@Mom2aphysicsgeek Email or handwritten notes? D did email. She received great responses, so I think it’s ok.
@mamaedefamilia OMG, I didn’t know you were spying on me refreshing the LOR page over and over since this morning!
@hadmeathello Mine would work hard regardless as well. She’s pretty hard on herself academically. Real work, she’s worked all 4 years of high school (I insisted…to break the entitled only child mentality that I saw developing). Lots of lessons learned there. So only internships in college.
My S has applied to 10 schools. He has 1 more to apply for at this point. 7 of them are ED but none are restrictive. He has received 2 accepts in the first 2 weeks and then nothing since. I have been helping/harping on him throughout the process. He applied to our state school 7 miles away and 10 OOS schools. The state school accepted him in 4 days and one of the “free application” schools (Baylor) accepted him in 2 weeks with a nice merit scholarship. He doesn’t want to go to either but we will see as his other schools make decisions.
This process is going to give me an ulcer.
For those applying to elites and similar, do your kids plan to accept a wait list position if offered?
S’s email account is ablaze tonight. He’s getting reminder emails every couple of minutes. Ridiculous, really.
Will this happen again with the Jan 1 deadlines?
@carachel2 — just want to clear up any confusion I may have caused. That was older son who received the large envelope from Tulane a few days after reading this decision on their portal. (Can’t recall the portal name—Gibson maybe.)
He did not enroll there, but I just mentioned the merit award here as he was not the student I would have expected to receive merit money. Once I started listening, I realized that Tulane does offer attractive merit awards (with low threshold to retain the award) to high test score applicants. So be sure to open the mail even if admission decision is already known!
I have to spend some time tonight catching up. You people are moving quickly!
@hadmeathello I just re-read the Terms of Service. I understand why and how people can get into hot water, but I still don’t understand the “jail” metaphor. Are there pre-determined consequences for specific actions? Would a second-time offender be treated differently? How are users “jailed” if they are still posting? Does that mean they are more closely monitored? And how does one get out of “jail”?
Maybe I should take this question to a more generic forum. Sorry for the diversion…
@NerdMom88 Talking extensively about moderation is a big no-no. :))
@littleray – are you trying to jinx things here with talk of WL…as I sit here hoping my son will file his two 11/1 apps tonight, including the supposedly important SCEA one!!!
WL management, a subject I hope none of us has to immerse ourselves in…You can look up WL movement on the CDS for each school and then make an informed decision. It depends on how you define elite, but not much movement off the WL at the ‘Top whatever #’ of schools.
I have an open mind on the subject, but will leave that decision to my son.
I think I may have posted this before, but the students in our HS run a FB page where they post their decisions. A few years back, one girl posted that she would be attending School A. Early May, she cleared WL for school B, and enthusiastically posted that she would be attending school B. Yes, she then cleared WL at yet another school, so finally and happily posted that she would be attending Michigan, a school she had wanted to attend all along. She had a good sense of humor about it on the FB page, and ended up attending the school she really wanted to attend. Not everyone has the constitution to weather the volatility.
re: the bars
Someone else has said it but, “The first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club…”
@hadmeathello – I don’t understand the movie references…but want to heed @Dave_N’s warning. Perhaps I need to message you.
Also don’t understand the streaker reference (other than the 1970s fad).
Perhaps skimming isn’t working for me today.
Almost every app submitted has been Early Action. I suspect a few of them will get kicked over to Regular Decision. Basically the same as Waitlisted in my book.
@CT1417 I’m a Cub fan. I don’t believe in jinxes.
No, I was just curious for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I don’t believe any of Ds schools have wait lists, or if they do, that she will be on one. If she is, it probably means she is not a strong enough candidate for the big MAC we are after.
Genuine curiosity is all. I imagine it would be tough, and if it happens I will encourage her to run, don’t walk.
@littleray – agree that merit aid will not be offered to anyone clearing the WL.
Being full pay can tip the scales at some schools when clearing the WL b/c the schools have mostly used up their FA budgets. Not all schools, and not all the time, but schools can become need aware when working the WL. They want to finish the process quickly, so the student who does not need to consider a FA offer is one who can say yes more quickly.
If you are curious, you can google ‘name of college common data set’ and go to section C2 to see how many were admitted from the WL.
@littleray That’s a tough one. We need lots of financial aid. I heard many need-blind schools turn to need-aware for the waitlisted kids. So I will allow her to be on the wait list but will tell her not to keep her hopes up.
@STEM2017 Maybe a ‘drive-by posting’ would have been a better analogy by @hadmeathello
We haven’t considered the waitlist possibility, but I think the answer is yes, we would take a waitlist position since there is a long distance between the elites and the next schools on her list in terms of desirability. But we wouldn’t hold our breath either. We would put a housing deposit down somewhere.
@carachel2 I love your skin in the game montage!
It’s true their contribution is all of the hard work they put in, it certainly is a lot different then when we went to school. We actually were allowed to be kids after school!
@STEM2017 yes, the emails are out of control! They have been for the past few days too. It probably will happen with every deadline for sure.
RE Waitlisting: Yes, D2 would take a waitlist position at the one school to which she has not already received an acceptance. She’d hate it, but she’d do it.
