Howdy! We’re pretty new to this forum. But DD is class of 2018 and looks to be an academic admit to Texas A&M (if the folks below her will quit changing high schools mid-year and jeopardizing her top 25% class status 19/101 LOL). A&M is tops on her list. Although with a 33 ACT and 40 semester hours of dual credit, she is also looking at some other good schools as well.
Since everyone is dealing with AP reflections I’ll just say DD couldn’t take her AP Physics test due to a schedule conflict. It likely won’t impact A&M if the Academic Admit status (>1360 new SAT, plus top 25% of her HS class) holds. Plus she’ll likely make an A in the AP Physics class itself if her final exam matches the rest of her year in the class. Maybe she’ll keep the materials and try just the AP test as a standalone in the fall?
@dadof2020and2024 can’t she take her AP Physics exam on the make up day?
SInce you started your post off with “howdy” sounds like A&M is your school:-)
It used to be you could make up an AP test on your own schedule, but now they do have specific make up days.
My son had to take one of the exams at a slightly different time even than the makeup days, so if there is a morning or afternoon for one test, your child could take it the opposite time, making sure to be under observation - maybe taking a different test - for the rest of the time.
Send me a note directly if you want a better explanation
No APs this year for my son, but next year he has 3. My next child is on pace to start APs in 10th grade though, hopefully they will be more spaced out for her.
The problem we have is that all of my S18’s classes are disrupted by students taking AP exams. Like two weeks of disruption because some AP classes have double periods to do reviews.
S went to sleep around 8:30 last night, intending to hap for half an hour, then get up to finish some homework. He slept through the nap alarm and woke up at 8 am this morning when we knocked on his door. Guess he was tired!
Late start day today, so he wasn’t late to school, but he’ll have to scramble to get the homework done before it’s due.
AP reflections: S took 3 this year (Chem, APUSH, Lang), hopefully he did ok–seemed to study much more for chemistry than anything else. He is also running track, interviewing for summer jobs, getting ready for FBLA, and trying to take his driver’s ed exam. And just had prom. Oh right, and SAT in June.
So yeah, pretty busy, but he seems pretty content. Oh to be 16 again!
Thanks @sushiritto for the info on the make up dates.
@rhandco Also thanks! Those dates this year even with a bit of latitude are mixed with 5 regular high school class finals and DD said nope to adding a 6th exam in that window. I guess a time long ago the AP exams had more reschedule flexibility.
Her high school pushes dual credit over AP. So DD’s counselor said that after two college finals this week and 5 high school finals next week, enough is enough, unless that Physics credit is required for her college major and the colleges of interest will accept the AP credit. For most of the schools on her list it’s not needed with her having other dual credit sciences, or it’s not accepted in her major. So logic and teenage exhaustion have spoken.
even if she has her science core covered by DE credits, she could use it as an elective. Surly her high school teachers would let her make up her finals so she can take her AP exam.
Edit to add APs are not given in the Fall only in May.
I’m with you @3scoutsmom my problem is having a kid with 40 hours of dual credit as a HS Jr who will graduate with ~60 hours and a counselor both of whom are saying nope. After nearly burying her grandparent this weekend, I’m picking my battles here (and thanking God my mom’s alive for a little longer). I like to think I would take the test but her Jr year has been tough enough. If her reach schools care about this they’re missing out on a great kid and my wife’s family will add one more to the list of Fightin’ Texas Aggies. I’m letting go and letting God this week.
@rhandco That is the same with our school - classes march on during AP and state testing, and it’s up to you to figure out what you miss.
@sushiritto I’m just repeating what my daughter says. Who knows? I’ve found that sometimes the teachers don’t even know, so I usually take that stuff with a pound of salt.
Our semester exams are over three days, and thanks to state and AP testing she doesn’t have to go in for the first day (exempted from regular exams for those classes because, believe it or not, the school feels there is too much testing). I told her it would be a good day to really buckle down on the three big ones the next day - Spanish, honors pre-calc and anatomy - but she said “I’m not studying all day.”
And there’s the lit test the final day, where the teacher has been super lazy and not teaching at all (among other issues). She said it’s on the content of what they’ve read - including Hamlet, which she sped through in a week and relied on Google to answer the kids’ questions. I’ve had to sit down and teach this class to my daughter, and basically told her to rely on cliff notes and the like, which were seriously forbidden when I was in school. This teacher encourages it. Ugh.
Oh, and a heads up that I found on the “parents of 3-3.4 GPA” thread in the main parents forum … apparently you can ask to get your lowest ACT score expunged. It’s filling out a form and sending it through the mail. You cannot do this if you took advantage of the free sending of test scores when you registered.
I don’t know about the SAT. But it might be useful information to tuck away for those schools that want to see all of them.
@vistajay My D will also be taking the AP Latin exam as her one and only AP this year. She has other things on her plate and is not studying for it outside of assigned prep.
Her school doesn’t offer exemptions for any finals as far as I know.
@bearcatfan deleting an ACT score is definitely a good option to use if needed. Also remember to look to see if ACT scores are shown on the HS transcript and have the GC remove that as well if you do a delete. They show on my D’s transcript.
Curious - Why delete an AP score? S17 applied to 11 schools and was accepted to 9. He self reported his APs on the common app and school app (for those that don’t do the common app. He has selected a university and has submitted all of his AP scores. The 2 will get him nothing, but I cannot see it hurting in any way.
Long time lurker, first time poster. Hello, everyone!
Speaking of ACT scores, for those whose sons or daughters took the ACT on April 19 through the state testing program, did you receive scores in the mail this week? I know it’s early, but ACT said scores would start coming out three weeks after the test, so any time now, right? Just wondered if anyone has heard yet.
