That sucks @DiotimaDM. Maybe one of @suzy100’s cabana boys should come by with a relaxing adult beverage.
@DiotimaDM in the following link it mentions that (2) items are necessary to prove residency.
It also says that for a child, it may be possible to use a birth certificate to link the child to the parent who can show proof of residency (in the parent’s name).
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/dl/residency_requirement
It also says to bring proof of social security number (social security card), in addition to passport.

I would try and call them to verify what you need to bring exactly.
@DiotimaDM
I grew up in Calif - I see not much has changed.
Totally sucks for your son who I am sure is just chomping at the bit to gain that extra piece of independence.
When I went to get my DD her permit here in Texas, we had been here a couple of years. I did have a Texas DL but I hadn’t had it long enough to satisfy the parent taught drivers training clause they have here which I believe is 6 years of clean driving history. The clerk asked me if I had my NV DL number so they could pull my records. This would be the same number listed on the license that the state of Texas insisted I hand over before they would process my Texas application, the same license they “ran” to make sure I had a clean history before they would give me a TX license.
I said this to the clerk, her response “well, didn’t you keep a copy”? Now…why would I keep a copy of the license they were replacing and had already verified was clean?
Gov’t bureaucracy never ceases to amaze me.
My husband was a NMF. He claims to not remember what he got on his SAT (although I doubt this) and recalls that he studied heavily for the SAT, which is why it gets under his skin so much that his DDs didn’t seem all that compelled to study for their standardized tests. He applied to MIT, Rensselaer (did I get is right this time?), U of Rochester and Case. He was accepted to all and ultimately turned down MIT because Case offered him a full ride including room & board and money to study abroad. He too says the level of academics at Case was startlingly difficult and is glad he did not go the MIT route.
I had big visions of going to school out of state and spent many months trying to convince my parents William & Mary was THE dream school. They ultimately limited me to in-state schools. I applied to Bowling Green, Kent State and Ohio University. Accepted to all three, but OU won and for the bonus, it was the furthest from home…
The cabana boy thing is funny, not my style, but funny.
On the thread for my older son (HS Class of 2013), talk around this time moved to both time in a basement (I think, this is off the top of my head) where no kids were allowed and decked out with a full size bar or having drink on a cruise ship called the SS Indecision. Lots of people spent a long time on the SS Indecision while kids applied and then waited and then made up their minds where to go.
Again, I may be recalling this incorrectly, but my sense is that these threads move toward talk of fruity drinks with umbrellas right about now.
Re: Gov’t bureaucracy
So I’m checking the list of documents, and it includes not just your SSN, but proof of your SSN, so S needs his actual Social Security card - which I have no idea where it is. (For the record, I don’t know where mine is, either. Too many moves.)
If he was 18 and had a CADL, he could apply for a replacement online, except, of course, that you need the SS card to apply for a CADL.
So if we can’t find the SS card, we have to go to a field office. The nearest one is 30 miles from S’s school, and the hours are M-F, 9-4. Except Weds. They close at noon on Weds.
They won’t let you in the line after 3:30. School starts just before 8 and gets out at 3.
Is anyone seeing the problem here?
Hopefully we can make an appointment, and hopefully they can be flexible about the 3:30 part. It’s ludicrous that a child has to miss school for something like that, and I shudder to think what this would be like for a family with parents who work 9-5 and/or have to rely on public transportation.
I definitely need one of those cabana boys.
@DiotimaDM does your son need to be there to order a replacement card? Luckily for us, the SS department is a block away from our office. My daughter needed her card last spring to apply for an internship. My husband was able to handle it.
Hubs found S’s SS card!
I have a file where I keep such things - birth certs, marriage lic. etc. but S’s SS card wasn’t in it (nor is mine), which could well have meant it was lost in the ether somewhere. Thank the Maker for DH.
Last night was another doozy:
toof: “let’s get this done tonight so X can do their part soon”
l’il toof: “ok, sounds good”
… an hour or so later (10:30pm), no work done due to online discussion…

Yep I remember the SS Indecision from my D15. I spent a lot of time on that ship. I guess it is time to start packing, ironing my cruise wear and thinking of my ship assignment. Last time I was in charge of early morning jogs on the Lido Deck or something. But my achilles is flaring up, so I will need to think of another appropriate position. :))
You know how most of you stalk your kids test sites, application admissions etc., well that is how I am with the family documents, LOL
I loan them out only when necessary and I get them back as soon as I possibly can.
My 28 yr. old DS laughs when he has to call his Mom to get is SS card or Birth Cert.
@S18D20mom Roll Tide!
So sorry to hear about the athletic injuries. There’s really no words to make that better.
Feeling the fatigue as well. I waffle between wanting to nag and between thinking he’s turning 18 next week and needs to start taking ownership. And then I worry that he won’t and will miss his shot. Rinse and repeat.
@chippedtoof I have thought of that commercial so many times over this past week! =))
@DiotimaDM I don’t think the SS card is required if he’s got the passport, but better safe than sorry. As someone already noted the birth certificate would have saved them in this situation. I remember going in for D’s written and having way more documentation than they wanted or needed just because I didn’t want there to be any issues at all, there weren’t. (We are also in CA) When he gets to the behind the wheel test, I will give you a heads up that although they don’t list this on the items to bring, you do need to bring the vehicle’s current registration in addition to the proof of insurance. We messed this one up. It wasn’t a big deal because the card was in the glove box and we just had to run back out to the car to get it. But then we had to go get back in line again (fortunately we were early for our appt), then as it was almost our turn again I noticed that I grabbed an expired reg card! My punishment for never cleaning out my glove box was I had to race out to the parking lot and hunt for the right one before it was Ds turn in line. A lot of running around but all was well. I think all of Ds friends have had DMV adventures as they’ve gone through the process as well. The story usually starts: So-and-so was supposed to get her license/permit today at the DMV but… chaos ensues.
I could sure use a fruity beverage on the deck of the SS Indecision right about now! There is a glimmer of light appearing at the end of essay tunnel though. Ds English class has started working on college essays! <:-P Just when she needed a boost. She’s going to work on her main Common App essay, and I think getting that done, as I’ve said before, will really boost her spirits. Having it assigned as classwork will assure that it will get done
so it’s win-win.
So apparently this happened to DD today.
DD is an office aide during her second period, in the attendance office. One of the ladies who works in the office has a 2017 D who just started at A&M and is on the dance team, we know her vaguely, DDs danced together in elementary school, before the went their separate ways in dance and cheer. Mrs Z was asking DD about where she was applying, so DD gives her the list, including A&M. Mrs Z gets very excited and really quizzes DD about her application, scores, gpa, rank etc, insisting that DD should go to A&M. DD says she won’t hear from A&M until December because she is a review admit. Mrs Z can’t believe it is that long of a wait, especially because DD applied early, so she picks up the phone and calls A&M admissions to confirm December (yes it is Dec). DD thought that was just too funny, that Mrs Z was so excited she had to call A&M. DD said “nothing like getting Mom-ed at school”, particularly by someone you are not super close with. Too bad she couldn’t have put a good word in for DD, lol.
Those A&M folks are enthusiastic! LOL
Indeed.
nevermind, problem was solved before I posted
@SnowflakeDogMom you sound a lot like me!
I was ferociously guarding our passports on our recent trip, as soon as everyone was done going through checkpoints I held my hand out to put them safely away again, lol.
They are. And on a serious note, the Aggie network is a tangible plus for the school. A lot of places tout post graduation employment networking and there are some great ones, but A&M rates right at the top of this criterion.
D18 got a call from a student from her top school yesterday (she didn’t answer so they left a message) saying they were excited she applied and for her continued interest. D18 was very excited! Then she said, of course, they probably called a ton of people. But at least she was excited for a minute.
