@hadmeathello What life?
I will be seriously at a loss after the remaining 2-3 apps are done. Wait, plus the honors and scholarships apps.
Wait, I have to ensure DS graduates high school =)) turning in service hours and missing Tech requirement, and get a driver’s license soon. [-(
That gives me things to obsess over till May.
And then I’ll obsess over the dorm storage solutions :))
Then I have S19, ha! :))
We got the first app submitted this week. Now we are anticipating the school to upload their portion of the National Merit info sometime today. Yes, really.
QOTD How frequently do you check YOUR kid’s college portals?
I wonder 3 times a day is frequent enough. =))
QOTD: We didn’t really check the portals at all with our first kid. With this one, we’ll probably just have him verify the info when he gets the portal info. Last time I’d see when things were starting to happen on CC and have my son check. There was never really anything to check until acceptance time. We’ll just have him make sure on the 2 CA schools that the LORs got there OK.
So a coach from a school my son was interested in a while back waits until 2 days before EA apps due to contact him and tell him there is a spot on the team for him. After 4 months of no contact. Ha. Classic. These D3 coaches have a tough time filling out all of their rosters sometimes because there is truly no commitment to the kids and vice versa. He must have had a few prospects drop at last minute.
I’ll have to talk with son later about it. I think he moved on.
Question: Naviance predictability? I still don’t know what to trust. My son falls into the good part of the graph of all of his schools of interest. However, his GPA is a little bit lower than the average accepted because he ramped up the difficulty of his class after his freshman year after posting all A’s. According to all the Northeastern data you read, his test scores and GPA make him only average at best. But on our school’s Naviance data, everyone in his zone got in. Unfortunately, I just don’t think the school has all of the data captured and loaded, such as all of the flat out rejections.
That should be the toughest school for my son to get into based on what I read, but maybe they like to admit kids from our school? He wants to go back and check it out again. I think we will head over this weekend to just walk around and get a vibe for it.
QOTD: portals
I checked them all once last week to confirm stuff had been received. They are still waiting on 1 letter of rec.
I will check next week to make sure it’s all there. Then I’m going to try not to look for a few weeks. I doubt we’ll hear anything anyways, until after Thanksgiving.
@payn4ward – haha… It doesn’t end after dorm storage solutions! When not obsessing about our senior and apps, there’s always the one already in college to stress about – summer plans, internships, adding majors, studying abroad, safety, health, and then what to do after!!! Of course, all that is with even less authority and control than we have now with the senior! :-SS
QOTD: I check whenever I don’t forget. I am seriously bummed whenever there is no status update. It’s like I should expect to see a big message saying: $$ IT’S FREE!! $$
@RightCoaster I think Northeastern is very different now than a few years ago. Our school Naviance shows data over 10 years or more, so I think the stats are skewed due to the past lower stats.
@hadmeathello When you get that message, be sure to let the rest of us know which college it was, kay?
QOTD: We (it’s an enforced bonding moment with S) check portals about twice a week. Which is really too often – they don’t say much right now – but less often than I’d like.
How often do you check the portal? With by daughter I did this obsesivly every few days. S27 isn’t going to give me access, so I’m going to have to bug him endlessly instead. That will drive him up the wall.
We check the portals once a week during college chat. Although if they’re all in and complete this sunday, we may take a break in November from college chat until December.
@Fishnlines29 we only have one portal so far but it doesn’t show either FAFSA or Profile and it is our one PROFILE school. However we have the processed and then submitted dates from both so they have to be there.
In the case of the one portal we have, it seems limited. It only shows one ACT score but in checking with admissions, they do have both. The financial stuff isn’t a “checklist” item on that portal in terms of what the school is waiting on so I don’t expect Profile or FAFSA to show up in the portal.
@curiositycat333 I would have used the UW GPA, all years. That is what they will want.
QOTD: Portals… my DS rolls his eyes every time I ask about college. He says I’m obsessed. He submitted 3 EAs on October 21st and has only 1 portal invite. All 3 have “downloaded” the apps on CA and all 3 have emailed “Thank you for your application”. So, at least I know they have them.
Annoyingly, the one portal he does have only mentions the 3 things missing from HS … doesn’t say what they DO have, i.e. test scores. UGH!
Of course, I’d like to get on the phone or email all of the schools, but I’m trying not to “be obsessed”.
DS asked for his LOR from physics teacher in early August. In early October, said teacher sent a “student questionnaire”.
GC says don’t worry about when school “package” is sent. It will get there in enough time. I check naviance for updates 3 - 4 times per day. I really want to see “submitted” but all I ever see is requested. DS did everything early or on-time. School is taking their sweet time.
This is all very difficult for me… I am a when, where, why, for how long kind of person. I’m trying to CHILL. Being a parent is HARD. :((
So I am not the only one a bit concerned about docs not showing up on the application portals – UMD not showing transcript from school - it was mailed a week or so ago (GC said could not submit online) or a recommendation that was emailed. Hope it will be ok – Nov 1 is so close.
Portals: I’ve been deputized to check them for my daughter. She says she has enough going on to not be bothered with the admisnitrivia, and that I shuld let her know if anything important comes up.
LoR update: So my daughter’s primary recommender had uploaded her letter but hadn’t known she needed to hit the submit button after doing so, and then had sorta-unexpected surgery (as in, she knew it would have to be done, but then things happened to push it earlier), so the status had been “started” for nearly a month. As of this morning, though, it shows as completed and downloaded by the two schools whose Common App applications my daughter has already submitted. This includes the one school where the EA deadline is Monday, and that one doesn’t require a second letter, so that’s a relief. (The secondary recommender gave my daughter a hard copy of her letter yesterday and said she’d upload it today, but that she’s never done a Common App letter before—so who knows how that will go?) The GC report, on the other hand, still says “started”, but today’s a teacher training/no school for students day and the GC said she’d get it completed and submitted today, so here’s hoping.
… UGH … just found out one of DS’s schools says: all materials must be RECEIVED by Nov 1. Guess I’m going to need to call the school.
Ditto
I’ve been deputized as well. S would vastly prefer not to be bothered and leave me alone in my obsessions. Thank goodness. I suspect however that S19 will not be nearly as accommodating. LOL!
@acdchai - We are not instate for Virginia. However, UVA accepts about 10 students from my DDs’s school a year. She took the application seriously and wrote good supplements. Her stats are higher than anyone who has applied from her school in the last 5 years. I talked to DD about safeties yesterday and she had already moved a school from I am thinking about to applying to on naviance that for her is a safety. Even though the school accepts less than 20% of applicants, she has been told she will be accepted unless she writes something inappropriate on her application. I am reluctantly accepting that this is as good as it is going to get. Her school stresses not throwing lots of applications out to rack up acceptances because you can be taking opportunities away from your classmates. She is very sensitive to this.
