The Dean from UVA also makes an appearance, as does MITChris.
As for recommended versus required - my older son (HS 2013) treated recommended as if it were required when he was applying to schools. No idea if it made a difference or not. Just his approach.
@dadotwoboys I’ve read that for competitive schools, this is good (read: must do) advice.
Anyone else already tired/frustrated about being in “wait mode?” DS18 had his interview for the NSLI-Y last Saturday and we won’t hear anything back until late March/early April. He applied 1st choice China, 2nd choice Korea. From what I can gather, he has a 50/50 chance. He’s also got 221 on the PSAT in TX and it looks like the scores are shifting upward so I’m thinking he’s got a 50/50 chance there too. Won’t know anything more until September…
I’m a planner, and this is driving me crazy! Other summer programs will have application due dates before we hear back from NSLI-Y and it would be helpful to know if DS18 will be available to drive DS20 to summer programs. His making the cut for NM will seriously impact our budget. I just wish these things didn’t take so long!
Anyone got a spare crystal ball???
@3scoutsmom - what makes you think that Selection Index score cut offs are going up in TX? Just curious, and I haven’t read back through all of the posts, in case it has already been discussed here.
Art at Compass posted a few days ago on his blog that after reviewing a large amount of new data that he feel the commended score will certainly raise and is not as certain as he was before that TX will not go above 221.
@3scoutsmom Thank you! I am from TX, as well. May I send you a PM to ask what schools you are looking at?
Sure! @crazy4info Love to talk about colleges:-)
S takes his first (hopefully only) SAT this Saturday. I think I’m more of a wreck than he is!
good luck to him @DiotimaDM! Our D is taking hers for the first time Saturday as well. She’s also going to try the ACT in February to see how she does on each of them. My S16 took SAT’s in June of jr. year and Oct. of senior year, and even without additional prep he did much better the 2nd time. So, we’ll see how D18 does on her first round.
Stopping by from the 2018 thread. Khan Academy added another SAT practice test if your kids want extra practice before the big day. I heard its the October SAT so that might not be helpful to some tho.
@MA2012, Case is on S’s list of schools to look at. D17 and I went to a local event and she really liked the presentation. She’d love to see the Maker Space. Case deferred her to RD but I’m expecting much. It was her reachiest school. I guess I need to take a look at subject test req’s. I doubt he’ll apply to any school much more selective than Case, but it will be so much fun to dig through 30 websites to find out for sure!
No need to dig through individual websites. Common app has a chart:

DD’18 is sitting for the SAT on Saturday. Sharpening No 2 pencils and crossing fingers!
Good luck to all the SAT takers tomorrow.
Don’t forget extra batteries for the calculator.
Yes, much luck to all of the kids taking the SAT tomorrow!
Best wishes for everyone taking the SAT tomorrow!
Ugh, I don’t know how to get extra batteries for a calculator.
All week I’ve been dealing with an (irrational?) fear about the photo we uploaded not being good enough.
I’m going to run out and buy a pack of those whole grain breakfast biscuits tonight. DH, who never worries about anything, happened to remind me that D gets hypoglycemic episodes. I haven’t seen one in a while do I didn’t think about it and prepare.
I also don’t know if she has any idea what an SAT essay prompt looks like. She’s been busy practicing math to increase her speed and we kind of forgot everything else.
@MACmiracle If you dont know how to get an extra battery for your calc you prob have one that you can charge since the other ones are ran by AA batteries, so just make sure you charge it tonight.
