Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@hadmeathello – Thanks for the clarification - glad you noticed that and were able to submit it!

For us - UMD still not showing receipt of science teachers LoR. At least transcript arrived. Technically complete bc GC and English teacher submitted LoRs but it’ll be frustrating if the science one - which the teacher said he emailed and got a confirm on - never shows up.

One very big, EA app left to complete by tomorrow. Then 6-7 that still need various supps but we have 6-8 weeks for those, thank goodness!

@itsgettingreal17 It’s definitely time for bribery!! I’m proof that it works. I didn’t even have to fork over too much to get Son17 to get everything done. Well worth it!!

Good news over here on semester grades. Son17 was able to score a 95 on a pre-calc test which basically saved his butt in that class. He rallied on a few other classes too, and should finish with decent enough grades, 4 A’s and a few B range in tough classes. That’s good enough, I’ll take it  I’ve just told him to “hold it together man”!

@RightCoaster Congrats to your son on the pre-calc test! I know that one had you worried. Well done!

Passports are at 16. S17 needed one last year and it’s a 10 year version. The 5 year version for S19 was a NIGHTMARE. NCP being MIA and all that…despite my having legal documentation of full rights. Long story. Anyway…give yourself plenty of time.

@carachel2 @STEM2017 I read that last night and have to admit it freaked me out. Admittedly b/c S17 discusses politics/philosophy/sociology way more than I would like in his essay. Nothing remotely along those lines, or over the top (or that leaning lol) but still…it makes me nervous and he was definitely encouraged to go there by his AP Lit teacher. The original iteration did not really go there at that level. He does have some politics/philosophy/sociology EC’s (though not at the top of the EC list) and frankly, there is a consistent theme between his essay, at least one of the LOR’s and his EC’s. From a character standpoint I think it reflects well on him and matches the schools on his list. Ya know, in a social justice crusader kind of way without being critical of anyone.

Sigh.

BUT I read a post like that, fake or not, and it freaks me out. I actually didn’t sleep well.

Woke up to a fee waiver for a school on S17’s list…direct from the AO following his interview, where I know those subjects were discussed. It’s not a super selective school, it should be a safety, he is a lower/mid stats kid but still, it was nice to wake up to.

I can breathe again.

I think.

@Dave_N that sounds scary, glad you made it through without incident.

@payn4ward @hadmeathello yes, that is part of the push. Lots of adults actually just running into this and being deported to countries they have no memory of, nor do they speak the language. Absolutely heartbreaking. If you’ve adopted, make sure your kids paperwork is in order.

I need to get on the ball with global entry for all of us, and renew H and I’s passport as we will need them this summer.

Okay, jumping in apparently way late here ;-). You guys have been busy! I spent most of the spring on the NMSF score prediction thread … and DD missed it by 1 point in MD. Oh well.

I have not read all 1318 pages, but stumbled on this thread because my search for Auburn turned up @Mom2aphysicsgeek’s post about her Dd’s friend not getting in. That is terrifying! Hope they figure out it was a mistake or something like missing the essay or incomplete transcript, or something. My DD just got her acceptance to Auburn (1560 SAT, 35 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA), but is having trouble logging in with the info they provided to do the scholarship application.

We are currently stressing about the 11/1 deadline for UMD. We are in state. It actually ranks fairly high on her list of schools. Yay. She submitted her application a few weeks ago. The portal shows they’ve received her test scores, transcript, and counselor LOR. But no teacher recommendations. DD let them know when she submitted her application and, “gently reminded” them of the 11/1 deadline. Then, at the beginning of last week when they still hadn’t done anything, she spoke to them again. They both told her, “Yeah, I know when the deadline is. It will get done.” Ahem. It is now the day before the deadline. Still nothing on the portal. Grumble, grumble, grumble. But what else can she do? She asked them to write for her last May. She filled out the school’s “teacher recommendation info form” on Naviance before the summer. They had her list of schools and deadlines the first week of September. And we’re still down to pushing the deadline. At best, it’s a bad example, but it borders on being irresponsible.

She’s done 4 applications (Auburn, Alabama, U of MD, UMBC) and has 3 to go (UDel, VT, Bucknell). The goal is to get them all done by Dec. 1. We shall see…

@ailinsh1 Ouch. Sorry for your D and NMSF. A few of us are right there with ya (except, I was lucky enough to avoid the monitoring of the NMSF prediction thread).

Now you have me worried about this documentation needed for adoptees. I thought things had gotten easier back around 2000 when they started having IR-4 (?) visas for adopted kids, where citizenship was granted once the adopted touched US soil, as long as both parents traveled to receive the child in the foreign country. That was our case, both times, so I think we’re OK. We actually re-adopted D17, which was unnecessary but ceremonial. It was also expensive, so we didn’t do it for D20 =))

I better start reading up on this stuff again. I know there is a thread for it that I have to catch up on.

@Fishnlines29 - Not sure what your definition of “fast approaching” is, but the UC apps are not due until Nov. 30th; they have been available for a while, but, to the best of my knowledge, the first day you can actually submit in Nov. 1st and the last day is Nov. 30th.

I know that some of the UCs are building new housing, but from what I understand, there are “forced triples” (but those exists at lots of privates, too) and sophomores that have to scramble.

@mtrosemom 17 yr olds don’t need both parents. I took Dd in to renew her passport in Aug and I was the only one present.

Such sad news about @fallenchemist. Thanks for letting us know, @STEM2017

@Dave_N – I’m so glad to know I’m not the only parent who has been tempted to suggest (or perhaps demand) that my child skip a minor assignment or two in order to meet app deadlines. Crazy, isn’t it?

@ailinsh1 – this MD app is going to be my bugaboo. Son’s second teacher uploaded LOR to Naviance very late last night, but MD posted son’s app as complete the day before. I called UMD today to ask if there is anything my son needs to do in order to push the LOR out from Naviance to MD, and the student answering the phone said that it will all take care of itself. I am not so confident of this, but not sure what else to do at this point. My fear is that since MD has marked his file as complete, their system will not be looking to add info to his file. Unfortunately, the second LOR-writer is the one who has known him since a 9th grade EC, taught him AP physics for two years, and accompanied him to quiz bowl nationals…oh well, can’t change things now.

Thanks for all the info on passport renewal. Saves me from googling.

Very shocking & sad news about Fallen Chemist: a huge loss to the Tulane community.

@NerdMom88 …quite a few mental health days here. There are certain days where she knows she will get more done at home than at school. If nothing major is being missed (tests, projects, etc.) then why not? She can get a few extra hours sleep and be much more productive at home.

D made the big decision yesterday to “let the clock tick” on her Texas A&M decision for housing at least. It’s a 300 refundable deposit to “get in line” for on campus housing.

She said “if my # 1 school doesn’t work out, I’d rather be at Bama than A&M—don’t send the $$.”

Feels soooo weird!

@fallenchemist will me missed dearly!

Shocked and sad to hear Fallen Chemist’s passing. RIP.

@carachel2 – I’m normally more in favor of mental health days than she is, but I don’t think it’s going to happen this year. She’ll be having surgery later this month so we’re both trying to stay on top of things to minimize the homework issues / potential grade slippage afterward, and in the spring she’s determined to have fewer than six days off. In her HS, seniors with < 6 days absence in a semester can forego their finals (if their overall grade is up to par.) She’s actually kind of pissed that surgery will knock her out of the running this semester.

@NerdMom88 We are carefully keeping track of days off for the same reason. It’s going to be really tight for D with visit next semester and she needs to leave school early to start her summer program.

@CT1417 In the few portals where my D has applied and the application was noted as complete a 2nd LOR came through last week and is reflected as received for the application. YMMV with UMd.

@NerdMom88 … Same here! It’s broken down even further for those who are down to the wire: you can miss 3 A days and 3 Bdays and still be exempt from finals. If you miss 4 A days you have to take the final, etc.

She keeps track on her calendar lol!!!

College visits are a special kind of excuses and don’t count towards the absence/finals count.
