Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Is it Auburn University? Maybe it was tufts syndrome they thought she was wanting somewhere else and was using it as a safety

@MotherOfDragons D also did worse than desired on her SAT 2 Physics test. Two are recommended at a couple of her schools, so it’s getting sent anyway, since she only took two. Full steam ahead.

@hadmeathello S had that issue with the Physics test too. His score on the AP Physics 1 test should make up for it.

@stlarenas depends on the school.

Some schools require the supporting documents (tax returns, W-2s, business doc. etc) be sent by iDoc. CSS says iDoc will contact me in November.

Some schools require the documents be sent by postal mail. I sent one to my D’s ED school using USPS.

Some schools don’t want the documents untill applicants are accepted/matriculated.

They gave you the CSS acknowlegment, right? At the top of the acknowlegment, there is a chart of the schools your kid is applying to. Each school has a code to indicate what method they want the docments to be sent.

@youcee Problem is (well, there is not really problem at all. It is what it is.) that APs are not used for admission, typically.

@HiToWaMom I saw that chart in the acknowledgement…but I sure hope there are more instructions to come, because I didn’t screenshot or save it and it wasn’t sent to me in an email so I don’t see any way to look at it again. And I don’t quite have a photographic memory

@hadmeathello The UC app does have a place for completed AP scores, since those are our son’s primary target it should help in his case.

@hadmeathello I think schools consider them. Almost every school asks for self reported scores.

Re SAT subject tests - I thought only a few schools ask for Chem or Physics - for certain science or engineering majors. Many accept biology or do not require any. If good bio or chem subject test score (700 or so) perhaps do not worry about physics? My DS took it bc he only had bio otherwise for science and CMU, Cornell, UPenn seem to want chem or physics (or prefer physics for engineering) and he wants to major in elec eng. so kinda had to. (He prepped over summer some & in Sept.) It really is pretty harsh to “require” physics bc AP Physics 1 does not cover about 50% of the material - no idea how many students take Physics C as juniors but not at our school. MIT - for example says any science and math SAT subject test is fine. If physics is really “needed” for a school a student strongly wants to apply to (I think there are only about 3-4 schools looking for it or chem), Nov. or possibly Dec. test date could be an option for RD. All the testing is such a burden - on top of everything else. I don’t think my DS would take it again - hard enough to manage current school work load, college apps & his ECs which he cares a lot about. I truly hope in a few months our kids will get to enjoy senior year - we have big midterms at the end of January - so if not happy with EA results, will still be stressful around here until that’s over.

@stlarenas Oh you can retrieve it easily. Log in to CSS Profile page. Click “Check Status of Application” on the left hand side. At the bottom of the next page, it says “Click here to see your Acknowledgment.” When you click it, you can see the chart of the schools and the codes for additional requirements.

As for when to file, it doesn’t say it here, so you have to look into each college’s financial aid office website, but it’s usually the same date as the application deadline.

@HiToWaMom Nevermind…I found a way to get to the acknowledgement and now have it saved to a PDF…

…move along - nothing to see here

@CA1543 I think that’s what our son found too, that AP Physics 1 didn’t align well with the subject test. He had to self study some sections for a month prior.

@MotherOfDragons Sorry to hear about the Math 2 grade.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I guess Auburn is now a lottery school? Did she apply ED? It’s a bit frustrating, hard to know what goes on in those college admissions officers. I’ve known many kids to get crushed with their ED admits. Hopefully this girl will get admitted to other places and she will be happy in the long run.

@yousee That’s good to know about UC’s since S17’s AP scores should help his case as well. S17’s not focusing oj the UC app yet. till his EA 11/1

And of course AP Physics 1 doesn’t align with the subject tests. Subjects tests are supposed to align to H.S standards, AP classes are supposed to be college level courses. AP Physics 1 is only Mechanics without Calculus, to cover all the subjects you need AP Physics II. (I don’t like the way the AP board redesigned the Physics as a 2 year course.) The SAT Physics Subject test is aligned on a regular non-AP Physics course that includes Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics as well as A&E.

D takes a weird double-block AP Chem/Phys class. Has had it over the last two years. She took the Physics AP last year and got a 5, but her teacher told her to wait until this year for the subject test so that they could cover material that would be on the test. Who knows, I deferred to her teacher. Plus, she was originally thinking Engineering for a major…which has changed now. So, I don’t think it will hurt her.

@itsgettingreal17 I don’t recall any schools asking for AP scores yet…of course, I think they’re in the CA, right? Maybe some of the non-CA schools asked, but I don’t recall at this point. I think I’m ready for this all to be done, too!

@stlarenas not all schools require anything additional for docs, we only have one profile school and our acknowledgement lists nothing additional required. Ok it doesn’t actually say that but there are no additional requirements listed in the place it wold be. It is easy to retrieve and check.

@IABooks No, I am sorry you are right! It’s not going to be above 209. Thank you for catching that.

Dd just submitted her very last application. She still has 1 essay for a specialized program app and hopefully an additional application into a specific major. That app, however, will not even open for several weeks. So now, she can refocus her energies and enjoy the rest of 2016!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek - I’m wondering if there is anything on the friends transcript from either school about a discipline issue. Anything like that could cause an issue.

Hope everyone is feeling better than I. Got food poisoning last night and it was a very rough night and day.

@MotherOfDragons Could your D take it again since she is going for RD?

@Dolemite Ugh. Sorry to hear that. Hope you can clear that out quickly and have fluid, etc. Hugs. :x
