Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Egad! Remember that Yale book? Just received the Stanford “tome” in the mail. 80+, think glossy pages on a school that DS17 has about a 2% chance being accepted…

@CaucAsianDad I can guess which school that is…the only e-mail we’ve received is a request for the $25 housing deposit…

@Gator88NE Ours was basically “Hurry up and finish your app, the deadline is near!” She just can’t quite get that essay down to 2500 characters yet.

D posted a picture of the Yale book on her Snap chat story, she got plenty of #Thirsty and #Looking4AppFee type responses. I do not think Yale got a good ROI on the book sent to our house.

@payn4ward are you saying that people used to write in his yearbook that he needed a speech therapist?

Somebody would have been needing a proctologist who specializes in removal of yearbooks if that had happened to us-that’s some chutzpah from whoever did that.

D17 recently lost her 13 year old cat to cancer. I asked her if she’d be looking at pet friendly dorms, and she thought about it for a while and then said that she didn’t want the responsibility of caring for another cat at school, and if she were around cats all the time she’d just miss her own cat (who was, I believe, the best cat who ever lived, and I’m not a huge cat person.)

Good to know I wasn’t losing my mind when I put the test date thingy on the google calendar. 8-}

What about “unsubscribe” does Cornell not understand?!

Best email yet from a college (sarcasm): “please register to confirm your information and be entered to receive a fee waiver.” :))

:)) :)) @MotherOfDragons Yes, it was politely phrased though that they know someone who can help out. We promptly ignored. That is why you’re MoD and I am a Casper.

QOTD - My S17 is probably a slight extrovert. He needs some time with people and we used to have trouble shutting him up at times. He does spend time in his room every day, but I think that is primarily to focus better on his school work. My D19, on the other hand, is an introvert. She’s not shy except in new social situations or when having to ask for special assistance from a teacher or other authority figure. She enjoys her friends, although she chooses them carefully and doesn’t use the word friend lightly. But she really needs her alone time and treasures her privacy. She’s handled camp situations with a whole bunk of kids just fine, but I’m not sure how she will fare in college with a roommate 24/7 for an expended duration and with the stress of school work. . .

Interesting naviance development today.

I had been told that our school would not send transcripts, transcript supplement or the GC form/letter/recommendation whatever you really want to call it, until the student moved schools into the “applied” category.

Quite surprised then to see today that transcript and GC initial materials all show as sent and the CA reflect that. Upon checking…I can see that his data point now exists as applied for all of his schools so it would appear that there are two triggers for the scattergram and data updates? He’s not on the scattergram yet and won’t be until decisions come in but it was a bit of a surprise to log in and see applicants at his schools…and then realize it really was just still him.

LOL!

@Gator88NE So you’re telling me there’s a chance. YEAH!

Continuing with the movie quotes: Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

Was going to suggest to D to drop WashU due to the low number of merit scholarships and having to apply separately for them but they just sent her a notice that she qualifies for a travel grant and they’ll fly her out to visit.

You described my D to a T.

Yikes that’s scary @STEM2017 good thing you called.

@greeny8, @hadmeathello, @itsgettingreal17 - My DD15 sounds like yours. She is a bit quiet at first (some might say aloof). But as soon as she’s comfortable, look out! It was tough when she was going through rush because she had to let herself loose a little sooner than she’s used to.

My DS17 is probably a 5 on a 0-10 scale. He is a chatty kid, but really LOVES his time alone. I hardly ever has friends over and prefers to play music in his room. But he’s got a warm smile and will chat you up all afternoon if you give him an inch.

Really embarrassed to ask, but what does CASPR mean? Something to do with Common App?

@MotherOfDragons - I’m so sorry for your D’s and your loss. My D17 just got a cat about six months ago, her first pet. I didn’t even realize there were pet friendly dorms. My D will miss her cat a lot. Then again, that might be the only draw to get her back home on visits.

@STEM2017 I’m not sure if you are asking about CASPer… but in case you are…
MotherOfDragons breathes fire on her kids and others, but moi, Casper mom (as in the ghost movie Casper) breathes splash of mist and what I do and what I say have little impact on real people, my kids. :((

I also coined CASPer - College Apathy Slacker Parent - as my child has been pretty unmotivated regarding college stuff. [-(
We had Wednesday off, today half day and Friday off. Not sure if any apps will go out this weekend. ~X( :-w

@payn4ward - love it, CASPer, lol. I’ve been saying lately I want to hire an agent to deal with all things college. I resign! (I wish).

@payn4ward Hilarious. I’ve seen it mentioned dozens of times but had no idea. Pretty much sums up our situation.

OK, tomorrow is the big math test for D. Her whole HS career hinges on this 45 minutes. If she doesn’t ace it, she is nothing. Zero. Zilch. She will have to go to CC (not that there’s anything wrong with it).

Not.

Actually, she’s much better tonight. Studying and watching the Cubs. I have not even mentioned college essays in a few days. We have 2-3 more EAs to get done, and we’ll be going to IU next weekend, so this weekend is going to be it for EAs. Crunch time! Oh, yeah, we are going to the USCar Top Scholars dinner on Sunday. Yum!

Q: What kind of exercise do lazy
people do?
A: Diddly-squats.

I hear you on the this is the most important thing ever and all is riding on it over the top stress. Sheesh.

@hadmeathello Good luck to your D on the math test! D has her Calc III midterm on Saturday. I found a good tutor to help her review as its an online class and I don’t think D even knows whether the prof is a man or woman (not kidding). :))

D is still in shutdown mode. She swears she’s going to get everything done this weekend. She is so close to being done, but is procrastinating. Next deadline is Nov. 2. sigh

Thanks! Oh, and it’s senior night tomorrow for the marching band. I get to go out on the field with D at half-time. That’s what’s making me nervous. I am an introvert. 8-X X_X
