Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@stlarenas Holy cow! I would be pulling my hair out! So sorry about that! Unbelievable.

@stlarenas, that is just irresponsible of the teacher who said yes to an LOR and then never did it before taking leave. And hopefully the other teacher is telling the truth and has the LOR done and can easily send it. Not good adult examples for the kids! I do hope your D gets stellar LORs from two teachers!

@mtrosemom I am thinking (hoping) that the teacher just forgot. I have been nagging D to follow up for weeks, but my D kept saying the teacher was never at school. The note was a general message to all the Student council kids ( this teacher is the sponsor). So it wasn’t a direct reply to my D asking about her LOR. But now my D feels, understandably, uncomfortable asking about her letter. She has another teacher she can ask, but just feels bad about pressuring her to get it done quick.

I do NOT like the red ticking clock icon on the CA, it stresses me out.

I am glad to have an explanation why some have the yellow dots for the writing and others do not. I had no idea those were a 2 step submittal process so good to know!

@stlarenas
I think the new teacher, if your D explains what happened, will be understanding. I’m confused by the first LOR writer though as he shouldn’t be emailing it to your D directly which is what it sounded like from your post.

@stlarenas Something similar happened to D. She lined up 3 teachers for LORs last spring. One moved and although D was able to get in touch with her, she, for some reason, decided not to write any LORs for any of her past students. Thankfully D only needed 2. Good luck! I’m betting another teacher will gladly write her an LOR quickly if she explains why she is asking so late.

LOL D said the same thing.

D received her first interview request. She’ll be interviewing for the business honors program at UT. Time to get the interview prep going. Wish us luck! :slight_smile:

@itsgettingreal17 …gonna do the prep on the way back from Pitt??

@stlarenas
it happened to us too…one retired, one maternity leave, one actually DID write the LOR, only for it to be lost in space with the summer naviance updates.ita that the whole thing sent a terrible message to my kid, and it absolutely left a bad taste in my mouth. it has been a colossal nightmare. we had to scramble to find someone new and (well, because its US), had to school the teacher on how she needed to go to guidance and get manually added to naviance so she was in the dropdown as that is proper procedure in our district. hardly my kids job, but hey, we do what we have to and fortunately that teacher was receptive after I got involved…but that in itself was an issue–our district values kids taking charge of their own stuff, but o-m-g, sometimes an adult voice works wonders.

all i can say is keep on top of it. i know how obnoxious it feels to haunt teachers…but unfortunately thats what has to be done.

hope it gets done asap.

@stlarenas wow how unbelievably frustrating! That is so inconsiderate. I’m angry for you!

My D had her orchestra concert the other day too. A fun Halloween special. Their last song was Thriller, I wanted to get up and dance in the aisle like in the video. But I think my D would’ve crawled into a hole. So fun to embarrass our children.

@stlarenas That is so frustrating, Let us know how it all works out… that’s stressful for sure.

Does anyone know if colleges that receive the FAFSA or CSS profile show this on their student portal status pages? We do not see them listed as received like all other documents. We only sent the FAFSA to the few EA schools D applied to and now we want to add to the list but it wipes out the others schools so not sure if we should be concerned about that.

Holy mackerel. The Parents of HS Class 2016 didn’t hit page 1300 until April of this year. We need to get a life.

A quick question… D told me today that " the more I read my CA essay, the more I hate it". Is this a normal at this point?

They don’t have school today so I took a day off too. Seize the day, as they are numbered before she leaves the house!!

@payn4ward , CSS better be processed faster. We pay $8 for it!!

@stlarenas Sorry to hear the LOR saga. I feel it is time to show up at school with rubber chicken.

@Fishnlines29 I don’t see it in the portal yet (it’s been only one day) but DS received email saying that “your FAFSA was processed successfully. … What Happens Next - Your FAFSA information was sent to the school(s) on your FAFSA,” so if you received that email, I think it should be fine.

One school shows CSS was received but not yet FAFSA, so I suppose CSS is processed sooner.

@SincererLove Yup, we get what we pay for. I paid $9 for application plus $16 per school. :frowning:
DS is “it is good enough for me!” kid, so we did not have that problem.

LOR - UPDATE: Last night my D got a personal email from the teacher that went on leave telling her “I got you” and reassuring her she still working on her LOR. She had 11/1 as the “due” date (which technically is the due date for her first EA school). D responded with thanks, and told the teacher she already submitted some apps via CA so sooner is better :slight_smile:

I fully believe the other teacher would not lie to D about writing the LOR. He has taught her since freshman year and they have a great relationship. I am sure he thought he sent it where it was supposed to go (and probably thought her sent it to her too…it sounds like all the teacher do at her school). But I think my D is one of the few kids that even apply to schools via the CA (nearly all go to state flagships or directionals) so it is likely most of the staff there doesn’t understand how CA works.

However I think D is going to ask the backup teacher to write one for her just in case :slight_smile:

@stlarenas Wishes to you for excellent and speedy LORs at this point.

@SincererLove Well, I’m sure S doesn’t re-read anything he writes until I point out errors, so that’s not normal for him. :)) But I think there is a tipping point after a few readings where anything starts to sound less appealing. If she originally thought it was a good essay, has gotten generally positive feedback from reviewers and has already made improvements to it 2 or 3 times, I’d advise her to stop looking at it. Of course, she would then need to rely on you or another trusted person to review any additions or changes for typos, transitions, etc.

A benefit (?!) of 2-step submission which I can see as a CASPer is that I can ask DS to submit the main Application part of CA now (it is all done, it even says “Ready”, why wait? [-( ) and tell him to do Supplements later.
That way he can click Naviance as “applied” then the Transcript/LORs get push out from Naviance to CA. GC won’t do anything until CA is submitted.
After those are sent, I can nag… now only one essay is left to complete this step! >:)

Risk of this strategy is DS won’t get around to finish supplements and I will be down $$ :-&
Perhaps that’s what the 2-step colleges are counting on >:) :-&

S17 submitted his first AP last night. I did look it over. I ended up questioned what GPA he put down. We have been over this before on this board in his case there are 6 GPA’s on his transcript, and it’s not real clear what they want. Two don’t apply since they are 10-12 GPA’s calculated for University of California. He put down the highest GPA of those who were left. (Total weighted vs. Academic weighted) I couldn’t fault his logic that since they didn’t specify he got to put the highest number down. They get his transcript so I guess it doesn’t really matter what he puts in that field, but WWYD?

@stlarenas There are some committed teachers. I have a relative who was a H.S. teacher for the past number of years but moved this summer. She’s posting of FB how she’s writing letters of rec for her kids even while not working that job anymore.

@stlarenas wrote

Oh, that stinks! :frowning:

We do have lives-that’s why this thread is so entertaining-all the stuff we’re doing make it here. I like to think I’m coming up with new and fantastic ways to screw up how to help my kid apply to college, and then sharing it.

@hadmeathello, I have to get a life? What section of the family profile of the common requires that?

Ah, the October panic…
