Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@shelleee My DD has gotten two of those calls from the biggest school she’s applied to - I won’t even say it’s her top one, just the biggest in terms of students. She lets everything go to voicemail (except me … she knows better lol) and it said about the same thing and to call admissions if she had questions.

I figure it’s some work study kid who got stuck working for admissions, lol.

It is exciting when they call isn’t it? Since D got her NAU acceptance they have called at least once a week!! :open_mouth:
Goes right to voicemail, but they always have a reason, congrats on acceptance, we’re having an info session in your area soon you should come, hey thanks for rsvping to the info session don’t forget to come, oh by the way there’s another info session a bit farther but still close by you might want to try that one, etc. We laugh a bit over how excessive it’s been, and feel a bit of sympathy for the students who have the job to make these calls, but I can tell she is feeling the love. They also sent her a letter with a nice scholarship that brings the cost down to in-state rates. She’s feeling real good about her safety these days, which is a good thing. :x

I hope some of her other schools come through with some love as well!

I guess when the decisions roll in, the colleges have to demonstrate interest - not the students.

D is feeling the love from some of her schools, too. ASU Barrett is really rolling out the red carpet for her upcoming visit. They have customized a great day/overnight for her, including a (one-on-one?!) meeting with Barrett’s Dean. :open_mouth:

She’s gotten invitations to TWO dinners hosted by OU at local upscale venues. She’ll be out of town for the one that President Boren will attend, but she may go to the other. Even her GC is encouraging her to go. D made the decision a couple of weeks ago to not apply to OU, but wow, they are really showing the love. D laments the fact that OU is so close. If it were in another state, she says, she’d surely have it at the top of her list.

Teenagers. :-j

S has been getting student calls as well, from schools he hasn’t even applied to. He finds them creepy and sends them all to voicemail. I kind of feel sorry for the poor college students who get stuck cold-calling strangers. Although surely at least some of them like the job. A friend in college needed work and took a job with the alumni association calling alumni to solicit donations, and although she was one of the most positive and outgoing people I’ve ever known that phone job was just soul-crushing for her. The students calling my kid right now are basically functioning as telemarketers because he hasn’t applied to their schools (or even expressed any interest in most of them) and he finds it unsettling that they even have his phone number to begin with. He swears the only time he checked the “contact me” box was on his freshman PSAT, but College Board is still selling his data anyway. Rice sent the fee waiver for having taken the SAT subject tests; there’s no way that could be a relic of the freshman PSAT “yes” mistake. Likewise all the marketing for National Merit programs can only be based on recent test scores; his freshman PSAT was nowhere near NMSF territory. If this is what happens WITHOUT opting in to marketing through CB, I’d hate to know what it’s like for kids who did opt in.

Wow, very cool about all the special invitations. We’ve received a few phone calls and still getting lots of mailings but definitely no red carpets being rolled out here. I am hoping there will be some special scholarship invitation weekends in her future, but she’s really on the cusp with her 34ACT to be considered for Chancellors at Pitt or Dist Scholars at Udel etc. Competition for these high level awards is pretty stiff :/. We’re honestly just hoping for some decent merit to make it worth her while. @ShrimpBurrito I really wanted my daughter to apply to ASU Barrett, what a great program, but I think she feels it’s too far away. Wonderful program though, curious what your D thinks of it after her special visit!

@traveler98 don’t be so sure. Did he ever go back into his college board account and “uncheck” the box? My D also said “yes” on her freshman year PSAT, but we decided by sophomore year that enough was enough. We went in and changed the selection in the account online, though now when I look at her account I can’t find where we did that. She never took SAT, only PSAT. But the effects of that “yes” are still felt. She still gets mail from schools she has never even heard of or considered. Most of them are “4 year” stalkers. They’ve been mailing her since freshman year, so I don’t think they got her info recently, they just got it, and never got rid of it. But unchecking the box online reduced the volume significantly. She gets very little mail from schools she has not contacted. Email is another story… :-??

@AmyBeth68 ASU isn’t very strong in D’s area of interest, but she still says she could thrive there. She visited once already with her dad as a sophomore. If nothing else, it’s a huge relief for her to know that this is Worst Case Scenario. She truly loves her safety.

S20 is going to Tempe with us. Could be a good fit for him.

For the record, as NMSF, ASU is reimbursing D up to $250 on the cost of her airfare.

Well now for a comedy break. My husband turned me on to this episode of the show Adam Ruins College. It’s a nerdy comedic take on the college process backed up by data/research. It’s really hilarious and provided a much-needed reprieve and I learned some things I didn’t know. The show runs on TruTV but if you don’t have that channel, I found a recording of the episode about college - some of it was shot at Claremont-McKenna (I recognize it because we visited recently). Enjoy!

I will be interested to hear what you all think of ASU. It’s pretty much right in our backyard and my D18 did an internship there last summer. She disliked it immensely. but, it is huuuuuge and she doesn’t want anything near that large. Just hit 100K enrolled students.

Wowwwww @amominaz ! Does that 100k include online students? I think once you hit a certain number (30k? 40k?) it doesn’t matter much anymore.

DD’18 sent out the new SAT score report: 72 hours later, she got a letter from the State Flagship with a substantial scholarship for tuition! It’s not her first choice, but she most certainly has gained a little hop in her step!

D18 told me today that not only has her HS still not sent her transcripts to her common app schools, they also have held up her letters of recommendation that her teacher completed on August 22nd!! She can see in Naviance that the teacher completed the reco but the school has the letter of reco and the transcripts as still pending. I’ve already checked and been told that it was going to be completed one week ago today and it’s still not done!! Why?? We only have 300 seniors, and I don’t know how many seniors have submitted college applications yet. My daughter submitted hers weeks ago. I’d like to do the happy dance with the rest of you and hear some acceptances but without her transcript her application is not complete!

Wow, @glido!

@ShrimpBurrito - I think that includes online. However, I have heard they are “encouraging” non-online students to take courses online because they don’t physically have the space for them. Now, in Barrett, it might be different, but I think overall they have grown too large for their current buildings.

@amominaz Thanks for sharing that. Barrett students still take plenty of non-honors classes. I may ask about this during our visit.

@mommdc thanks for that link.

My nephew attends ASU Barrett. He is a junior now. I don’t live in the same state but he said he loved the dorm his freshman year. He seems to really like the school.

Are all of the Rice application fee waiver offers based on recent SAT scores? My D emailed them and inquired about the fee waiver & they showed no love. They said she’d have to qualify for the free lunch program at her school to qualify for a fee waiver. She’s a high stats kid, but hasn’t taken any recent tests. So what’s the trick to get that fee waiver?
