@gclsports@kassh4 We are still waiting from the April 19 Ohio state testing. Our guidance counselor said we’d get paper scores in the mail first, which would then be online. Apparently, at least here, it’s different for the state testing.
Why expunge a test score if you have a higher one? Do we think ad comms are seriously sitting around going, “Gee we better not accept Suzy because she had one crappy test day?” Do you get extra points for scoring perfect the first time? (because there are maybe 1 in a thousand kids that score perfect the first time sans test prep). A crap test score followed by a good test score could just as easily tell ad comm that Suzy knows how to recover from a bad result. The problem is that we started prepping for test that were initially designed to measure potential. All they measure now is the ability to prep.
Our DD’18 arrived at school Friday and was presented with a form to fill out re the English AP. it noted that there was a disturbance during the exam and she would be given the option of a retake on May 17th. (She later told me that the 8th graders were rehearsing their graduation concert in the room next store for two hours!) She opted NOT to retake.
Class of '17 graduated this morning - - does that makes our kids the Seniors now?
Prom last night, D18 probably has 2 exams and 2 projects over next 1.5 weeks. I’ll give her a couple of weeks before I start nagging about college choices/essays. She will need to see the results of her SAT IIs and AP exams before she finalizes her list.
@msatoor Dual credit typically means that the student has taken college-level courses, often at a local community college, and will earn credit for both a high school class and a college class.
My S, for example, took HIST 101, 102, and 103 at a community college. These classes fulfilled his US History and World History requirements at the high school level while also giving him 9 units of college credit for the same courses, credits that will eventually transfer to the university he plans to attend.
@msatoor you really need to be careful when looking at DE credit not all schools will accept all credit and even if the school accepts it might not be accepted for your degree. I found this out with my DD16. She started college with 100 credit hours (DE, AP and CLEP) OU stated that they would accept unlimited numbers of credits but we found out that for her degree there was a limit a max of 23 credits from AP/CLEP and a max total of 46 AP/CLEP/DE. We also found out that many of her credits would only count toward “elective credit” and she doesn’t really need any more elective credits. SHe was able to use a good bit of DE/AP/CLEP credit and has freed up time to work on a minor and explore other classes of interest but it was has great as it sounded at first.
This raises a question…
One of my D’s safety schools, with rolling admissions, opens their app July 1. It’s a very simple app, with no rec letters needed, but it does require a transcript. D is considering sending that app in asap, but how does that work with the transcript? Are GCs generally expected to be available over the summer for such duties? What is the etiquette here? I don’t want D to ask her GC if they generally aren’t expected to work over the summer. It’s not a huge rush to get the app in, but if it makes sense, why not?
@ShrimpBurrito One of my D18’s tasks this week is to find out the answer to this question, and also get a copy of the transcript sent to us in case of errors.
Our high school opens in the middle of August. My D asked for LORs at the end of junior year, applied in early August, sent test scores, the transcript was the last thing submitted.
@snowfairy137 Meteorology, but I would assume many degrees will have some restrictions like x number of credits must be upper level (3000+), x number of courses must be completed at that university…
For DS18 we are almost certain that he will attend a TX state school (likely UTD) so I researched the restrictions he’ll likely face. His plan is to take as many AP’s as he can that will replace required core classes and to mostly take DE classe that are not offered as AP’s but are required core classes. In our case AP’s are cheaper than DE classes and AP’s are ‘weighted’ so they bump his GPA where DE classes are not factored into GPA. The one exception is American History, this is a huge time suck of an AP class at our school and DS chose to take two DE history classes to fill this high school requirements instead of the AP class.
Physics C Mechanical = PHYS 2325 + 2125 (4) Physics C Electrical = PHYS 2326+ 2126 (4) Psychology = PSY 2301 (4)
Statistics = STAT 1342 (4)
World History (4) = N/A
American Government = GOVT 2305 (3)
Economics = ECON 2301 (4)
AP Classes with (x) after are known scores
UTD Classes with (x) are the minimum to get credit
Classes in BOLD are taken but waiting for scores
other classes will be taken next year
Community College DE
ITSE 2321 grade A = ? (elective?)
HIST 1301 grade A = HIST 1301
HIST 1302 grade A = HIST 1302
PHIL 1301 grade A = PHIL 1301
MUSI 1306 Fall 2017 = MUSI 1306
Texas GOVT 2306 Spring 2018 = GOVT 2306
He chose to take AP World History for the grade waiting even though UTD doesn’t award credit for it.
If things go as planned he’ll have 15 DE credits and 63 DE credits 78 credits total
BUT
about 15-20 of those credits will only be counted as “elective credits” since he’ll be working on a minor so he really doesn’t need additional elective credit. For example even though UTD gives credit for Physics 1 and 2 they are not required for his major (comp sci) even as a core requirement, even though they give credit for some Chinese classes (his minor) the basic Chinese class are not required for the minor.
