Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Hello everyone. S is taking the SAT II on Saturday and I am wondering if I use a free score report to send to NMSC, will the SAT I score be sent as well? It didn’t occur to me to send the report when he originally to the SAT I so if this will work I can save a few dollars. Would there be any disadvantage to them seeing his SAT II scores if they end up being poor, or do you think they are irrelevant? Thanks.

@suzy100 D18 not NMF but FSU looks like a bargain for OOS with the OOS tuition waiver, resulting in really low instate tuition ($18k COA). Pretty decent school and suprised it does not get alot more love here on CC.

Pretty excited about this news from Florida - will follow it closely.

My California daughter thinks she will be eaten by an alligator if she goes to Florida, but she laughed when I told her how OOS parents always ask about earthquake safety when they tour California schools. This is why it’s good to experience different parts of the country / world!

Thank you @my2caligirls - we will look into that! I’m afraid my D might think Florida is too far away.

D has AP Bio, English Language, French, and European History tests coming up. I have no idea when her tests are - thankfully she keeps up with all of that. Her school does not require them to take finals in AP classes, so she’s essentially finished with school next week, as she only has one non-AP class (honors Econ).

LOL about the gators. Honestly, the lightning is much scarier. And neither are as scary as those earthquakes and mudslides.

The Benaquisto, as I understand it, can be used at UF, FSU, USF, UCF, New College (if you want a small, intellectual school experience) and U Miami (worth COA at a state school).

I think I may have said this before, but I am definitely of mixed emotions on opening it up to OOS. It’ll broaden the academic profile of the state schools by attracting even more academic talent. But UF in particular has already seen a big decrease in the acceptance rate over the past few years and this can only make it even more competitive. The guidance counselor at S’18 HS indicated that they have seen a decline in the number of acceptances over the past few years. And that the other schools have become harder to get into. Probably not too much of an issue for NMF students from FL, but it will likely impact high achieving students who are not NMF.

My guess is that it will keep more NMFs at home though.

GATOR CHOMP! GATOR CHOMP!

Well Parents of the Class of 2018 . . . only 365 days until college decision deadlines! Sure it will come and go faster than imagined. :)>-

Yeah. Did I mention there is a lot of school spirit at UF?

@suzy100 , thanks for the Florida OOS NMF update. I have some of the same questions as you. It will be interesting to see how many OOS NMFs a school like UF will get, and how funding may restrict how many NMFs UF can accept. I have some concerns about a scholarship program tied so closely to the annual funding whims of a state legislature. Not sure my S18 is a fit for UF or FSU, but we are definitely going to check out those two and Miami!

“I have some concerns about a scholarship program tied so closely to the annual funding whims of a state legislature.” Yes, I have exactly the same concerns.

Seems like Florida could get swamped with applicants.

:-q :))

@my2caligirls It’s going to be a wild ride for the next year. I wish everyone the best of luck with all their choices.

It isn’t hard to imagine UF eclipsing Oklahoma and Alabama in drawing NMFs if they go though with these changes.

DS has 1 of his AP exams this Friday AM, then 1 every morning Monday through Thursday next week. Then awards ceremony during the school next Friday and regional track meet next Saturday. Glad he has more energy than I do!

As of today, our kids are officially “at bat”. Here we go…!

I was thinking the same thing, @LOUKYDAD. If UF really is going to be full ride plus, it would be a very appealing option for NMFs. What could OU and Alabama offer that UF couldn’t? (Other than proximity to home, if that is a factor.) Better Honors programs maybe? I’m trying not to get too excited about this until details are finalized, but it’s definitely been a topic of conversation at our house this weekend. I find this fascinating, especially since UK appears to be implementing the opposite tactics, by scaling back their merit awards. I know, different states, different demographics, different needs.

I sincerely hope my D has decided where to go well before May 1 of next year. Did you guys see all of the posts with kids torn between school A and school B right up to the last minute? YIKES.

@suzy100 YES, and I think I acquired a few new gray hairs on their behalf! :-SS

I head up a family of planners. D18 has made her choice already (assuming she gets in!), and we are already discussing college visit strategy with S20.

But some of those choices were unreal, like should I go to “Stanford, Princeton or Yale?” “ND or Princeton?” Or “MIT or fill-in the blank”?

I don’t think my D has the foggiest clue where she REALLY wants to go in the Fall of 2018. Our family should be so lucky as the students here on CC.

D is taking the SAT for the 1st time this Saturday. OY!
