Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I noticed the following statement on the CA Application Submission Page for Vanderbilt:

“I affirm that I will send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to only one institution; sending multiple deposits (or equivalent) may result in the withdrawal of my admission offers from all institutions.”

Then the student has to electronically sign the form acknowledging that he/she understands the above statement.

To be honest, I don’t know if I even paid attention to the check boxes in submission pages for the other schools she’s applied to. We may have just checked all of the boxes & then D signed the forms.

Like someone suggested, best to check the policy for each school.

@suzy100 I’m trying. I’m trying. ~X( I’ll continue to [-O<

Worst case scenario, she loses out on her REA and EA’s. And goes RD. She knows the consequences. I keep telling her to practice the following line: “Can I supersize those fries for you?” =))

@LMHS73 I looked into that a little bit (via Google). It’s more an ethical thing than a legal thing.

It appears that only applies to holding multiple deposits after May 1 (the final date to tell colleges). In other words, you are buying yourself more time to make a college decision by telling a couple of them you are DEFINITELY coming after the refundable date even though you can only attend one. After that May date, they are deciding class sizes, wait lists, etc. If you ask for a refund before May 1, it appears to be okay. The exception is if you are waiting on a wait list decision, and put down a deposit somewhere while you are waiting to hear.

Of course, it’s fair to everyone to tell the colleges before that date. But, from what I could tell, that statement (which apparently has been on the CA for a couple years) is referring to the magic May date.

I will be glad when a final decision is made here, too.

@1822mom - wonderful essay news! So happy to hear your D made it over the hump.

@LMHS73 - geez we haven’t paid much attention to all those submission page statements. D’s been so excited to submit It’s just check, check, check ok we’re good to go! D submitted Vandy earlier this week so good to know.I don’t necessarily agree with placing numerous deposits so it shouldnt come into play for us but I think we’ll read the fine print going forward.

We attended a college fair this week. I know, late in the game, but D’s real motivation was hey, this is one more way to demonstrate interest in my #1 school. They’re a top 20, admit rate in the teens so very competitive. She’s talked to the rep a few times over the last year at various recruiting events but figured it can’t hurt to go again. We walked in, there was a looooooong line at the table, but the rep caught sight of D from afar and gave her a big smile and friendly wave :open_mouth: You should have seen D’s jaw drop, oh wow she recognized ME. It was like Bruno Mars had just given her a shoutout LOL. Cloud 9. Not exactly an admissions offer but certainly made her day B-)

@Veronica02 I love that story! I love that the admissions rep recognized her, and that it meant so much to your D. I’m really rooting for her.

And great news, @1822mom! :D/

@verbal572 Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

So cool that the rep recognized her!

My D had an interview with a regional rep for one school, and that rep knew that D had been in contact with the music department and what had been discussed. We were impressed enough by that, though it was surely just entered into a database. But she took the time to look it up!

Besides the stress, and the worry about system slowdowns and crashes close the deadline, the other reason I want my D to get her first app in early is that the school process to get their stuff in is kind of murky right now. My D did her whole long HS process, but I am really eager to get access to the school portal for the school with the 11/1 deadline so we can see whether any of this stuff has really gone through. Then we can start bugging the HS if not. It’s not clear to me whether any of this stuff is waiting for D to submit her part or has already been submitted, or what.

Our GCs urge all students to apply to one early decision/action or rolling just to have one acceptance under their belt to build confidence.

Naturally, my DD rejected that advice and is only doing RD applications, of which 0 are submitted.

Yes. Higher than expected.
Previous = 1350
New= 1550
S prepared online @ Khan , and topped his highest practice test.

Very excited about Pitt .

@Veronica02 what a great story! Sounds like your D has done a great job demonstrating interest in that school!

Welcome @seansdad and congrats on your S improved score!

@daffodilpetunia I have the same worry about the school side of things. It’s been a very murky, poorly communicated process thus far. What I know, however, is that nothing has been submitted yet, everything in Naviance still shows as “requested”. D’s job this week is to darken the door of the GC and find out what the hold up is because we know he has everything. Her IB coordniator, who would normally be acting as GC, wrote her letter and everything, but passed it off to the GC who will be handling stuff for D as the IB coordinator is now off on maternity leave until January. So, we know everything was prepared, but we don’t know what happened to it and D needs to follow up. My nightmare is the stuff was misplaced and now she’s gone so it will all have to be redone by this other person on short notice. :-SS

Part of the issue was D had spoken to the people involved, but no one told her she needed to also put her request through Naviance, so she didn’t get that done until later, I think if she had done that right away, it might have already been done, but communication has been completely ridiculous. D has to go in and ask for every step she takes, and typically she asks a question, and just that question is answered, there is no follow up to say, yes you will need to do this and also this, and this is the process for that. So she misses things and then has to go back and ask a new question, and the process repeats, over and over. It’s a good thing we started in September! It’s been very frustrating.

Of course part of it is that I am staying out of that part of it completely, and D is terrible at anticipating the next question. I will tell her she needs to find out X, and she will just ask X and not think beyond that. ~X( Just a couple more weeks, right?

@seansdad another hopeful Pitt kid here. It’s my D’s #1 choice. She was accepted in mid September but the wait for merit is excruciating. Congrats on your son’s excellent SAT. He should be in line for good merit. My daughter submitted her 34 ACT to Pitt which translates to a 1520 SAT I think. Best of luck!

S is working on supplemental essays for 3 more schools with 11/1 EA deadlines, hoping to submit tomorrow night.

His team lost a hard fought game in the post season tournament last night. They actually went farther than expected, but still his last ever game after 12 years in the sport. He walked off the field, came over and hugged me and his dad, and said, “Thank you guys for everything you’ve done to support me playing [this sport] all these years. Love you both.” Made me tear up.

Thanks and best of luck back at you . S has 4.5 GPA, #2 in Class of 280. Lot of AP , Honors
I just found this board recently and will be following .

I saw an earlier post regarding EFA - 1 year amount or is that for 4 Years ? I know that feeling . Well… i did a double take when i re-checked some Tuition Calcs today . !!! Seems higher everytime I look…

Pitt was way down on S’s List - before he had visited anywhere .
I pushed him to visit Carnegie-Mellon and check Pitt while there …

Did NOT like CM - ecstatic about PITT !

Visited Lehigh , U of Penn , NOVA [daughters school] , Drexel , and have a few more to checkout .

But, Pitt is # 1 , by far .

hope you + D get a great result + SOON!

@AmyBeth68 when do you think they’ll let you know the financial package? Fingers crossed for you.

Cap and gown is HOW much? Do we buy a class ring? What the heck is a mascot tassel? Graduation announcements…already? Check the college portals…recommenders still haven’t completed their part? Do we really need to send AP scores now? Why are they asking for transcripts when it says they’ve already received them? Do you really want to fill out that last college application?

Knee-deep in it today. :((

@melvin123 Thanks…hoping before Thanksgiving to see the package. We’re OOS so we really need it. But judging by CC the kids being accepted have super high stats. Merit will be competitive for sure! She has a few more apps waiting decisions…but Pitt is her clear favorite.

@seansdad same here…Pitt jumped to the top after our summer visit. She was very impressed with all aspects of the university. As were her father and I. Our kids are so similar! 4.55 weighted 4.0 UW. 6/291. Etc. She’s going for double major in Econ and Russian. Here’s hoping both of them get a nice financial package.

On the sports front D’s team is headed to states this week. Their season has been phenomenal. I love your post @gclsports . What a special moment. I’m not ready for that final walk off

Welcome, @seansdad ! Congratulations on the SAT score! Mine’s retaking the test in November. He has a 1310 right now. He’s been accepted to Franciscan and has EA applications at 2 other colleges. We’re also OOS.

Thanks, @apraxiamom . Best wishes…

I am really hoping to hear something on financial aid before January, but I have a feeling I’ll be waiting a while. We have heard about merit, but I hope there is more to come.

We are waiting (hate that word, lol) to hear about some honors colleges and/or scholarship days. The next thing is an interview next weekend for her program at one of her top 3. We bought nice shoes for it this weekend, lol.

So, she’s in more or less at two of her top three- one direct admit into into nursing, one into the university but waiting on nursing until January. We think she is in at the university that wants an interview, but they haven’t announced anything and we won’t hear about nursing until January. She’s direct admit at another school, which is way back in fourth place and probably not a factor.

The other three she doesn’t care about anymore - one she is direct admit, one she has to wait until MARCH and the other one she kind of hated from the beginning. So she does have some choices, but the weird thing is the top three are as different from one another as can be. Of course. 8-}

@bearcatfan the Tom Petty (RIP) song “The Waiting” comes to mind for so many of us here!!! Sounds like she is really organized though and lots of good news thus far. Funny about her top 3…opposite w/ my D…hers are so similar in many ways aside from campus. But all are 3 big state research universities lol. She did have a few odd ones in the top for a while but they’ve fallen SO far back at this point.

I can not emphasized enough how important these connections are. My daughter has met a few reps this past yea. At many of these visits, she only went just to say hello and to gather more information. The same reps have visited her school and know her by name. They even have her cell phone number and send her reminders about whatever might pertain their schools

These regional reps actually get to see the application themselves. and they get to see who is applying from their territory… They know everything that is going on. One of the reps who visited her school even asked her “I have not seen your application. When are you planning to apply?” When she was admitted, she got a text with a congratulations and a reminder about the Dean of Honors coming to town . Amazing!

Here is another situation. About 6 weeks ago, she received a phone call from an admissions officer at the one of the Universities. She believes he was a current student at the school. She had already met the local rep at one of the regional fairs. He was basically following up with her to see if she was still interested in applying to school. She did not even know who was calling since she did not recognize the phone number. But she was funny and charming in answering all the questions. She applied about two weeks after the phone call and she just found out over the weekend that she was accepted to the University and to the highly competitive School of Management… Did any of this play a part? We will number know, but I can not imagine that it hurt her.

My point here is to make sure these kids get to know these reps.I honestly believe that they can make a difference. Obviously, the student has to have the merit to get into a particular school. However, there are so many of variables that goes into this process that it is impossible to predict why a 26 ACT gets you into highly competitive school and why a 34 ACT does not. Get to know the reps!!! By the end of the day, many decisions could come down to finances. Could a phone call to one of these reps make a difference in getting more Merit or aid from a school? I do not know the answer yet, but having a relationship might make a difference if the reps likes the student

She wants to be a business major and i keep reminding her that all starts with relationships.
