Oh, I agree with everything you’ve said here, @1518mom. My point I guess was that if the school seems right in all other ways except for one bad visit, maybe a revisit should be considered.
So I just got an email from one of the recruiters at University of New Mexico. He says a gap year is fine, no problem.
The previous answer was from whoever answered the phone at the admissions number, and the person sounded young enough to have been a student intern.
I wonder who’s right…?
^Ask them in writing.
The recruiter’s email counts as writing, right? The recruiter is traveling at the mo, giving presentations here in CA, but too far away for me to go see him. When he’s back at his desk, I’ll talk to him again.
I’d ask the highest level person in the admissions office. I don’t know if that’s the recruiter or someone else.
Agreed. I would get it in writing. It shouldn’t be difficult to get that.
Good idea, 1518mom.

The CDS says that enrollment can be deferred (page 11, 12) but not for how long and if that includes scholarship recipients (NMF scholarship).
AP exams start in 48 hours! How are your kids doing?
D has five and so far she’s doing okay. She feels pretty prepared for three; Biology and World History not so much, but they are both the second week. She will be SO relieved when these tests are over!
S18 has 2. They had a mock test last weekend and he got a 4 on the English which is what we are aiming for. That gets him 6 hours at the schools he’s looking at and then he won’t need the English AP test next year. APUSH also had a mock but afterwards the teacher said she won’t be grading it?! What use it that?! Ugh.
So he’s comfortable with English but it sure would help to know how he’s looking for APUSH going in. He needs a 4 on that one as well. APUSH is up first on Friday.
D has 4, 2 each week which is nice - Lit, Gov, Bio and Stats. I think she’s worried about Gov, since she took that first semester.
DS18 has Psychology this Monday then Physics C Mech and E&M next Monday, Calculus BC on Tuesday and English Language on Wednesday. He feels well prepared for all of them. DS20 had Comp Sci this week and Human Geo next week, I’m a little worried about Human Geo.
I would say I’d be glad when AP are over but then it’s on to finals…
S has 4 total, 3 this week and 1 next week. Psych on Monday and Physics 1 on Tuesday so that won’t be much fun. At least Psych is short. APUSH Friday and US Subject test bright and early Sat morning.
@3scoutsmom do your kids have finals in their AP classes, in addition to the AP exam? My D’s only final is in pre-Calc.
@keepmecruisin Yes, Psych seems relatively easy, so it’s a great one to start with.
Last year my D did the APUSH/USH subject test in tandem like that and it worked out well. She’s doing the same this year with Bio: subject test on Sat, AP test on Monday.
I caught my D doing SAT Test Prep UNPROMPTED so I guess the college tours finally got to her! :x
AP Chem and APUSH this week. Lang and Calc BC next week. Capstone is a thesis and a presentation and those are already done. That class has become, essentially, a study hall at this point, which is helpful. He just left for an afternoon of studying at a local coffee shop.
S doesn’t have any the first week. Second week, it’s AP Bio, AP Micro and AP Lang.
D has 1 AP and 1 IB test this year. Calc AB a week from Tuesday and IB Spanish sometime after that, I think? I actually have no idea when that one is. She has mostly seemed pretty relaxed about them, she asked me this week what score she “had” to get on AP Calc. I told her it really depended on the school, but honestly she should just try for the best she could do and whatever she gets is fine. I think if she knew she needed a 4 or really a 5 she’d be so demoralized she’d just give up on the whole thing. As it is, she’s working, studying, and planning to give it her best shot. I’d be pretty thrilled with a 3 honestly, math tests and her just don’t get along too well these days. Which is fine, I don’t see her testing out of any Calc or really wanting to test forward in math at the college level anyway, this class has kicked her a$$ this year.
She does, however, need to do decently on the Spanish I think, for her IB diploma, but I don’t really know the details on that either. I DO know that she is very much looking forward to being DONE with Spanish at the end of this year! ;))
D18 has end-of-course US History on Monday, APUSH Friday, SAT IIs next Saturday, then AP Bio, Lang and Calc AB the following week.
I have set up a study area in my bedroom, since S19 is building a project all over the house! I have also loaded up the Starbucks app for study sessions with friends.
D18 has 3 AP’s - thankfully spread out which really helps. All finals for the AP classes complete this week. Will be nice to be largely finished with these classes in a week or two. Good luck to all!!!
