@katstat1 So sorry for your D’s rough day and messed up car. I’m glad she wasn’t hurt. Hugs to you both!
Oh no @katstat1, your poor daughter! I’m glad she was not hurt, but that is really scary.
Got an interesting piece of mail today, from University of Cincinnati inviting her to “Senior Scholars Day” - an “invitation-only event designed for academically-talented students like you.” Basically, a tour of campus, overview of the application process and scholarships, a college breakout, lunch and some other stuff. It’s an all-day thing on a Friday.
She has already applied there, and toured there. They have her ACT score but not her transcript (come ON, guidance office) so I’m not sure if this is worth our time or not. Much of the time in the nursing-specific breakout during her previous visit was spent talking about how hard it was to get in.
She is nowhere near the ACT score required to be part of their honors program. GPA yes, but they don’t have that yet.
Does it mean anything that she’s received this, or do you think it’s just another mailing?
My S got that mailer today, too. He hasn’t toured yet, I can’t remember if he’s ever sent any scores there. He sends scores to places his friends go, so it’s possible he has.
@BuckeyeMWDSG someone in UC’s mailroom must have been busy, lol.
She also has a letter sitting here from one of the other colleges she applied to. It’s probably a “thank you we will let you know” letter but of course she’s running late. I’m showing great restraint in not holding it up to the light. :-w
@bearcatfan My son also got that mailer. I figured he got it because he was local, because his high school sends about 20% of each class to UC, and because his GC sent him to some kind of presentation UC held about a scholarship or honors program at the Linder College of Business. My son hasn’t yet sent his scores or otherwise expressed interest in UC. He will apply as a safety but prefers to go farther from home.
LOL, I figured it didn’t mean much in her case.
Progress today - DD and I sat down to wrap up her work on the Coalition app for her #1 choice, and she feels like her essay is ready to go. We need to update the resume attachment, but that’s about it after a last review of everything. And, she agreed to submit an application to another college I suggested that uses the Coalition app just in case they offer a good merit scholarship. So, we might have the first application submitted by the end of this weekend, yay!!
At our school, after kids submit the online application, they have to then go in and request that transcripts and letters of recommendation get sent. Students have to allow 3 weeks for those pieces to get mailed out, so applications due to college on Nov. 1 have to have transcript and LOR submitted to the school by Oct. 8.
Progress here today as well! I am thrilled for D. She’s been really struggling with her Common App essay, but she had a major breakthrough today and now it’s fantastic. She’s a good writer, but was having a lot of trouble with this. It must be very difficult for our kids to encapsulate themselves in 650 words.
Almost ready to hit submit on all of her Common App schools. <:-P
The progress at my house is that I’ve been able to keep my mouth shut! 1 more week of self-imposed silence to go.
@melvin123 Go, Melvin, go!
Congratulations to everyone else on the progress.
I’m keeping my mouth shut, too. D was out all day at an EC today–left at six, home at five. She works tomorrow. And she has an “assignment” due for a this major project she’s the leader of this fall. In between, she’s trying to finish up AP chem summer homework. Apps are just so unrealistic right now.
I’m kind of hoping the SAT will come back high enough for full tuition at UAH since that app can be done super quick. That way I would know she has a solid back up plan if her big reach doesn’t work and no other apps ever get done for lack of time…
My son thanked me again today for making him do his essays this summer and apps by early August. I knew senior year would be busy (and therefore the reason for the maternal push), but neither of us factored in a hurricane!
Oh @katstat1 I am so sorry for your Ds rough day. Glad she’s OK, though.
Congrats to everyone on all the progress being reported today! Stay strong @melvin123 !
D has been working on her Common App today, she just has to finish the activities section, then she will have all of the main sections complete. Except of course for the essay, which continues to plague her. I hope she has a breakthrough like your D had @ShrimpBurrito she is really struggling and absolutely miserable with it. I finally told her I thought she should set it aside and work on something else and just let it simmer in her brain for a while.
One huge benefit of keeping my mouth shut was that my D initiated a 3 hour conversation with me last night, just chatting about her classes this semester and what her friends are doing.
@1822mom I’m so glad your D is setting the essay to the side for a bit. That’s the beauty of starting these things early so this break can be taken and perspective gained.
@apraxiamom I hope you’re in a safe area!
@MACmiracle fingers crossed for your D’s SAT score!
@1822mom - my D is also struggling with her CA essay. She’s on the right track but it’s not specific enough and it feels sterile and disconnected. She has a dramatic story to tell but she’s dancing around putting her real emotions on paper. She had a life-threatening experience a few years ago and wanted to write about it. Initially I thought it would be good - cathartic - but she hasn’t really dug in the ways she needs to for it to be compelling. So she’s also agreed (at my prodding) to set it aside in order to get some perspective.
Goodness knows she has enough supplementals to work on in the meantime. Ugh these essays seem never-ending
S18 has been touring colleges for the past 3 days with dad and I. It was a great idea because it made the process real for him. We’ve had great talks about what needs to happen and that crisis mode/half way work won’t get him into top choice. I promised him I’d be quiet since he seems to get it. We agreed on Oct 1 deadline to submit EA to his top choices. Fingers crossed!
@melvin123 that’s awesome that you were able to have that conversation. I find it really really hard to keep my mouth shut but often it pays off if I do.
@VikkiG5 I think that’s a great idea! Goal of one by October 1. I may try for that here
Need application advice for my DD!
She has essays drafted, ECs listed, etc. She is ready to do applications, and many of her schools have November 1 deadlines.
We’re hearing we need to send in applications before she can get transcripts and recommendations sent from her HS, and that should happen by beginning of October?
PROBLEM: she took ACT again yesterday! Last time, she was one who had the results take forever! Weeks after most people.
She needs to self-report scores on application? Should she wait for the new scores?
Thanks!
Yesterday’s ACT scores are scheduled to be released Sept 19…I would self report the old score and hold off on the new score unless she is CERTAIN that she improved. At any rate I would think she would still be getting the new score in plenty of time to get the applications submitted by Nov 1.
Thanks I hope they come out in September but last time hers and others she took it with came weeks later.
ACT website says scores are first released online September 19 THRU November 3. Seriously??? They have a reputation for releasing faster than SAT but at least SAT does one, equitable national release day.
