Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@Astro77 - we had to wait about two weeks during the last ACT, I’m not sure why it took so long.

We had to make a similar decision on this one. She went and submitted all her applications. She mostly took it for merit, and she was comfortably in the accepted range for every program but one (she still is in the range but a little on the lower side). We decided together to just submit everything, and maybe submit the score to that iffy one and hope for the best.

My rant of the day:

Web Assign is evil and should burn in hell.

That is all. ~X(

Interested in some opinions on this from other parents:

D18 has some interest in a smaller college that offers a 5 yr OT program. I contacted admissions the week before last to ask about how merit scholarships would apply to the 5th year of the program. Admissions put me through to the admissions person who handles students from the West - I left a voicemail and no return call. Gave it a week and called back and left my name and number with the main admissions contact to give to this same person - several days later no return call!

After a week and a half I contacted the Bursar’s Office and got my answer but it’s amazing how one person representing a university can turn you off. The couple of others I talked with in the process have been great. Call me crazy but kind of like return phone calls prior to committing to give a school $150k!

@MACmiracle my DD knows she’s in at UAH, only has one other app already submitted and no plans for any more.
Hope your DD gets the desired score.

May 2016. DD’s group took SAT. We waited 4 wks then started to seek out scores. We got the run around for another 3 weeks from College Board. They used every day of their 7 week notification clause. In July, College Board sent us an email that the tests (all taken that day including subject tests) had been lost and they rescheduled a special session for 9 days from when we received the email.
We had kids who had to return from summer vacations etc in order to sit for the retake.

My point of this is give them a few weeks and then start bugging as lost does happen.

@SnowflakeDogMom that is absolutely horrifying! We had a school in our region have every single AP test taken this year cancelled. All the students had to return to retake them during the summer. The reason was that apparently the school did not properly administer the tests. The school offered extra study sessions for those who chose to retake. I believe something like 800 students were impacted. So yeah, stuff happens with testing.

On a brighter note I can say that when my D took ACT twice with no hiccups, her scores were slow to come after the first test, and out the first week (but not the first day) after the second. I don’t think the # of times is significant I just think it was luck of the draw, so maybe if you pulled a later straw already you’ll get an earlier one this time @Astro77! I think in your situation, if the school has a deadline for her to submit by so they can get their stuff done, I would wait until a few days before that to submit. If her scores aren’t ready yet, use the old ones and then you can always do a nice little positive “update” to admissions when her new improved scores are released.

@my2caligirls that is annoying. I think if it’s just the local admissions rep who was the issue, you can probably let it go, after all you won’t be dealing with admissions anymore once she’s in! But if you were getting an overall vibe of difficulty in dealing with administrative issues, that’s a red flag for sure. D ended up crossing a school off her list because in nearly every student review she read, mixed in with the good stuff was something about what a pain it was to accomplish even the smallest administrative task. She recognizes there will be challenges and bureaucracy anywhere, but if it’s so bad nearly every student comments on it? That’s a bad sign…

Hurray! My D18 just wrote her essays and submitted her Common app to her top 2! And she submitted her NMF to her HS- now they have to do their part for the NMF and they need to send in the transcript and the counselors part for the common app and we will be done!! D18 had been dragging her feet on the essays so this was huge progress to get it ALL done this weekend… of course when I asked her if this was a huge weight off her shoulders, she was like meh…but I was doing cartwheels!!

Non-college or school news: 2018 son was baptized today!

I can finally report that my S has made substantial progress on his Common App essay this weekend! He doesn’t have a finished draft, but is pretty close (just needs to figure out the best way to conclude). I read what he has so far and it reads well, sounds just like he does when he speaks, and actually says something about him rather than focusing entirely on someone or something else. What a relief to know he’s almost there!

My fingers are crossed that all of you who are in the path of Irma are fairing well!

I don’t know who it was that originally posted the Hack the College Essay site, but THANK YOU! He had a Skype conversation with my S18 tonight and my son said he was the coolest guy ever and he not only really enjoyed talking with him, but he was super jazzed to write his essay after the conversation!

My D submitted her first app today to a non-common app school. She has written her common app essay but needs some tweaks. Hope to have that done this weekend. Fingers crossed.

@RoonilWazlib99 That is so cool that you talked to the Essay Guy (who seems to be becoming a celebrity here)! Did you send the essay first, and then the guy went through it? I’m just curious how that all worked.

Yay on all the essays and applications being done! Now if only the guidance counselors would do something, lol.

In other news, FAFSA id’s were created over the weekend. I’m good about organizing paperwork, so hopefully I will have everything at my fingertips to fill this out.

I remember filling out my own, back in the day, on paper. It must not have been that hard. My mom said “just put whatever I made last year.” :))

S is ready for us to gear up on UTD items. Yesterday we were behind a car with multiple “college mom” decals, and he requested that we just get regular UTD decals and not the ones that include the word “mom” or “dad”. I said I hadn’t realized he was ready for H or me or our cars to sport the UTD logo yet and he said it’s fine with him. S himself has five or six UTD shirts, but he’s also still wearing shirts from other colleges we visited. H and I aren’t much for college shirts ourselves (we both went to Penn State but haven’t had PSU shirts for 15 years) but we’re thinking of each getting one UTD shirt. Around here people like to put out little garden flags to support their own or their kids’ colleges, so I might get one of those too.

@traveler98 , yes gearing up is half the fun! Spouse and I each have a few shirts, car magnets and a house flag for D15’s college. Oh and I have an Hawaiian shirt too! Slight chance S18 will attend the same school, but otherwise we will be gearing up again next year.

It appears we have only lost a hibiscus… we still have power, etc. Had some water come under the front door but we had towels already down, in case. It was a close shave though. Thinking about the folks in miami, the keys, naples, etc who took the brunt of it. Tampa’s shield is real  its been since 1921 since the last major that hit here directly. We even had the opposite of storm surge!? All the water in the bay and even along the gulf beaches was pushed out before and during the worst part of the storm. It’s crazy.

Now, its time for DS to rewrite his essay as he won’t have school until at least Wednesday

Hope all the Florida posters are doing ok this morning!

S18 had his senior ring Mass and dance this past weekend. Great to see the whole class bonding and getting excited about being seniors. As we get closer to hitting the “submit” button on apps, the school odds are definitely shifting. Looks like Bama is dropping off in favor of a local safety he likes better. Rhodes comes off too. Academically, he has perhaps 2 reaches, 5 matches and 5 safeties. But only 2 of the 5 are true safeties due to competitive music school auditions and financial constraints.

Miami(Fla)-30%
USCal-15%
Furman-15%
Loyola (NO)-10%

Glad to hear the damage hasn’t been too bad at your house, @NamePoster. Hopefully our other FL CC friends have fared as well.

D loves the college gear. Most of her casual and workout clothes have a college logo. She’s visited a lot of schools so she has quite a collection. About 80% of the college gear we see around here is OU or OSU (Oklahoma State–not the OSU that OU beat in football this weekend ;)) ), but my favorite college shirt I’ve seen locally says YALE WAITLIST. :))

@vistajay
I was just thinking I would do an odds update late this week.

Question: Why no Tulane on the list for you all? You may have mentioned it prior.
