Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

consider that if he goes to a more elite undergrad it is much more likely that he will not pay anything for grad school at a big state school. If he is doing STEM he should get a stipend at grad school after a BS from MIT or the like. Even school’s like Coe get 100% free tuition for their BS grad to get in Phd program in Chem, geo, physics etc.

@RoonilWazlib99 , wow that really sucks. Hopefully they do the personal verification and give him the points he deservs. My D also hasn’t listed those courses and the applications are submitted, so I will just not worry about it now.

Ugh, that’s awful about the middle school courses. Here, at least, those courses are listed on the high school transcript.

Just what these poor kids need, jeez.

That sucks @RoonilWazlib99! It sucks that something so critical isn’t spelled out very well and it sucks that you can’t fix it even though there’s time before the deadline. Hopefully he gets accepted anyway.

@RoonilWazlib99 could you submit a transcript from middle school? Or is that not allowed because it was not self reported in the first place?

^^I was going to suggest the same thing, except see if the GC can submit it? Do they request that the GC submit a school transcript?

^^ transcripts for CSU’s aren’t submitted until admitted and after high school grades are in. SLO has been pretty rigid re correcting an application but maybe if enough people complain about the app’s clarity they would do more.

@Jerseyparents AMEN,Hallelujah!
@RoonilWazlib99 boo, hiss, that stinks.

Yay, to all the kiddos hitting submit buttons!

We are still firmly ensconced in the denial department for completing scholarship stuff. Need to look at it this weekend for sure.

DD spoke to me briefly this morning (she had a late arrival day this morning) about feeling a bit stressed/anxious. She said that she appreciated that I have been pushing her to be ahead of the curve but she is feeling stressed about it all. Things seem to be moving way too fast and what seemed like such a far off event (senior year, graduation, college) is feeling overwhelming at the moment.

I am so sorry for your situation @RoonilWazlib99 :frowning: I agree that it should be something that’s fixable. But more critically, I would be miffed with the middle/high school for not properly documenting kids on that math pathway as taking Algebra, especially in CA, when it so clearly puts them at a disadvantage in the admissions process later! Grrr! But I am going to choose to believe that things will work out as they should and your son will be admitted regardless of this snafu! Positive thinking! >:D<

OK, so BIG news here people: D has hit submit on her EA app due 11/1!!! <:-P <:-P <:-P The other 5 are ready to go as well, she’s just giving them a few more days to “cook” , they aren’t due until 11/15.

You all know this has been a rough, rough road to this point, and the last few feet was no exception. This week, she was determined to figure out what was going on with the counselor rec stuff. It turned out to be a good thing she did. So, when she started her common app back in August, she listed her IB coordinator as her counselor because that is who typically handles those duties for IB kids, then upon discovering that the IBC was leaving for maternity leave in Oct, she was told to put one of the regular counselors in, as he would be handling things for her. This was the counselor listed for her in Naviance, so she changed the info in her Common App to match that counselor. Strangely, when she had a copy of her transcript printed, I noticed that yet another counselor was listed as her counselor on the transcript, but thought nothing of it as that was the head counselor so perhaps all transcripts list him? So yesterday, D hears from a friend who has an ED deadline and was also going to be absent for several days just prior to the deadline, that counseling is having trouble with Naviance. Ah ha! I have heard about troubles with Naviance, so perhaps we don’t need to worry. Now, today, D is called to counseling where the head counselor, the guy listed on her transcript, not her CA or Naviance, tells her he has submitted everything for her and she is all set! Great! She tells me this when she gets home, ready to hit submit and I say, wait do you need to update the counselor info again? She checks Naviance and sure enough, it has changed to this other counselor, so she makes the change in the CA, and hits submit! #:-S I really hope they don’t make any more changes to her counselor this year!!

The last step is actually the teacher rec, which D followed up on and it was promised by Friday, so hopefully we’re in the waiting game now!

Edited to add: hugs to your D @labegg I think my D often feels overwhelmed and stressed as well. It’s a tough transition for sure.

@MACmiracle - so sorry to hear of your DD’s injury - get well soon!

@Astro77 - I would agree with what has already been said: some of the benefits to the Honors college are preferential registration for core courses, core courses with fewer students - usually seminars, access to Honors dorms. It is not uncommon for many students in our state flagship to matriculate in the Honors College, take all their cool honors core courses and then drop the Honors designation and just complete their majors, absent all the hassles of fighting to register for core courses.

S18 is thinking about submitting a last-minute app, Georgia State, to have an instate option. … he fully intends to go to his tied-for-number-one colleges, but Georgia State also has linguistics and is located in an international city: Atlanta.

Grr…the Rock and Roll marathon will be shutting off neighborhood streets ON SAT DAY 11/4!

Congratulations on everyone hitting submit today!

D got her first acceptance letter today from UT Dallas !!

That’s the safety & we knew she’d get in, but she was genuinely excited when she read the letter.

A vote for checking over the applications before hitting submit. D18 had been wondering why she hadn’t heard back from in-state safety when all her friends had, so her GC sent a message to admissions. Well, she applied for Fall 2017, not Fall 2018. Sigh. Thankfully, they rolled her application fee over and she just needed to resubmit. But, seriously.

It’s kind of strange that they still have Fall 2017 as a choice to select.

Ix-nay on Georgia State. We’ve decided to hold off, based on further research. If S needs a Georgia safety, we can look at schools later this spring.

@RoonilWazlib99 I have to say the same thing happened to my D…she has not reported her Algebra 1 Honors on both of the SRAR apps that she already submitted. She filled out using her High School transcript which only listed the courses taken during HS. The only consolation I can give you is that she did in fact get accepted already to one of the two so hopefully they assumed based on the fact that she’s taken every other possible math course through Calc BC (currently). That is so heartbreaking and frustrating…we totally understand! I hope this somehow has a happy resolution for you.

@AmyBeth68 - I wouldn’t be worried if it were an actual human reading the application. It’s strictly an automated points system, though, so he will have 250 points less than most kids and they just admit the top kids based on points, at least according to what I understand from what I have read.

@RoonilWazlib99 ugh that is awful. So rigid. Hope it somehow works out.
Congrats to all the people who are hitting submit! Big congrats @LMHS73!!

@RoonilWazlib99 OMG I somehow missed that. I am SO incredibly sorry, that’s just so unfair and heartbreaking.

I have to hand it to Mississippi State, they have been exceedingly persistent with DD2018, at least every other day for several months now. I am thoroughly impressed with the diversity and sheer volume of the mailers.

Last week Texas State called, twice. Wanted to know why she had not finished her application, She started her Apply TX app for them but did not hit submit because of the $70 app fee. First call was from a student. She told them she was no longer interested and the next call was from an Admission’s Officer. Which I found surprising. Not sure what they can know from her app other than her contact info…

Nothing seems to prompt a phone call like an unfinished application. It happened with DD2018 too. She completed but did not hit submit on her Common App for Marquette because she felt it was a long shot. They called and asked what they could do to persuade her to submit the application…I guess it was just a phone call, lol, because she did submit it shortly after that phone call. Low and behold that is where she is now!

So, honestly it makes me wonder information is accessible and what prompts a personal phone call. I always feel like there are some bits of information about this whole college application process that we, the public, just are not privy too that somehow changes the playing field.
