@MACmiracle It is north Canton, so I don’t know about nearby. It’s a pretty built-up area that includes Akron and Cleveland in the greater metro area. There probably is something around but nothing hard core.
@bearcatfan I guess that makes it a little easier.
Now I have a chart that includes outdoor recreation…
It’s one way to cut back on the list.
Tonight my husband uttered this gem:
“Gee, this is the last year we are all living together as a family.”
:((
DS just got home from his last summer camp with his scout troop. We will start getting apps in this week. Tonight’s priority was seeing the girlfriend. :))
My son has completed a rough draft Common App essay. He’s not sure he likes the final version, so he’s going to stream of consciousness answer (type) another prompt, and see which one he likes more. I’ve been giving him mini deadlines since June, so he is not rushing to complete in August.
@apraxiamom Daughter is just about there with her essay … it is too long, but as a writer myself I told her to just keep going until she said what she had to say and then she could cut it or make it more concise. She has a few smaller ones to do that are the same (“why nursing?”) so it’s not too bad. But the ideal deadline is August 1 because our school starts back mid-August.
@bearcatfan Same deadline here. Teachers go back end of this month and students Aug 3. I want him to have everything ready to push the the submit button Aug 1. He’s got the Common App essay, and another college’s essay too. He’s got the time now to do this, but won’t when school starts.
It’s kind of cool that D’s final assignment in AP Lang was to write her Common App essay. Then, her teacher provided some great tips on adding or deleting this or that & in the end she had an essay that she & her teacher (and I) really liked.
That IS a great idea!
There’s also an Additional Information box at the end of the Common App writing section that gives you the option to add any additional information you want to share (up to 650 words). D wrote an additional essay further explaining her involvement in one of her extracurricular activities.
S18 just went off to a music camp and then goes straight to his counselor job at his away camp. He is gone for almost 6 weeks! Just a taste of when he goes away to college. D15 is now back from L.A. and home for 6 weeks, which is great even though it feels like we traded one child for the other.
I just saw D’s work schedule for the next week. She’s been working six days a week now that she has two jobs and the coming week will be just as bad. It will slow down in a couple of weeks, but then she’ll have two weeks away at camps, one as a staff member and one academic camp.
I also realized that some of the colleges where she is eligible to compete for full-tuition scholarships want her to show interest in the form of a visit and interview. Fortunately, now that we’ve narrowed the list, most are not too far away. But it might mean a morning visit and racing back for an afternoon-evening shift at work. It might come down to prioritizing and managing what we can. She can only do so much.
AP scores come out this week! Which scores are your children waiting on? D has
German
Lang
World History
Bio
Psych
She doesn’t officially get her scores until Saturday. Last year she used a proxy to see them sooner. She doesn’t seem as anxious about her scores this year, probably because she’s SO excited about McGill Summer Academy, starting on Sunday. This will be a good dry run for us, too, as D’s never been away for more than a few days.
DS18 is waiting on
Calculus BC
English Language
Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: Electricity
Psychology
DS20 is waiting on
Human Geo
Comp Sci
We’ve used a proxy server in the past and likely will do it again. The score ‘roll out’ is such a silly policy!
Technology is not my strong suit. @ShrimpBurrito and @3scoutsmom how do you use a proxy server to see AP tests sooner?
I’ve been “practicing for the empty nest” for five weeks with S18 away at coding camps at UTD. With minimal school volunteer work during this time it really has been a good test for when he graduates. It was a little emotional at first but I think it’s been very helpful for the family. S is having a great time but looking forward to coming home, and H and I can see that we really will be all right when S goes to college.
Re the essays, a friend recommended a local workshop that her son took last summer. S will take that course in a few weeks and hopefully it will help. He’s more of a utilitarian writer; lab reports and other technical writing is no problem but essays are painful, and forget fiction. Any pointers he can get from the college essay course will be useful in making his essays more lively and less like dry research papers.
D is waiting on Bio, Stats, Lit and Gov. I’ve never figured out how to do the proxy thing.
@gclsports, you can just download a vpn app onto your mobile device (there are plenty of free ones). Depending on the app, sometimes you can pick from available servers and sometimes you have to just keep refreshing it until you end up with a server in one of the early states.
ETA: two vpn apps I’ve used are Surf Easy and HotspotVPN. I’m on iOS, though I think both are available on other operating systems.
Copy and pasted from Reddit because I think that’s some place I can’t post a link from on CC
I think July 5th is the first day you can get scores.
@3scoutsmom, will that work before July 5th? I guess some colleges have already received scores, so if this is a workaround to actually see what colleges get it might be available today.
