Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

This time a year ago I was imagining DS was going to be applying to at least six or more schools, chasing merit at each one. Now that he is down to three or four, plus the NMSC app, I can see now that is plenty!

After a slow start I think he is now in a pretty good place. Has already applied and been accepted at Louisville and Alabama. Needs to finish honors and scholarship essays. Has a good rough draft. Centre and UK are common app and that is finished except for the essay, which he now has a rough draft of. Has a resume done for schools that are requiring it. NM app is done except for essay also, again another rough draft. He has an English teacher at school is reading his essays and giving him feedback. It sounds like he thinks he will be ready to submit everything in the next two or three weeks (goal is October 15 to have everything submitted).

It seems like there is another shifting in D’s list.

While I was feeling out of the loop, things were happening.

First, medical questions have come up which might take the first choice off the list. It wasn’t completely unexpected but instead of it coming in the form of a rejection as I thought might happen, D decided she should seek medical advice before finalizing the app.

Meanwhile, she is the the middle of a project that has brought her together with a new group of people with shared interests, and this has got her thinking.

With all this going on, she was inspired to write something new and sat down and wrote a new Common App essay effortlessly. I think it’s much better than the one she struggled over and brings out her personality and interests more naturally, in a brighter, more colorful way, if that makes sense. Less dry and stiff. She was even excited to show it to me.

I think the list will become much smaller, keeping the instate safeties and a only couple more which should be safe for admission and affordable and a match for her goals and interests.

Thank you @ShrimpBurrito! He is so happy! :D/

Ugh, I can’t even get mine to finish common app essay.

Congrats, @trish02! Although now I feel like an idiot complaining about physics all the time. 8-}

I have a question. For everyone whose kids are getting acceptances, I assume that’s for schools with rolling admissions. For other schools with a Nov 1 ED/EA deadline, and a Jan X deadline for RD, do the admission committees wait until the day after the deadline and then start reviewing everyone’s? Or do they start as they come in? sorry if this has been asked a bunch before, and is probably school dependent, but I was wondering for the majority.

Congrats on A&M @trish02 !! <:-P

Our son is now finished with his visits. He doesn’t want to say which school is in the lead until acceptances are in. Fordham is the only one I’d call a reach, and that’s due to his GPA. Syracuse may be a low reach as well. He liked his safety (McDaniel) and his solid match (Ithaca).

@bearcatfan we had homecoming last night too. We had issues because D wanted to bring a friend from another school, which is fine, except it meant I had to drive, because this friend doesn’t yet and D hasn’t been driving long enough to drive other teens (a rule I am a stickler for, which her friends routinely break :-S ). Then another friend wanted to host a bunch of girls for a sleepover after the dance. Also fine, except again, D had an outside friend along and we needed to get her home. D’s plan was to have me come get them, drive friend home, then take me home, then she could go to other friend’s house. Only problem was the distances and drive times involved meant that would have her driving after 11pm, which is also a no-no under her provisional DL. [-X That combined with the fact that she was already exhausted and knew she wouldn’t get any sleep at the sleepover, and needed to be productive today, meant she ultimately agreed with my decision that the sleepover wasn’t happening. But good news was, everyone had a great time at the dance, D said it was probably the best one she’s been to!

Congratulations on the acceptances!

The 18 birthday info is very interesting. My son turns 18 Friday. I knew about selective service and that he has to register as an adult at Mass. I did NOT know about health care proxies. Thanks!

D’s been trigger-happy this weekend with the college apps! Grinnell, Trinity, Barrett, McGill scholarship, and NMF apps are all in now. #:-S

Three more to go. She’s “not feeling” the UBC essays. Toronto’s app isn’t up yet (she’s decided she does want to do that one after all). And USC is finished but she’s nervous to hit Submit. Seriously high stakes there.

Hi @melvin123, I have the same question as I am new to this whole process with my first born. The schools that D selected has ED and EA of Nov 1 and the rest of rest has a Jan X deadline.

TIA for all your responses.

Anymore I think the colleges do as they damn well please.

One of DD’s schools has a December 1 deadline for her program. But they are scheduling interviews in November and December. If you get it in by December 1, that leaves exactly one day to interview in December. She’s had her application in for a while, but it seems to me application review will start sooner than the December deadline in order to haul people in for interviews in November. They said in their open house application review begins in September for this program, but we’ve heard nothing. So, it’s conceivable someone getting it in by the deadline is “late.”

That is the only program like that she’s applied to, so maybe it’s an outlier.

I have to clarify my last post, but it’s past the edit stage … There are several dates in December, and one date in January for interviews. But there are several dates in November, before the deadline. So who knows.

@bearcatfan Thanks! No worries… when he talks about physics, my eyes glaze over =))

@apraxiamom Health care proxies? I can’t find the post to which you are referring… my S18 turned 18 last week. Sounds like I have something else to add to our list. Do you mind telling me a little more about what it is? Thanks!

It was in post 7291. I don’t know myself, but it’s probably the power to speak to doctors on my son’s behalf.

Health care power of attorney might be a term you are more familiar with. Most adults should have one. It designates someone who can make healthcare decisions for you should you be unable to do so for yourself. Depending on state law, things can get sticky without one.

Your child will need to choose one person- an interesting choice when my older son chose my husband instead of me. He figured I’d be too emotional.

There is also a HIPAA form your child can fill out that allows healthcare providers to share info with you.

Medical Power of Attorney, for Healthcare.

You can Google the forms based on your state.
Basically it allows you to receive information as well as make medical decisions on your young adults behalf in the event they are unable too.

Example: Your young adult is in an accident and is unconscious, the hospital cannot tell you anything due to privacy laws but with the healthcare release they can tell you what is going on as well as allow you to make decisions.

I printed the form, DD took it to school where two friends who were also 18 witnessed it. This occurred one day during physics class.

The other option is a notary, the two witnesses was easier.

I have one for each adult kid as my DS is still single and prefers we still have that power.

Once complete scan or photo to your phone so that you always have it for any purpose whether it be an emergency or you’re trying to get information about a RX.

When DD had her wisdom teeth out the pharmacist would only speak with “her” regarding meds. “Her” was at home in a drug induced stupor, I pulled up the document on my phone and voila, access.

Both kids signed forms at their doctors /dentists that made things easier for me to access as well.

Does anyone know how to see your order history for SAT scores, ie which colleges you’ve already had them sent to? I cannot locate this information for the life of me. Apologies if this has been asked & answered already, I’m a few hundred posts behind!

ETA - Just found it: https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/viewscore/scoresends if anyone else needs it!
