Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@suzy100
What the heck!?!?! Who is cutting onions in here?!?!?!

My daughter applied to 7. She has said in the past that 7 is her lucky number. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, lol.

@suzy100 Woah!! That is freaking awesome!

Good evening all. I’ve fallen behind again but I did skim. Thanks to all the well wishers. Did I mention I work in an insurance agents office in one of the hardest hit areas. So today is the first day my brain hasn’t felt completely fried. Spent the day helping my boss who had 5’ of water in his house.

School will finally start for DS on Thursday. No idea what will happen with the football schedule. Other band parents will appreciate how important that is to a senior year. The neighboring rival school was completely flooded and will not open this year. My heart breaks for those seniors. They are still figuring out the details but appears they will bus to another school in the district and split the days.

In more college related news DS has been consistently scoring at his goal for the retake on the ACT. Fingers crossed!

I have definitely found my people here on CC! DS has applied to 8 schools and is considering applying to one more, but I am uncomfortable with 9 and told him it needs to be 8 or 10, not 9! :)) He doesn’t get my neurotics.

@suzy100 - this is so inspiring! Thank you for posting. D attended an admissions presentation recently at UDub and they said they regularly check cc so I guess they’re not the only ones!

@TexasMom18 that’s so rough. We’re all so sorry for all the devastation and hardship that you all are dealing with.

Anyone in the process of applying to Michigan State? We just started the process. It is not part of Common App. We are not sure what should go under “Additional Information” under “Other Information”. Also where Volunteer Activities should go

@MoTownBlues You might want to start a new thread in the Michigan State forum:

Good luck.

Thanks @ShrimpBurrito.

Hey all, I probably won’t be posting much, but plan to follow along as I assist a bright extended family member/'18 grad with some challenging personal circumstances navigate the college app and selection journey. I may be inclined to pipe up if I have knowledge of a topic  I have a D13 who just graduated from UW and a D16 beginning her sophomore year. D22’s college experience seems far off for now.

Why oh why do I keep looking at new college options? I want intellectually to help S18 pare his list, but I think we might have just added a school.

@I’m the same @Booajo. I think I’ve reached a place where I’m content with D’s safeties, so I’ve started thinking, why not try for a reach or two that might really suit her.

They might turn out to be a waste of application fee, except for the fact that they have better admit rates for women and options to improve affordability.

Off topic, slightly:

Teaching your kid to drive.

Wow. Childbirth was a breeze compared to this. We a have very kind, hardworking, responsible kid. But teaching her to drive has not been easy.

She’s had Driver’s Ed, some paid professional in-car sessions, and it’s still hard. Getting better but the current issue is merging onto the highway. I’ve never realized how hard it is to help someone else learn to do this. I have to be the one doing the driving with her (my hubby recently had open heart surgery) and that moment of merging is terrifying for my DD and me. It’s so hard because we are both cautious by nature and the other drivers are often unforgiving and the stakes are so high.

We did buy a “student driver” magnet. It’s a hoot when we forget to take it off and I drive my 50+ self around alone with that on, lol.

How did it go for you kid? Any tips? We’ve taken our time with this but it’s a skill she will need soon.

@Astro77 Luckily we live in an area where there’s hardly any need to get on the highway (and with all the construction most sane people avoid it, anyway). So that’s the coward’s way, lol. I never took her on the highway and it’s not part of the road test loop. Her driving instructor took her out once or twice. She doesn’t get on the highway to drive.

Have you tried taking her out super early in the morning, especially on Sundays, where there might not be as much traffic? Maybe once she gets her confidence it will be a little easier to do it different times of the day.

@booajo because like me youbare afraid that you are missing that one perfect fit. I call it my cinderella complex.

Somedays I am simply astounded by the things I read on CC.

Took a peak at DS Bama portal this morning. 8->
ROLL TIDE!

Now do I tell him or wait for it to come in the mail? Keep in mind this is his #1 choice (and if he can pull off act score and the scholarship to make the OOS tuition feasible it is where he will go).

@Astro77, I had to teach both of my girls how to drive and that’s right up there with college app season for testing our relationship. I think @bearcatfan’s suggestion to practice on the highway on Sunday mornings or other off times is a good one.

So this morning I started putting together a list of the essays for D’s early apps - shout out to @gclsports for a little help with finding a few we couldn’t find. We are up to 8 I think! Aaaaaand she still has not completed her Common App essay. This morning’s weekly discussion about college apps was a little pointy.
