Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I thought collges cannot see the list of colleges you send the fafsa to anymore. They used to be able to see that earlier but it now they can’t.

Let me get this in before the offers start to arrive

in my opinion

LOANS ARE NOT FINANCIAL AID!!!

You are not aiding my finances by facilitating long term debt. Any school that tries to sneak a big fat parent loan into their package and then BRAG about it as meeting xx% need is running a scam. Can I get an AMEN?

@JerseyParents Amen.

Amen!

@JerseyParents Amen!

@mommdc , @melvin123 , @Kayak24 , thanks for your help and advice. I called the school and checked with the guidance office.

I also called one of the colleges–and it turns out they need her app asap because of an upcoming scholarship competition!!! The admissions rep said not to worry about LORs because of her good GPA and SAT scores. She can submit anything that’s required for scholarships later, but for admission, she is good to go. I’m so glad I called. The blessing of a less selective school.

Also, the transcript person at the guidance office was truly kind and wonderful and asked for the names of any colleges D wanted transcripts sent to, not just the priority deadlines I was worried about. There is a typical process that D will get a break on because her medical situation prevents her from being at school for a few days and doing any work for a few more days after that. I was so grateful. She even talked me into having D apply to the one I thought we had to drop, because it’s a free app. She’ll reach out for the LORs, too.

Then D signed onto the college board website so I could order scores. It was all free because we got an SAT fee waiver. I was afraid it was going to be additional expense, so it was a nice surprise.

Once D signed into the Common App, I could look at it in full before she hit submit. I can’t tell you how thankful I am that she had it all done before the injury.

D is not supposed to look at screens at all now, so all she can do us sign in and click submit as I read aloud to her. It’s been interesting, but we’ve accomplished a lot.

I felt bad for even asking her questions like, “Do you want to submit all scores or just you best one?” because I wasn’t sure. In the end we just went with the various colleges’ recommendations.

She has done enough for today. Now she is listening to an audiobook which the doctor said is okay.

Whew! Thanks, friends!

@MACmiracle It sounds like you two had a good day. It’s always encouraging to see those during times like these. I hope your D and your family hang in there… we’re thinking of you all :slight_smile:

@MACmiracle Yes, 4 score reports should be free if using a SAT fee waiver. And for any non common app schools that aren’t free apps, she should have 4 application fee waivers to use too in her Collegeboard account.

I am glad you reached out to the GC and college and they were so helpful!

Oh, and I think the SAT score report includes all previous scores unless you specifically exclude them.

I could cry. I just looked at the CC thread for one of my son’s top choice schools and he filled out his application incorrectly and it is submitted and cannot be changed.

It is for Cal Poly SLO and he didn’t input his middle school courses he took into his 9th grade course listing, so it looks like he never took Algebra. Apparently this is a snag/tripping point for a ton of kids and it results in them not getting in because Algebra is required for entry into their programs and they don’t take into account that if you are in Calculus, etc, you probably took Algebra. It also means he won’t have the higher MCA score that other kids will have because he left off Algebra and Spanish 1 so he won’t get the points for that.

Not only that, the course he took that covered Algebra wasn’t called Algebra and wasn’t an option to add to his high school transcript (only the Spanish course was available to add) so they will never see Algebra. I’m calling them, but I’m heartbroken right now that he might miss out on one of his top colleges because of a silly thing like them not being able to infer that he took Algebra 1 if he has taken Geometry, Algebra 2, and two years of IB math . . .

@RoonilWazlib99 I saw that thread too. And since my D hasn’t turned in even 1 application yet, I’ve made a note of that issue, so we hopefully don’t miss that detail. Is it just Algebra or is it Geometry too? My D took both Algebra and Geometry in middle school. Do we have to provide CP SLO with a middle school transcript?

One of the very few benefits of procrastination.

D is still screwing around with essays and now plans to submit REA and EA apps by Monday 10/30. ~X(

@sushiritto - she needs to list ALL middle school courses that are typically high school courses. I didn’t even think about it because in our district, taking basic math, which was called Math Path 1 when he was in middle school, was the way you finished Algebra. Only if you were in Geometry or Algebra 2 in 8th grade were you considered to be taking high school courses (also probably why Algebra wasn’t an option to go on his HS transcript - they didn’t consider it a high school course).

@RoonilWazlib99 big hugs to you. This seems unconscionable that this can’t be changed, particularly because the deadline isn’t here yet. I’m hoping that the school will let you submit a supplement or something that will fix this. Again, hugs.

@RoonilWazlib99 , is this only for Cal Poly? Do you have to self report for Cal Ploy? D also has some colleges that need self reporting (not Cal Poly) and she did not report Algebra 1 , Geometry and Spanish 1 as she took those in middle school. Our School transrcipt also does not show those courses if they were taken in middle school.

So I just called - they confirmed that he will be missing two semesters of Spanish and two semesters of math, which will put him behind the 8 ball when it comes to admissions, especially to ME. They did, however, say, that when they verify grades/requirements that they do assume Algebra has been taken if the student is in higher-level math in high school, so that’s good.

He also confirmed that the Cal Poly admit system is “highly automated” in that the students are just assigned a score and cut-offs are made that way via an automated system. He said the admissions counselors then “verify” things later, but for the most part, no one is “reading” applications to make decisions; it is more to confirm that the computer was right. :frowning: That doesn’t help him at all.

Big hugs to you @RoonilWazlib99. It’s truly awful that the school is being so inflexible about this. I saw something about the issue and I think it happened last year too. How in the world did they not fix that??!! Anyway, I truly hope they will work with you.

@RoonilWazlib99 in my opinion this is a big issue with the CSU Apply Now App - the instructions to include these classes taken in middle school under 9th grade is under the general instructions on the website but it is NOT found on the actual application or the specific “Program Material”/supplemental for SLO - how hard can it be to flag this on the actual application! I’m sure tons of kids will miss out on the extra MCA points as a result.

@Pri930 - I don’t know about other schools. I think all the other ones S18 applied to that required self-reporting had space for middle school courses.

@suzy100 - They said there is nothing they can do. And that the process is automated so he will just miss out on the extra points for those two semesters (250 points!!). It’s crushing.

I guess just cross your fingers that the applicant pool for ME this year isn’t stellar so he has a chance. :frowning:

@RoonilWazlib99 That just stinks all the way around. Could he withdraw his application and submit a new one? I’m reaching for straws here, but I can’t believe this can’t be modified as it’s before the deadline. So sorry! Of all the worries, this is one that our kids shouldn’t have to deal with!

Beloit is well know for being generous with merit aid to middle to upper middle class families. My kids list is very similar to yours. All I can say is the key to national Liberal Arts Schools is a personal visit. Stay overnight do interviews with professors if at all possible. Think of it as your kid is selling their unique perspective to the school. They will give you the $$$ if they like the perspective student. Negotiate . I found out that some of the school that say no merit aid actually do give merit aid they just call it something else, "trustee scholarship, sally smith grant for upstanding students from po dunk …
