Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@suzy100 My GC told me that the predicted cutoff for semifinalist this year in PA is 217 via Collegeboard… would like to see that number go down, however! I am satisfied with being commended, considering that I didn’t study until the night before (oops) and was focusing more on the ACT. Best of luck to all PSAT-takers!

College Board is telling GCs predicted state cut offs??

It looks like last year’s cut for PA was 218, so if what this GC says is true, PA’s predicted (by CB??) cut went down one point. Very interesting.

I think there must be a misunderstanding. I don’t think it’s Collegeboard that sets the cutoff, is it? Isn’t that the National Merit Corporation? In any event, that cutoff number has never been announced this early. I’m thinking @Benji3025’s GC is mistaken.

Well knock me over with a feather…the school just put the new PSAT into Naviance. I was sure we’d have to wait until the 12th to see S’s score. 760 math, 730 erw, 222 SI. Hopefully the Texas SI cutoff doesn’t go up too much from last year’s 220!

@suzy100 Likely GC is mistaken… When do semifinalist packets and commendation letters normally come out? Next fall I presume?

Found out DS scored a 219 in KY. KY was 215 last year. I am telling myself he should be fine. KY cut-off could go up 1, 2 maybe even 3 points. But 5? No way right?

Trying to be chill about this. Actually in better shape now with reasonably good news. DS didn’t want to do prep. Couldn’t even get him to do a practice test (he did take as a sophomore). Then he came home after the test with some anxiety because on the math he was checking his answers and discovered he hadn’t answered several questions. Had to rush and guess at least a couple answers because he didn’t have time. I so wanted to say “so you think maybe you should have done a little prep now”? But didn’t. Didn’t want him anymore stressed about it then he would be on his own.

So his math score actually did go down a bit from last year, but r/w score went up more, pushing up his SI 4 points. Guess it is all good if it ends well. Wish there was a way to speed up the process so there is certainty.

His GCs were helpful. I reached out to one last night and asked her to put us out of our misery, and they helped us out. Got on to look last night for us and let us know 1440. Then showed DS his report this morning.

I have been gone from this board for so long… hoping to get back into the groove. We came home from vacation on August 6th to find that a second floor toilet supply line had broken and flooded most of our house. We have been in a rental and they are VERY SLOWLY rebuilding our house.

Anyway, I had kind of forgotten about PSAT scores, so I will have to look on college board. December 12th?

Also, starting to try to figure out where S18 should apply, and he is starting to think about it too, so I may be back to start asking for ideas! Not even going to try to catch up on the posts, lol. I have to jump right in!

@Benji3025, yes, it will be in the fall. Typically there is a thread here that posters contribute to so that we can figure out each state’s cut off score before NMC makes the official announcement. Fingers crossed for you! Either way, it’s a terrific score.

@wrights1994, I’m so sorry to hear about your house! That had to have been awful. It’s nice to see you here - I remember you from the Parents of 2015 thread.

Okay, I was able to login to Naviance and was SHOCKED to see D18’s score. 1470 with a 740 R&W and 730 Math. We are in PA where the cutoff was 218 last year. Is there reason to be hopeful? Good luck to all!

@Kayak3, by my calculations that’s an SI of 221. Congratulations to your D!

Hello all I’m new to CC. I have a daughter for c/o 2018. We are in Fl. Would love some advice on great SAT/ACTprep courses that you thought was worth the cost. Our plan is to take it in spring before all the AP and AICE exams in May. My D is a good student but not the type that can self study for this type of test.

SI = EBRW / 5 + Math / 10 = 221

Welcome back @wrights1994, really sorry to hear about your house & I hope the rebuild is coming along nicely. I’m another parent from the Class of 2015 thread going through it again with D18, only this time I’m well prepared for it thanks to all I learned from the parents of 2015!

Just my sons numbers just showed up on his infinite campus account. Not making the Jersey cut but his scores are a very good omen for the pending SAT results which he took on December 3rd

Thank you! Do you think the 221 will be a safe enough score? I’m guessing it should at very least be Commended so I’m relieved! Btw, how annoying that they make you wait! No reason for that.

You have a good reason to he hopeful @Kayak3 - a 221 SI is a great score and you have a 3-point buffer over last year’s cutoff.

I am just now joining the 2018 group as I have been spending a lot of time on the 2017 group but things are quiet for a couple of weeks!

I checked his CollegeBoard portal and his PSAT from last spring is the only score showing up. Is Naviance getting it before CollegeBoard does? I do not have his Naviance login info.

@jpc763, some school GCs are putting the new PSAT data into their Naviance database. My S’s score showed up there yesterday afternoon. It’s up to the individual schools to decide when to put the scores in Naviance though.

Woot! Woot! Way to go Kayac’s DC’18!

If we had to wait for our GC’s to add the score to Naviance my S18 would be graduating by now. Our school takes forever to update Naviance. It does stink that we are at their mercy. What’s 5 more days?
