Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Has she taken SAT subject tests @LMHS73? S’s Rice fee waiver email mentioned the subject tests, although it also talked about Harvey recovery. So I’m not too sure how much his was storm-related as well; we were not personally affected by the storm but some in S’s school were.

@traveler98 - she took math II (800) & us history (770) but she took those quite a while ago (same with SAT/ACT) which is why I’m thinking they sent a bunch of waivers out based on recent scores. I don’t know - we were just trying to save a few bucks.

UTD told her they’d waive the ApplyTexas fee based on her NMSF status, so we were happy about that!

Seriously?? Top 10% is 7 students at DS school…his rank #8

Aaaahhhhhh

He may move up one more slot in December at half year when he gets his dual enrollment credit, but he will have already applied everywhere.

What a freaking month I’d love to forget! I’m honestly amazed that I have managed not to kick any dogs or punch any walls so far. There’s still time. HS is seriously clueless about NMSF. At least they gave the kids an award breakfast and a generic pin. Most NMSF (4) at the school in years… of course, they gave out bad info about finalist percentages and no info on next steps or anything useful about Florida scholarship info. Ugh. Hope this doesn’t end badly.

Good news though: DS has finally made some progress on his first of many essays. Will likely use it for National Merit and coalition. It’s… progress. Also, progress reports! 1/8th of the way through already! No whammies so far

Fun news: uchicago serendipitously chose now, after NMSF announcements a week ago and 5 months after sending SAT/ACT scores, to send S18 a uchicago tshirt for “sending scores” to them. In the same size as the jacket he got during the visit in July. Hmm. This is big data at work I tell ya. Or they know the world is about to end today anyway so they sent out shirts for the heck of it. #nibiru2017 confirmed

I have a sneaking suspicion that colleges that were really important 2 months ago will start falling off the list and we will be down to 3 or 4 early apps by the end of October. I am taking the under actually. I think I’ll make one last pass through college lists to hopefully find another match level just in case he drops a reach or two. I feel like I’ve said/done this a dozen times before and I still haven’t found it… but once more can’t hurt!

It’s still early, but I think my daughter has a favorite. And it’s the one I like, too.

No jinxing. [-O<

@h0kulani; @Hankster1361; @suzy100 - thank you so much for sharing your thoughts concerning my D’s upcoming WashU visit. Everything looks like a go & a school representative is meeting her at the airport & bringing her to campus. She’s also in contact with her student host who sounds like a great kid.

@suzy100 - when do you plan on visiting campus? My D will be traveling solo (1st week in Oct) for this visit & will be happy to provide a report of her visit from a student’s perspective. Feel free to PM me if you have any particular questions in mind. She’ll be there for 2 days & will visit a couple of classes, have lunch with current students, meet with some school reps, etc.

@LMHS73, we will be there the following week. I’d love to hear a report. We are doing a very quick visit - driving in the night before, interview and then tour and then we will take off - she’s got a commitment here the following morning. I have not been to this campus and I’m looking forward to it!

@suzy100 We have been to WashU 4 times in the last four years. S is interested, but I am an alum and have used his interest as an excuse to get back to campus. It doesn’t sound like you’ll have a ton of time there, but if you have any questions as you plan your trip, I’m happy to help if I can.

Well, S is now legally an adult (for most things anyway). Yesterday morning we ran a 5k race and for the first time he could sign the race waiver himself. @-)

Survived homecoming last night.

It was a lot easier with my younger daughter - her best friend’s mom and I took them to the reservoir for a bunch of pictures, they went for frozen yogurt and then to the dance.

For the older one, more drama-filled. She drove to a friend’s house - she cannot ride in this girl’s car since this girl ditched her at a school concert to hang out with a boy and she had to text me to pick her up. It was definitely the “text me anytime and I will pick you up no questions asked” rule but now I won’t let her accept a ride from her anywhere.

She got ready there and then met us at the reservoir so I could get pictures of both daughters together, and then they drove separately to dinner and the dance. Just seemed to be a really complicated night, but only one minor argument. On the plus side, the poor kid spent four hours on physics before that so I was proud of her.

My S filled out the selective service registration online at the end of August, but never received a letter, should we be concerned?

He set up his FSA ID so we are ready for when FAFSA starts on Oct 1.

I am not sure when D will be home, she doesn’t get a fall break this year.
I might have to have her start the FAFSA and send me the ‘save key’ so I can continue with the parent part.

@traveler98 now that your S is 18, don’t forget that you need him to give you a health care proxy and a power of attorney. And actually the health care proxy might be needed before 18. In AL I’ve needed the health care proxy when my D turned 15 for the insurance company to talk with me.

@melvin123 thanks for the reminder. It was weird for me to no longer be able to get information at doc office until D16 signed form once she turned 18 (she just had to get around to doing it, it wasn’t that she didn’t want to). D18 is turning 18 in December, it’s right around the corner. I’ll check if she’s allowed to sign it early. She has an appointment tomorrow to get meningitis shot.

Finally figured out yesterday why S18 had dropped some schools from his list–they required extra essays. Sigh. The lazy is strong with this one.

I don’t know if it’s so much lazy as just being overwhelmed. My kid is working on six apps (granted, only three are common app and some have extra honors or scholarship apps), and it seems like a mountain. I can’t wrap my head around completing 10+ apps, but obviously lots of kids do it. D’s best friend is working on 12 apps (plus IB, plus two sports) and he’s about to crack.

@Booajo I honestly can understand how your S18 feels, the amount of essays, supplementals etc for both apps and schlolarships is such an added work load for these kids. My D18 has completed her common app and supplementals for one school and one direct app for her top choice. She is holding off on a few right now because they aren’t her top choices and she’s already been accepted to her #1 choice. At this point she’s waiting on Merit consideration, which will come out at the earliest in October but supposedly no later than Thanksgiving. If she doesn’t get what she needs to attend, then she’ll hit send on those other apps over Thanksgiving break. She’s so burned out from her AP course load and her very intense sports season that I have to say; I don’t blame her. I’m sure your boy is in a similar boat.

On another note, my poor kid had a really really rough week. AP Calc BC is kicking her butt; she got into a minor car wreck, then a few days later she got a flat tire, her team had two very tough physical games, she injured her knee and she’s feeling beat up, you name it…this has been a hell week for her. But yesterday two official letters from her #1 choice arrived in the mail. The first was a formal invitation to the Honors College discussing more details on the program. The second was a guaranteed admission to graduate school letter. Just seeing some positivity from her top choice was a huge mental boost that she needed this weekend. Now on to an even tougher week ahead in terms of her athletics; and more importantly let’s hope she can recover from her Calc exam as well haha.

Oh my D18 decided not to do the honors application at her safety because she didn’t like the essay question. I have to agree it is a pretty stupid question. She knows which college she wants to go to and I don’t see any reason they won’t accept her and give her an almost full scholarship as she’s a NMSF and they are one of the schools that give tuition and room scholarships, but sometimes things happen and don’t go as planned so I’m still nervous and our dang HS still hasn’t submitted her transcript so her dang application still isn’t complete even though she submitted it 3 weeks ago now!

D has a friend who was in the same situation. He answered the prompt with one very snarky sentence. ;)) It will be fun to see if he’s accepted. I hope his matches come through for him!

My S18 was accepted to Texas A&M for Physics a few days ago!! He is so excited because this is his #1 choice. We are all doing the happy dance here for him.

Yaaaaaay @trish02’s S! <:-P
