@carachel2 – at D’s HS all absences count, even ones required by a class!
@CT1417 IIRC, UMD only requires 1 LOR so they mark the file complete as soon as they receive it, but they will add any additional ones to the file if received later. This happened to D and they confirmed that though the portal showed only 1, both were received.
Thank you @itsgettingreal17. That is good news, especially after GT who could not do anything about the fact that Naviance sent the wrong LOR. My son will be happy to hear that!
@Dolemite–I would have thought the same, but given that MD is not on CA and my earlier experience with a public university, I didn’t want to make any assumptions.
@ailinsh1 I feel your pain. I could have wrote the following word for word:
I was nagging my D again this morning to please ask them again if they understand how to upload the LOR to the common app. But this is very uncomfortable for my D.
So saddened by the news of @fallenchemist 's passing. His help was incredibly valuable during D15’s college application and decision process. A huge loss to the Tulane & CC communities.
@fallenchemist and I had a great debate on the merits of 3+2 engineering programs several months ago. We had opposite but equally adamant views on the subject. It was a very informative discussion for any onlookers and I’m so glad I had a chance to interact with such an intelligent guy. He will really be missed.
Is anyone applying for outside scholarships? Care to share?
We were considering the Khan Academy one but missed the deadline.
@nw2this We will definitely be applying for outside scholarships. Nothing specific targeted yet. I think we have a little breathing room on the deadlines so I’m hoping to give my son a month or two off before cracking the whip again.
You can check with your high school’s NHS coordinator if the NHS scholarship still exists.
@nw2this I am just starting to create a list of outside scholarships. D will be applying for as many as possible that do not have to be applied to direct costs with the hope of building up some extra funds. The deadlines are indeed later so it’s not a priority, but I’m getting on it now.
Outside scholarships: D17 has a couple of guaranteed good-sized institutional scholarships (and a good shot at a couple others), so we’re not really worried about outside money for her. For D19, on the other hand, we’re going to be hunting pretty intensely…
Haven’t even thought about outside scholarships yet. I really don’t see D writing more essays :))
UMD app is very clunky on the recommender side FYI
Only 1 of D’s recommendation letters has been uploaded to UMD. She needs 2 because she’s homeschooled. The prof has been reminded and reminded. We may punt and have her MUN advisor upload an already-written rec.
@itsgettingreal17 – May I ask how UMD confirmed that although the portal showed only 1 LoR, both were received. Did you call them? We are possibly in the same situation. thanks much!!
Not looking at any Outside scholarships.
It seems that S17 wants to declare “Done already!” with college apps.
After all, our state flagship(s) are difficult to beat.
Frustrated, I suggested we add back one no fee, no supplement school that had come off the list. Done! So we are at 7 applied, Lucky 7 $-) $-) :))
Off to more research on no fee, no supplement schools. :-/
Columbia sent a thick book today. Is this a no fee, no supplement school? :))
@stlarenas - I’m sorry you’re going through this too. And to make it worse, now one of her teachers emailed her to say, “I submitted everything!” But Naviance only shows him having submitted to UDel, not UMD. Common App shows his submission under all her schools. UMD still shows online or offline recommendations not received. Ack! UMD is annoying because you can apparently either upload LOR directly to them via their portal interface, or can send them via Naviance, or can mail them in. I think anything external to their system is “offline”, since the transcript and counselor LOR were sent via Naviance and show as being received under “offline transcript received”, and “offline counselor recommendation received”. It is worrisome that Naviance doesn’t show him submitting for MD and MD’s portal doesn’t show them receiving anything either. If he’d submitted directly to MD, via their portal, it should pop up automatically, correct? I’d feel better if Naviance showed him submitting it but MD didn’t have it marked yet; that would be understandable. Right now we’re sort of in weird limbo. He says he did it. No way to confirm it. And this dear teachers, is why WE DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE DEADLINE! Oy. I need chocolate … and thankfully it’s Halloween ;-).
@CA1543 Emailed them. They are very responsive via email.
One school has a scholarship for DECA participants. If you were in DECA for 4 years you can write an essay and hope to be offered 5k. It’s the least they can do, because he won’t get any merit $ there, so it’s like 67K COA, Yikes. Hey, don’t laugh, 62 is better then 67 right? :((
Saw this on the Class of 2016 board and thought it might be appropriate! I’m not sure who the credits go to but @madredos posted it so I’ll tag that person and ?? don’t know who else?
'Twas the night before EA and all through the house
Every finger was whirring, attached to a mouse.
The LOR uploads were assigned with great care
In hopes that the buzzwords all would be there.
Common app edits were all done in red,
While parents on CC were shaking their heads.
DD and DS had snuck off for a nap,
Dreaming of finishing that one late night app.
500 posts later, there arose such a chatter
Which ECs are great and which ones don’t much matter?
Can College Board get scores sent in a flash
Or are all of our hopes about to be dashed?
Supplemental essays were ready to go
And short answer questions written just so
Closets were brimming with fun college gear
Waiting for when acceptances might just appear.
Showing off talents is quite a great trick
With so little space you have to think quick
What is important and what will seem lame?
Did you remember to change the school name???
Now AP, now IB, now DE and GC
On EA, on RD, on NMF and CC
So many acronyms, stay on the ball
How on earth does one remember them all?
And just as we thought we were getting by
A new slew of paperwork fell out of the sky.
Now it is FAFSA and CSS too
To see how much money will be leaving you.
The formula straightforward and fairly aloof
Watching your money disappear in a poof!
Too bad if you are financially sound,
Better to not have much dough lying around.
Blood sweat and tears on the forms you must put,
All of your retirement plans totally kaput.
Too late now, there is no looking back.
Hey wait – did DD just wake up for a snack?
Her eyes, how they twinkle, her dimples how merry.
Is that a transcript in her hand she does carry?
Did she finish the SAAR? Is it ready to go?
The tears from my eyes they are starting to flow.
My credit card, it is time to unsheathe.
Oh – look at that baby picture tucked underneath.
Back to the business at hand we must get,
Finally it might just be time to submit.
Check 3 more times, in spite of myself,
Wishing again for a fairy grammar elf.
With a wink of her eye and a nod of her head,
My kid has come to the moment I think I most dread.
She spoke not a word but went straight to her work.
Submit, submit, submit - then she turned with a jerk.
“Do you think this is it? Do you really suppose?”
And then in that instant we both simply froze.
We looked at the clock and we felt quite blissful.
Then we looked at each other and were a little bit wistful.
Hours spent on the Common App site,
Would hopefully bring mail that soon would excite.
@carachel2 – Love it!!
Tulane parent here (S14); very sad indeed regarding FallenChemist. He was a fabulous resource and judicious advocate for the school.
He will be missed ^:)^
