@RoonilWazlib99 - you are correct re the NCAA rule that coaches cannot make recruiting calls until the summer after junior year, but there is an exception for Service Academies. DD’18 received a call from the coach at one of the Academies. She has gotten letters and emails from other coaches, but only one phone call.
Well, something cheered me up today! Princeton’s NPC gave us an EFC of $30! That’s THIRTY with no K!
Now, obviously I’m convinced that’s where D should go.
@Aida and everyone else who brought up AP’s – thanks! I didn’t even think about that - derp de derp…
@traveler98, interesting there’s a date not yet announced. But I don’t think August would work if he does the year abroad.
@odannyboySF, uggh, I hope he doesn’t have to take subject tests, but I’ll need to look into it.
@MACmiracle, Case Western has the rep for being the most stalker-ish of 2017 kids. S18 hasn’t gotten much since he knew not to check the “send me info” box on ACT or SAT, but a few pieces are dribbling in.
The August SAT date is on the CB website, but it’s in the 2017-2018 test date section not the 2016-2017 section. All the current school year stuff is at the top of the test date page but next year’s is lower down in its own table.
@snoozn @MACmiracle yes, Case has sent a lot of email/snail mail but S17 & H liked what they saw on their visit (H took him so I haven’t been to campus). The 7 story maker space building was impressive. S was happy to get EA with merit so he knows he has a solid choice while he waits for RD.
Many of the top schools require subject tests, but even there it is mixed. A few say ACT or SAT and subject. Princeton and Harvard say something about if cost is an issue don’t worry (S finished all his testing in 11th grade so I didn’t look too closely). MIT and Cal Tech say Math 2.
Just realized that the SAT is THIS WEEKEND…I registered D18 a while back…only D18 has NCA High School Nationals this weekend. I am so made at myself that we failed to make the connection on the conflict. I had SAT down on my calendar for Jan 28…UUUGGGHHH. She has another cheer comp on March 11 in New Orleans so that date is out too. Rescheduled her for May 6th…so annoyed at myself.
@suzy100 I got it straight from this US News article: http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2016-10-24/what-happens-to-students-who-back-out-of-early-decision-offers
Although declining ED for financial reasons is probably very different than just “Nah, I don’t want to go there any more.”
^^Right, I was addressing the issue of turning down ED for financial reasons. I do find this odd: “And Fretwell says she’d likely also share the names of students who were admitted via early decision, but who are not attending for financial aid and other reasons.” That seems to be inappropriate.
@MACmiracle, you’re done!
@labegg, that’s totally something I would do. There’s a February ACT date if that would work better.
Yeah, that seems…odd at best, inappropriate at worst.
@odannyboySF @suzy100 , The ED question came up at a visit during an info session with an Admissions Counselor. This was at an elite college. She more or less “warned” the audience not to apply ED unless it’s literally the only school for you and that if you do and back out, the info will be shared with other schools.
I guess I should correct that since I’m not sure which schools qualify as elite, but it was a non-Ivy school with a very low acceptance rate.
That seems crummy to me if they permit you to decline the ED acceptance if the the FA is inadequate.
Maybe that’s a special circumstance, @suzy100 ? One would hope!
@suzy100 D18 is already registered for the February ACT! Maybe we won’t even need the SAT option! (Ha, not likely).
Yes. It is this Saturday. Midterms this week and musical auditions. So not sure if we can get any practice in.
No time in May, so might have to schedule another SAT in fall.
How important, would you say, are SAT subject tests? D will take the Math 2 but is it okay if she skips science and only has one SAT Subject test as a STEM applicant?
Right now she plans to major in Statistics but could go back to favoring Engineering as a major. It seems she missed the opportunity to take the subject tests when she completed the related courses and now would have to self-study. I’m wondering whether it’s really worth the time/energy on top of everything else this year.
@Kayak3 my D didn’t apply to any schools that required subject tests.
So you will have to check if and what subject tests a school requires.
Thank you, @mommdc . I guess I should have been more specific. Many colleges say “recommended but not required” and I’m wondering if anyone knows if it really will hurt you not to submit at those colleges. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a panel of Admissions Officers ready and willing to answer our questions on this forum?
Piping up to say the answer/explanation thing bugged me about the PSAT also - but all you have to do is - doh - click on the question number and it pops right up.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we had a panel of Admissions Officers ready and willing to answer our questions on this forum?”
Some of the specific college forums do have AOs that regularly answer questions. UPitt and UChicago are two.
