Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@mtrosemom University of Mississippi gives Eagle Scouts $1,500yr ($6,000 total). That probably almost covers the cost of supporting his efforts all these years!

Not opposed to 1st Q per-se (assuming they are livable and we shall see about that lol, they are moving where they need to be but aren’t quite there) but as we aren’t doing any ED I don’t see why they are needed. If they are requested we will send but it’s not a standard item on our transcripts.

@CT1417 I’m not opposed to quarter grades, in fact hers will be better than last year, I just have no idea how or why I would send them if they weren’t asked for.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek it’s called extraordinary, ordinary people, written and read by rice.

The guidance counselor would send the grades anyway, in the form of an updated transcript.

I wouldn’t worry about the possibility. If the school wants the grades, they would contact the student (as in a prior post–sorry on mobile) and/or the guidance counselor via email.

@VickiSoCal – this probably works better at a smaller school than a large state university, but the student could send them to his local AO. Having said that, those AOs will be busy reading apps, but many of them continue to communicate with applicants even after the EA deadline.

I confess that I don’t actually recall how my son forwarded his grades. Also, older son applied during the new CA debacle where all colleges extended their deadlines by at least a week and the AOs had to deal with a lot of random questions from applicants.

Once the current applicant submits his apps, we will need to look into which schools wants 1st Q grades and which do not. My guess is that the state schools will not want additional info, but that is just a wild guess based on no research.

@STEM2017 … great idea, now… how to make it a ‘leadership’ project?

S17’s school waits to send all transcripts until today (unless there was a 10/15 deadline), specifically so 1stQ grades can be sent as well (in one bundle), but whether the 1st Q grades are included is decided on a case by case basis (as to whether it supports the application). Of course if it’s required for an ED then it goes no matter.

DS is taking the Act (no writing) tomorrow for the third and final time. Last push to boost the math score! Positive thoughts welcome!

His scores are set to automatically go to 4 of his EA schools in hopes that they will arrive in time to be added to his application. The scores will no doubt arrive after Nov 1, but the schools will already have the 2 earlier scores in case they get to his application early. Plus they’ll know he plans to take the test b/c you have to put that info in the common app. We have gone back and forth on whether the direct send is too risky. He got the same composite both times he’s taken the test (32) so I feel like he’s proven to be consistent. He feels like if he bombs the test it will look bad, but If we wait until the scores are posted first they may not be delivered until December and sending them will be a waste of money.

Anyone else in this situation? LOL Probably not - I think most posters on this thread are long finished with testing!!

@curiositycat333 I lost a few hours trying to sort out Parchment!! And I still ended up doing it wrong. It may be easier for gc but it was a pain for me. Apparently We don’t fill out the school name, we send it to the Common App, then input the school names, or something like that. Then we submit a paper transcript request to the HS and they approve the Parchment process. We pay the school, not Parchment. The whole thing is super confusing.

Well since it’s not even the end of the first quarter no first quarter grades are sent for ED/EA. Don’t even now how one would do that since our transcripts are sent my Parchment (school’s not involved) and the transcript only takes grades per semester.

Good luck to your S @jmek15 !!!

Hope your S does great @jmek15. S will be taking the 11/5 SAT, so we’re not quite done either

@jmek15 We’re almost in the same boat. D17 wanted to take the ACT w/writing one more time for two RD schools that require it but she is hoping to boost her math score for the EA/ED schools that superscore. We only listed the RD schools for automatic send and are hoping if she gets a great score we can get them to her ED/EA schools on time.

Just dropped off son for ACT part deux. I didn’t auto send this one to any schools. He struggles with the test so I need to see the result. His first result was “good enough” and that one is already in the hands of his schools. If he improves this time, I’ll let it fly. Fingers crossed but I’m not counting on anything spectacular.

He’s in a good space mentally. His soccer team played and won their last regular season game last night. He scored 2 of their 4 goals to seal their undefeated season. He was carried off the field like Rudy. Emotional moment for dad. I’ll let him bask in the glory for a while.

@jmek15 same for us, D will take SAT on 11/5 and we’ve been debating the same thing, auto send or not, i’m leaning toward auto send just for the EA schools. other consideration, should they take the writing portion again? Is it really necessary?

@STEM2017 …sounds like a huge confidence booster last night! What a great way to end his senior season!!!

:::::::::::::::::::::::fingers crossed for the ACT for your son and all the others taking it today:::::::::::::::::::::

Good luck to the ACT testers today – hope it goes well!

@STEM2017 – happy for your son on that wonderful soccer experience!!

Good luck ACT takers today

@STEM2017 RUDY RUDY RUDY

@STEM2017 do any of your other kids play sports? I’m kind of getting a little sad for you just thinking about next season!

Oh, and UA does have a beautiful soccer field/stadium.

@STEM2017 @jmek15 Good luck to your kids on the ACT today! Believe it or not, I know a few kids who are taking it today FOR THE FIRST TIME, and haven’t taken the SAT either. So I think you’re both in a good position with some tests already in hand.
