Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@DiotimaDM Im sorry your S is suffering through a breakup. Was he very serious about the girl? If he was, the only consolation is that he’s experiencing this while he’s home with you, and you can give him some support through this.

I don’t have any old car stories. I get rid of them around 115,000, just before the timing belt and tires need replacing. Shortly after my D was born my then car turned 120,000 and I put all that money into it. Over the next 10,000 miles I put in another $5,000 in various repairs. I swore, never again. And it was a Camry, who would have thought?

I always buy Toyota’s: so dependable and sturdy, DH has a Honda that my mom sold him a few years ago. S18 doesn’t have a car.

Speaking of S18: he IS 18 today! He’s grown up so fast!

Happy FAFSA weekend everyone!

We finally so!d our 1990 Corolla (bought in 1990 with almost 100K miles) over the summer. We replaced it with a 2002 Accord. Our newest car is a 2006 Pontiac Vibe, and S18 has a 1994 Saturn that belonged to my inlaws. My wife and I each have a motorcycle. S16 has no interest in driving.

@SnowflakeDogMom Mine is a 2002 Odyssey, too. You have given me hope that it will last for a few more years!

We’ll have to come back to this topic when our kids graduate college to see if our vans make it through.

@apraxiamom Happy Birthday to your S!

Gotta love those Hondas!

S was thinking about getting serious with the girl, yes. I don’t want to go too far into their private business, but we both suspect that there’s something going on - stress, depression, maybe - where she gets blah about everything (where blah is code for flat affect). Anyhow, they didn’t fight; things just fizzled, but only on her end.

We’ll see. Things turn out how they’re supposed to turn out. It’s just hard to see in the short run sometimes.

Anyhow, I made him a comfort food dinner tonight, and we went out for milkshakes yesterday.

I love Hondas and Toyotas, and I’m loyal to them. My brother in law, an engineer with a mechanic’s heart, also loves Subarus (although I guess that’s in the Toyota family).

Our cars right now are not high mileage despite their ages - a 2004 Honda Accord (129,000) and a 2007 Toyota Sienna (108,000). The Honda, especially, has been showing its age in terms of parts needing replaced because they just wear out. We plan on keeping the Honda for an around-town car for the teens. When my husband needs to go out of town, he rents a car - it’s cheaper than a car payment. We baby both cars, and always get the scheduled maintenance (which can get expensive for Toyotas and Hondas).

I still miss my 1993 Accord - that body style is more attractive to me than what they are making now. My husband finally traded in his 1987 Accord hatchback to buy the 2004.

When I am done with college payments I am splurging on new flooring in the kitchen and dining room. It hasn’t aged as well as the cars, lol.

D hit send for two colleges last night. Yay! She still needs to write many supplemental essays for her other colleges though.

How long after pressing send do we wait to send score reports?

And btw, I have NO idea what I would do without you fine folks and all of your helpful knowledge!

We have some older vehicles too. One is a Nissan, which may not have the longevity of Honda/Toyota. I was getting worried about them hitting 70k but now you all have given me hope that they have a lot of life left. Biggest problem with the 2002 Honda (76k) is rust. We don’t have a garage to keep them in.

@bearcatfan , that’s interesting about renting a car. Yes, certainly cheaper than a car payment!

@Kayak24 Send those test scores ASAP just to get them done - they somehow match up at the school and are added to the electronic file. We hit “submit” and sent test scores the same day. It does take the college board a few days to get it done. I think it might have taken no more than a week to show up as “received.”

I am hoping that my van makes it through inspection for another year, to bring D’s stuff home for the summer. She is moving off campus next year. S might not bring that much stuff, although the instruments will need room.

No fancy car for me. Two in college for a few more years, and once the house is paid off, we need to do some much needed improvements.

Plus the salt kills the cars here and we have no garage.

Hey, I can brag too, our 2006 car only has about 80,000 miles on it. If the frame holds up ok we should be able to drive it a while yet.

@Kayak24 I agree, order the score reports now.

I checked collegeboard and we ordered and paid for score report on 7/25 and it shows as sent on 8/1, not sure how long it then takes fof the school to receive it.

With many Nov deadlines things will be busy in October

Ah, the power of a visiting Admissions Officer! My DD just met with one visiting her school yesterday and a school I thought was a dark horse now shot way way up the list. He must have really given her a great sales pitch is all I can say!

@snowflakedogmom, Your post made me smile. I’m 57 and have had 3 cars (all white - I like white cars, at least in the absence of pretty colored-: 1974 Ford Thunderbird, 1987 Chevy Nova (I cried when we donated that one, but it didn’t feel safe with little ones in the car and crazed minvans and SUVs roaming the world), and now my 2003 Odyssey, still going strong although not as pretty as it might be. I will cry when it goes, too.

And on sending scores: if I had known how the ACT sticks it to you on score fees, I might have made my son take the SAT instead. I still had to pay to send SAT subject scores and could have saved a bundle.

Oh my gosh, @twinsmama !! The gouging on the ACT! It is unreal! S18 is sending two sets of scores to 12 schools. It was an outrageous amount of money!

Do you guys mean the $13 per school for ACT? What does SAT charge?

@MACmiracle
Does your oddy have original transmission? Our trans went bad early on but was under the warranty and Honda replaced. Now that the van is older, the transmission, while working fine in general, has issues with the extreme heat here. The day it stranded us was because it got so hot the fluid was toast and it could not shift up. We towed it home, mechanic did a complete flush and its been fine ever since but I don’t trust it for long hauls.

SAT charges $12 per score report. But I was able to send the Jan and June scores together in one report.

I think with ACT each sitting score is sent separately?

Some schools require all scores.

SAT2 scores are in 760 in Math 2. DS was hoping for an 800. I don’t think we will waste our money sending the 760. It’s still a good score, but won’t help or hurt his application. None of his schools require SAT2 so he was mainly doing it to boost his application for scholarships.
