Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I didn’t clarify much either as posting from the phone means typos lol! Grade 110 lol.

Our school does not send out quarter grades in transcript form, only a mid year transcript. There is a progress report at the quarter that is mailed home but I’ve no idea how that could be sent to the colleges. I figured I’d deal with it if any ask but am hoping mid year is sufficient.

@payn4ward – Hmmmm…I will need to go search all those features you mentioned. I have three of us using only four GB of data, and now that the phones are two years old and ‘off contract’, the monthly phone fee drops to $20/phone, but I am still looking at $120/month all in. Much better than it used to be when phones were all under contract.

WiFi doesn’t seem to work in our HS and the phones can hardly catch a signal (planned by administration??). I walk to a window when I am there volunteering, so not much data used during school. College son’s data use drops when he returns to campus b/c of the widely available WiFi.

Is he not tempted to wait for the Sept release of the next phone? We sat out this upgrade cycle as the ear buds seemed annoying and I didn’t hear of a feature I needed to have. Also happy to not be paying for a new phone. Younger son is anti-iPhone but has been forced to use an ancient one I had sitting in a drawer b/c his LG flat out died and the new LG has not been released in the US.

Somehow phones became a commodity in this house. Everyone perfectly content to drive 16+ year old car, but three years seems to be the outward limit on technology.

Today 1st Q grades released…great job by S17 (4 A’s, 2A+'s …with a schedule that includes 3APs and 1H course). GC sending the transcripts (including 1Q grades if they help the student) today as well.

B-)

@vandyeyes Is GC sending 1st q grades to EA schools or ED? I’m wondering whether it makes sense to send D’s for scholarship consideration.

OMG! DS texted me after school and said he’d come home an work on his submissions. (Who is this child?)

3 EAs DONE, Submitted, Naviance updated. I’m so nervous for him!! Now we wait, along with many of you, until mid-late December. Hoping (praying, really) for something positive from at least one of these schools so he doesn’t have to throw a couple of RDs out with 10 days notice.

@itsgettingreal17, Sending to all EA and ED schools…for S17, decisions from all these institutions will be out prior to end of 1st semester (mid to end of December)…hopefully then the madness can end for him/us

Anyone else sending quarter grades though not required?

our GC said they don’t send mid semester reports.

I would have no idea how to send quarter grades and do not tend to think it is expected/desired but rather the midyear school report is - perhaps to all schools the student applied to - EA & ED - I am not sure. I don’t see the common app requesting first quarter grades & our GCs as far as I know won’t send those. There is the “Optional School Report” that perhaps could be used though I think it might be more a change in the courses the student had reported taking. I am no expert here though!

I’m not sending anything post-application unless it is asked for or spelled out in the process.

I asked GC about it as S17 has less than desired grades (understatement of century :-w) They do not send mid semester report, but do send mid year report available after ED/EA decision dates. GC said some schools do ask for mid semester report or snap shot of grades and added that GC is not obliged to comply. We will have to ask GC to veto if any requests for the mid semester report are made. :)) >:)

Meanwhile S17 has mandatory office hours after school (mandated by moi) to remedy the situation >:)

Cross posting below from the college visit thread:

Just finished a tour of Drury University in MO. It moved way up to the top. Loved the campus, city, and the fact that is nearly right across the street from “downtown” and the much larger Mo State campus. The idea of attending a small school right near a big state school is really attractive to my D.

The visit was scheduled custom to my D and the interests she selected in the tour request form and that was really well done. They had her meet with a professor of biology who explained their pre-med scholars program which “allows students to focus solely on their undergraduate education and alleviates the pressure of taking the MCAT. The programs are non-binding, students can exit whenever they want to, but guaranteed acceptance is forfeited.” Essentially as long as the students have a min ACT score and maintain a min gpa freshman and sophomore year they have guaranteed acceptance to a variety of Med (MD and DO) schools (mostly in MO…but at least two on the list are very good med schools)

We also met with the honors college dean. I was very impressed with the programs as well. My d isn’t sure it’s for her, but she is willing to consider it now (before the meeting it was a big no in her mind)

I am relieved to have added another true safety school to our list.

Also…Drury accepts act scores if they are printed on the official HS transcript. I know our HS includes does include them. So that saves me the cost of sending her scores to one school! Now I need to email a couple others and see if they do the same.

After the tour D agreed she will be ready to send apps to 5 schools on her list before next weekend. She just wants to do one last review of the writing parts. We agreed to a working dinner date on Wednesday to pull the trigger. So yeah! It looks like something is finally go to happen here in CASPer land.

Senior night going on right now for my D. She is a cheerleader and we escorted her down the field. They do it for football players, cheerleaders and band. Tonight is their last home game. It’s all becoming too real!

D’s high school breaks each semester in 3 six week grading periods, six for the year. Semester grades are reported on the trasnscript.

Personally, I would feel awkward asking for the sexasemester grades.

But that is just me.

S threw another school onto the list. It is an EA through the CA, so he will be hoofing it to meet the Nov. 1 deadline. I just requested (and paid for) the obilgatory scores. We have a visit set up for after Thanksgiving. He also got an e-mail that another school on his list as RD that has an Nov. 1 EA date. I think that he should be able to finish that one up as well. Then he will be down to two left to submit. ^:)^

And another one bites the dust. Last EA just submitted! And only one app remaining in the queue with a very nice supplemental essay just awaiting the GC’s approval.

However, no LORs, GC or school report uploaded yet in Naviance. I need to trust them to do their job and work within the deadlines. They know what they’re doing. I really, really want to nag. But I haven’t. Yet.

@mtrosemom what an accomplishment for your DS. Congrats.

Not sending any grades from senior year. Until they accept you and ask for them.

Re grades for 1st quarter – - please see this post:

Rice - ED Applicant - Rice called to ask for 1st quarter grades. Interesting.

My son had to send first quarter grades when applying ED to Cornell three years ago. I believe they wanted the grades to come from Guidance, and not from him directly.

Question: why are so many people here opposed to submitting 1st Q grades?

@CT1417 – Personally - not opposed - I originally was inquiring about GPA recalculation after 1st quarter / semester. If a school requests them, then absolutely but a parent who is unsolicited just sending them if there’s not a compelling reason, does not seem to be really consistent with the Common App - certainly if you want to share them but are not sure the college wants them, you can call the school or perhaps check the website for handling “supplemental info” and transcripts.
