Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@Dolemite I looked this morning and the deadline was Oct 25 for taking the math one again in nov.

That’s a good point about taking it again for Rd olin, I hadn’t thought about that. D did study for about two months, though (using the two books people recommended here), so I’m not sure if she’ll improve.

Ironically she did super good on the molecular biology, and she did no studying for that at all.

@Agentninetynine I’m so sorry, I wish I had better words.

Also whovers poor kid got stuck on a greyhound bus, that sucks! (I’m on my mobile and can’t navigate as well upthread)

On Common App, Counselor Recommendation & Teacher Evaluations show “Downloaded”
Do they mean colleges downloaded? or Does it just mean Naviance uploaded (and CA downloaded) there? :-/

On CA, I also found out that one needs sign and “submit” both Application and Writing Supplement separately.
When I logged back onto CA the next day, the Writing Supplement was NOT submitted. :open_mouth: Important thing to remember for the last minute DDS’s ;

@payn4ward We don’t have Naviance and D17s CA components showed “downloaded” 1-2 days after submitting so I think it means colleges downloaded.

Does anybody know if you can send selected AP scores (taken May 2016) to college? Can’t find the place in College Board site for this. Thanks.

@payn4ward —now you have me worried about CA writing supplement not being submitted.

When I view the only CA school my son has applied to, I see a PDF of the app, identified as having been downloaded on Oct 16th. The CA essay appears on page 8 and then the school-specific writing appears on the last page.

Should I still be worried, as I have no idea if he signed off on the writing sample.

@payn4ward - You worried me about having to submit both the application and writing supplement as my daughter hasn’t done that for the three applications submitted to date. I just reviewed it with her and you need to do the two submissions only when there is a yellow dot in the second column. Some colleges that require supplemental, essays embed them into the common app.

Thank you @Testingearly for the above info.

@CT1417 @Testingearly No worries!
Sorry it was not clear. Some colleges have 1-step process where the supplemental writing is embedded in the Application in their Questions section.
Other colleges have 2-step processes where Supplements are separate and need to be signed and submitted again.
Sorry for confusion! ^:)^

Also remember that submitting the payment on the CA isn’t the same as submitting the app. They still have to go back and hit “submit application” after payment.

@payn4ward – no need to apologize; all info is useful in this process. I will mention this to my son, in case he ever gets around to filing the two Nov 1st apps.

@Testingearly – thanks for the yellow dot heads-up. The next two do not have yellow dots (but one has a TON of writing prompts), but the remainder of the apps seem to have a yellow dot, so something to watch out for.

@payn4ward - I totally agree with @CT1417 - all information shared is greatly appreciated! I hadn’t focused on the two columns in the CA until your post.

@hetn99 I do not believe any colleges require you to send AP scores now. You just self-report them and then send to the registrar’s office if admitted.

Great music program at school tonight - student & faculty mixed performances – featuring orchestra, band, jazz, rock, choir and more - very special. I know how you all are feeling with the last band or other “last” experience happening!! :frowning:

@Testingearly @CT1417 Who knew those green checks, yellow dots, and red dashes had meaning! =))
In addition, now there are red clocks, red and yellow flags, blue arrows on dashboard.
CA went full on icons =))

@payn4ward – It is really a pity we cannot put all of this knowledge to productive use!

@CA1543 We had a music program last night. My D had to do the quick change because they ended with the marching band. They ordered new uniforms for the season, and they just arrived, so D got to wear her new uniform for the first and last time last night. @-) They were rockin’. It was very cool, and they did a special ‘bow’ for the seniors, who all went to the front of the stage and danced like fools.

D also received a Dean’s scholarship from IU-B today in the mail. Not enough to make it a go, but it’s a nice start. She’ll be meeting with the Dean of Admission to her school of choice at an event on Saturday when we go visit. It’s supposed to be 75 and sunny! Thanks goodness…it’s already so dreary around here.

D followed up with her two teachers who agreed to write LOR. One said he emailed it to her weeks ago (he didn’t, and it isn’t started in the CA)…and the other sent a message saying she is taking a medical leave of absence for the rest of the semester!

I told D she needs to politely but firmly ask the 1st teacher to try submitting/sending his again, and she needs to politely beg another teacher to please write one (soon) for her in place of the teacher who is out.

She much for asking for LOR the 1st week of school to get them in early.

@testingearly if you are in-state for UVA and have naviance to back you up UVA can basically be a safety with the caveat that if something goes very wrong you will have to scramble for some rolling admission schools potentially. If you are out of state it isn’t really a safety for anyone. I posted in the other thread but our school has a bad streak with Jefferson nominees and acceptance to UVA. We have a huge number of applicants in our naviance but there is at least 1 candidate every year who is not accepted who is in the very highest tier of scores and gpa. UVA is big on ECs and leadership so I would have to assume that those applicants were possibly lacking in that area. There really is no reason not to find a safety though. There are plenty of common app schools with no supplement that can be used which would take no time and very little cost. Some even give fee waivers too. It’s highly unlikely you may need it but it is possible. We had a neighbor who applied to Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton plus some that should have been matches and was denied everywhere he applied except 1 super safety he was unwilling to attend. He found a neighboring state school with rolling admissions and is very happy there now but it was very stressful and expensive because it was past the merit aid deadline.

@fishlines29 my son goes to a very expensive school and they don’t accept credit card payments at all. They will let you pay monthly payments for a small extra fee but it’s only checks/echecks or payments via wire transfer from brokerage or 529 type accounts.
