:
Application #1 has been submitted!
A lot of apps to go, most of which have been kind of started.
Us too @HiToWaMom. I am hoping for another one soon???
I have been attempting to follow along with this fast moving thread but have probably missed a lot. All of your kids are so much more focused than my D who has spent the weekend doing Spirit Week activities and attending a musical and is planning to spend most of tomorrow campaigning.
Luckily, we do have one safety in hand, but I have no idea when she plans to do the rest of her EA apps!
Some progress was made this week. S now has 5 apps in, with two admits. Still struggling with his ED supplement and I don’t think it is good enough for a highly selective school. Can’t figure out the Why this school essay. I think it is too generic. Beside finishing this app, he hopes to submit 3 more EA apps in next two weeks. I don’t see it happening. Then he will work on RD, back up ED2, and maybe scholarships if he has time. My concern is he has the grades, test scores, and EC’s to be competitive at many of his schools, but his essays will not elevate or separate him from a very competitive pack. He goes down to the wire on everything, and it is difficult to contain my concern/contempt/anxiety. Oh well, it is my problem…
Don’t think FB is for me…this takes enough time. Don’t need more.
I tell everyone about Bama, and they think I am crazy. Even my wife. I think it is the best deal going. I will lose that battle…
My son also want business. He is applying to many highly rated business schools. Some Privates, but Many are big State schools. Preadmit or Direct admit is a big consideration. Would love for him to get into Michigan, Texas, or UNC direct admit, all really hard for OOS kids. IU Kelly will be his safety. Somehow, I doubt this story will end till April…6 more months of uncertainty…Happy to have all you to share this with
What is the name of the FB group?
For those who did Fassa and CSS, Question. I know you have to report your current accounts as of the date you submit the apps. Do they ask for statements to be submitted? Do you have to print out from online or mailed statements and submit. Is it the honor system. What stuff do I need to gather before sitting down to do. any suggestions? I am moving some money out of accounts this week, so timing when I file is legit. Just wondering how to substantiate or if needed. I need help. Thanks
They don’t ask for print outs, but I think it is possible to be selected for verification/audit so not exactly the honor system either.
Correction: Some schools might request print-outs. The ones with yes for IDOC on this website:

DS only submitted 2 apps so far. 2 more are ready but a huge EA on for Nov. 1 is not close.
We are not filling out FAFSA or CSS – bc we think no aid it possible. Hope not needed for (non-need based) merit consideration though.
