Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

You guys are the best! Thank you all for the support. It really made me happy, and that let me step away from my worries and gain perspective. After thinking about it a lot, I think she thinks that I don’t believe in her, or that she’s not so special after all. Of course she’s special! And I do believe in her.

All of our kids are special. Whether they get into a particular school, though, depends on what a school is looking for THAT year. And I loved the comment about the bloody tongue because I also want to say that a school doesn’t know that a kid is special unless the kid can convey that to them. (Yup, back to that essay!)

Anyway, you guys hit the nail on the head. If she found a good safety or two, I’d be so much more relaxed about this process. I’m worried about April being a blood bath.

Thanks for the GC suggestion. I’ll follow through on that. I’ve taken my D to visit a lot of different safeties, and she didn’t like any of them. I’ll ask the GC to chat up a few, and to give my D a timeline for her essays. Meanwhile, I’ll take her to the beach this weekend, shelve all college talk for 2 weeks so we can just breathe. Thanks again guys!

My DD runs in what I fondly refer to as the Nerd Herd. Amongst her group we had lots of discussions about reality of acceptance.

In 2015 (if memory serves) Berkeley (CAL) received approximately 87K apps for 14K spots. That is a lot of No’s to kids with identical stats.

Her group collectively got into:
Rice
Harvard
UT and A&M - majority were auto admits.
Cal Berkeley
Berkelee Music (Boston)
Pratt Institute
University Minn Science & Engineering
TMU
NYU
Cornell
and a few more I can’t remember.
They did not get into:
Columbia
Stanford
Which had some disappointment.

I tease that after the top 5% is pulled off, the selection committee starts throwing darts.

We spent a lot of time chatting about safety schools. Funny, my DD was the one who didn’t have a safety and one of the ones not an auto admit but Harvard had almost identical stats to DD with a slightly lower ACT and also did not get auto admit. Everyone else had the auto admits as their safety.

Its a giant crap shoot IMO.

@apraxiamom That school is within a (long) stone’s reach of me - congrats! The people I know who have gone to Steubenville absolutely love it, and have gained lifelong friendships from it.

Hey folks, after sitting on the sidelines for some time now, I’m officially wading in! Made an account and all

Hubby and I have D18 and S21, and are a bit behind some of with with regard to apps. D has been starting some essays but is slowed down by summer work for APs and school starts next week. We’re realizing we underestimated the amount of work some of the apps are so I’ll be rolling up my sleeves this weekend and trying to help her out. So much for a holiday!

Looking forward to hanging out here with all of you.

@Veronica02 Welcome! I will admit that I helped a lot on the applications.

Filling out parent information stuff, running interference with the guidance counselor, asking questions of the colleges. I know some folks feel the kids need to do all this on their own, but I would no sooner have my 17 year old fill out this stuff without help than send her to the car dealership to negotiate the purchase of a new vehicle.

I am lucky that I have a daughter who recognizes when she needs/would like help. We’ve worked well these past couple months on all of this, and I am very grateful for that.

@bearcatfan : Thanks!

Franciscan is honestly now tied with Furman for first place. When this all started last spring, Furman was first independently. But Franciscan’s values have really impressed S over the months. S still loves Furman and it is closer to home and family members live there. Of course it all depends on merit and/or financial aid for both Furman and Franciscan.

When the letter came, after the hugs, etc., I posted about the acceptance on FB to friends and family. I told S it was a proud mommy moment.

@Veronica02 : welcome to you and all the new members!

Crazy mom moment of the day: When I got up this morning I noticed D’s school planner sitting on the table with a piece of paper sort of sticking out a little bit. I immediately thought “Could that be the transcript?” So although last night I had discarded the idea of discreetly rummaging through her backpack to hunt for the transcript… [-X I did just flip open the cover of her planner as it sat on the table, and there was a folded piece of paper that looks a lot like a transcript! I did not touch it. :blush: But now I know. I feel like a crazy person, but I know. 8-}

Welcome @Veronica02!

Argggghh!!! Late Friday afternoon, after his counselor had left already, my son texts me, he just realized his schedule is messed up, it is missing English 12. English 12 is the only class he needs to graduate! School starts Tuesday.

His schedule came on paper in regular mail weeks ago, NONE of us noticed this.
Someone said maybe the guidance counselor sent him an e-mail that he didn’t read, trying to track that down.

Talking to other kids he thinks there are 3 English 12 AP sections which conflict with his AP Bio or Calc BC or his final Project Lead the Way Engineering class. So he might need to drop one of those or maybe take English honors or regular. (Except they probably would have listed one of those if they fit.)

Son seems fairly calm.
Freaking out a bit!
Just he (we?) had weeks to notice this “one little detail” and missed it.
What about all the details coming up for college apps?
So many are due for early action/scholarships/maybe one early decision on Nov 1st. ACK!!!

And not much summer progress on apps so far.
A spreadsheet of schools and a list of potential Commn App topics…

(Thanks for listening to this vent.
Can mostly read only on weekends, and have a weeks’ worth to catch up on here!)

I am new here, but have been following Arts group for about 4 months now. We live in TX and Dd17 school has not announced anything yet but feel sure she will be NMSF.

I am, trying to come up with safety, match and reach schools is this the right place for some input, guidance?

Here is a list of schools that provide large scholarships for NMFs. The list is a bit outdated, so you’ll need to double check the details of any school that catches your interest.

Example: USC’s award is now competitive, not automatic. A few of the schools have reduced the dollar amounts of the packages.

Off the top of my head, Texas Tech offers true full ride with stipends for books, travel and misc expenses.UNT and UT Tyler offer full rides, but possibly without the extra stipends at TT. UT Dallas is very close to a full ride. A&M offers full tuition plus, and Baylor and Univ of Houston offer full tuition. UT Austin doesn’t offer anything.

That’s it. I’m done waiting. To quote Popeye, I’ve had all I can stands and I can’t stands no more!

I’ve tapped the family network (of GCs and administrators), and someone in another district will check The Book to see if S’s name is listed. Probably won’t happen until Tuesday, but I’m good with that.

This will prevent me from having to be That Mom at S’s school.

Welcome @Veronica02 & @MamaBearSCS - glad you’re joining the fun!

Wow y’all have been busy!

@TexasMom18 your side of town seems to have a long road to recovery! I am sorry. Over here on the SE side of town things have dried up and the mailperson was out delivering today! Schools extended closure until 9/11 and our Homecoming game has been postponed until (?). I just finished up DD2018’s homecoming mum and one for her boyfriend’s little brother’s girlfriend (that was pretty convoluted!) )while we were shut up in the house during Harvey. I guess that I was overly optimistic that the 9/15 Homecoming Game would happen on schedule.

@DavidPuddy I admit (LOL)…I am a type A complentionist (but will not cop to anxious, I am far too planned to be anxious about anything!) that initially drove DD2018 to the completion of 17 applications by Sept. 1. After she started getting things done and submitted, she happily took the wheel and didn’t give me the eyeroll whenever I prodded. But, yes, I definitely set the deadline. She is officially done! Right now, I am on edge because I can’t decide if it needs to be 18 applications because 18 is a “round” number or leave it at 17 because lucky #7, so sad!

I will echo your sentiments though…NO ONE IS BEHIND YET!

@labegg 17? Or maybe 18? 8-}

For awhile, D had 9 schools on her apply list. Does that make anyone else squirmy? Not quite 10, and not the nice, even 8. Now she’s down to 8, and I’m much more comfortable.

@labegg Lol. I can so relate. And 17 vs 18? My OCD would be making me crazy over that, too!

S is applying to 4; he has two #1’s and two #2’s. Can’t seem to get him to move beyond that but he’s got one reach for our budget, one that should be doable, one that should provide good merit, and one that should provide great merit.

So, because I am obsessed with the admissions game and I can’t seem to bring myself to play the number odds game because I stink with numbers, here is my version of predictions. I went back a reviewed all of the school’s scattergrams in Naviance for her HS and cross referenced it to her chances on Cappex (which I found oddly accurate for DD2016).

This is the list of schools that DD has completed applications for and in ( ) is my prediction if she will be accepted/denied. The black prediction is my husband’s guess. Clemson & Trinity are too close for me to call; the first prediction is what I hope/suspect it will be; the second is what is will probably be.

This list is in her order of preference to attend. which she went over last night when she pushed the button on her final (?) application. Well technically the cat pushed the button, she likes to have the cat paw the button to submit (yeah, don’t ask)!

 1. University of Washington - Seattle (denied) denied
 2. Clemson (accepted)/(denied) same
 3. Texas A&M (denied/PSA bridge?) accepted
 4. Auburn (accepted) accepted
 5. LSU (accepted) accepted
 6. Loyola Chicago (accepted) accepted
 7. University of Colorado - Boulder (accepted) accepted
 8. University of Florida (denied) accepted
 9. Florida State (denied) accepted
 10. Fordham (denied) denied
 11. High Point (accepted) accepted (no $$)
 12. Trinity University (denied)/(accepted) accepted
 13. University of Mississippi ACCEPTED
 14. College of Charleston (accepted) denied
 15. Stephen F Austin ACCEPTED
 16. University of South Carolina (accepted) accepted 17.University of Texas***(denied/PLAN bridge) accepted (he is truly clueless)

***UT should be in the first spot, but DD2018 refuses to list it as first because it would be the hands down winner, but she has really no chance of being accepted, so she just discounts it altogether as a method to protect her emotions.

@BuckeyeMWDSG - I like your plan!

This is sort of random, but I was reading the “best threads of all time” thread and someone posted this one, which I had forgotten. It’s my absolute favorite ever. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/1335649-homeless-didnt-get-in-through-the-waitlist-have-no-where-else-to-go-need-advice-p1.html
