Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Question regarding semester grades and EA application:

All of my son17’s apps are in. Everything is in at the schools except 2 schools require 1st semester grades.

Fine, except I think my son is going to end with a C in Honors Pre-Calc. 1st C on a semester report card ever. It’s the hardest class in the school according to the teacher and most kids only earn a B for final grade.

All of his other semester grades seem fine, mostly A’s a B or B+. AP classes and all honors.

Do you think he should write a note explaining how he did poorly on his 1st pre-calc exam and that he’s been going in for extra help and is doing fine now? Don’t bother? He’s not applying to be a math major or CS guy.

I’m hoping his recent acceptance into National Biz Honor Society and newly increased ACT score may throw them off the scent that he is stinking it up in pre-calc, ha. :-j

@RightCoaster Don’t explain low grades unless extenuating circumstances.

@mtrosemom – does your D’s college not assess a surcharge? I can’t recall now, but I know that my son’s school’s surcharge was more than I would have earned in miles. It was a flat percentage which eliminated the value of miles.

@Fishnlines29 your D AP physics teacher sounds just like my D teacher as well. She is HATING physics and trying to self teach. The one good thing about taking it is that she said she knows she will never be an engineer.

It’s sounding like we need a lot more good physics teachers in this country.

Coming in a bit late on the PDF vs. Word format thing, I’ll also note that PDF retains formatting. If you send someone a Word document, you have no guarantee they’re seeing what you wanted them to see. (And then there’s the whole Word macro virus danger—not as big an issue as it used to be, but still there.)

Edited to correct a really really bad misspelling.

D received her first honors college acceptance today: Global Scholars pathway in Lewis Honors College at U of Kentucky. Decision was very quick. Fingers crossed for merit.

@itsgettingreal17 Congratualations to you D!!! <:-P

Congrats @itsgettingreal17

DS starts slow with grades and catches up by end of the semester by strategizing for each teacher. I am glad GC didn’t send mid term report (she said she never sends) last week. This week all his grades moved up and only one is B+ and close to A-.

@Dolemite Can you share how your D received the travel voucher? S applied to WUSTL as well and we haven’t visited yet. S is not great about carefully reading his emails, so maybe I just need to wrest access and go through them myself.

@CT1417, D’s college assesses a surcharge for using a crdit card, but frankly I don’t remember what the surcharge was as we only used that payment method once to date.

@IABooks She received a letter in the mail only. She had not applied yet but had sent scores. She’s Hispanic so that may have been a factor.

DS14’s college also levy a percentage for using credit card for tuition. My recollection is that it was high enough to negate any benefit you can derive from point, travel, etc…

@mtrosemom – got it! I know the feeling…as I mentioned, I looked at it more than two years ago, saw that I would lose out if I paid with CC, and cannot now recall the % they charge.

The administrator for my COBRA medical premium charges something like $20 per electronic payment. Crazy!

So, our good news is that D17 got through the RIT interview just fine last night - she wasn’t nervous, and handled herself well.

The bad news is that now she knows more about the school, she’s not really that interested anymore. :expressionless: I guess now that she’s seen some LACs that she’s really liked, that’s become her ideal, and the pre-professional focus of RIT is not satisfying that for her. I mean, I’m glad she’s figuring this out before I plunk down a $50 application fee, but I had been hoping for her to have a nice “likely admit” option besides state school and that had seemed like a good choice since her friend is so happy there. Oh well! I know there are tons of LACs that should be happy to have her with her stats, but I was kind of looking forward to being done with figuring this all out… 8-}

Congrats @itsgettingreal17 !! How long did it take from submission to acceptance for UKy? D is still working on her honors essay, but I don’t think she is looking at any of the Pathways options.

@TimEnchanter Admission took less than 1 week and honors decision less than a week later. She just received acceptance in mail yesterday. Got email today about honors less than week from receiving email that honors college had received her application for review.

@hadmeathello I was going to link cogito.org as the best go to source for summer camps, but the database isn’t there. You might try looking through the links provided here: https://www.tjhsst.edu/studentservices/career-center/summer.html

@IABooks , @Dolemite , did your C visit WUSTL or are you planning to? I have been hearing horrible stories of no visit, no admission!
