Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

If you drive, yes. But “cheap” flights make most of CA accessible in about 75-90 minutes.

@AmyBeth68 I’m so sorry to hear your D is struggling. Yes, hopefully with her sport wrapping up, she’ll be able to focus on Calc more. Calc is hard! My D has some friends in her sport who are a step ahead of her in math, so she confers with them periodically to make sure she really understands her Calc assignments. She swears by Khan Academy, also.

I hope your D can quickly get back on track. I’m sure this is stressful for you, as well. Hugs.

On a different subject, D got the best mailing ever today from U Chicago. It empathizes with how difficult life is now, with applications and schoolwork and whatnot, so here’s a picture of a cute kitten to cheer you up. Timely!

Interesting… from our home in the San Diego area, the furthest CSU (Humboldt State) is more than a 12-hour drive. That makes ASU seem downright local.

@AmyBeth68 try to tell your D not to worry!
Can she work with a classmate in AP calc or a tutor to go over things that are unclear?

With her strong junior grades and scores I don’t think Pitt will ask for first semester grades (and she is already accepted), and she has plenty of time to bring her grade up to a B by the end of the year.

As for other schools, does your high school report first semester grades to all colleges applied to?

@mommdc I don’t think they do report 1st MP grades…but that’s a good question? She is 1 point shy of a B-…she had a solid B until today’s grade and they think there will be at least one more quiz this MP so there’s hope to bring it back up to where it was. I have lined up a tutor for her…it’s so weird she just got 100 on a quiz then struggled with a 2 part test…bombed part 1 got a B+ on Part 2 so she’s getting some things…but then struggling elsewhere. I’m not sure what the disconnect is. My feeling is if she can just hang on to a B- it won’t impact her overall grades much at all with 7 other classes all A+ practically and most AP. So she just needs to hobble through this one class. I calculated her GPA even with the C+ and it barely changes. She’s more worried about losing her class ranking but I’m sure other kids are struggling with classes too. She’s just SO worried about Pitt…and of course the waiting game for Merit is stressing her out LOL!

@bacmom, can you contact Collegeboard and see if they can report the scores for EBRW and math, without essay? Yes, and reach out to the schools.

It has been posted on CC before that people had problems with getting scores sent on time. Even with rush service, it is just very busy before Nov 1.

So several posters recommended a while ago to send scores a few weeks before the deadline.

@bacmom, I’d do as mommdc suggests. I may go so far as taking a screenshot of the scores and then emailing them to the school. I’d contact them first to see if that would work, but it might!

@AmyBeth68, hugs to your D. I think she’ll be OK - you’ve been given some great suggestions here.

@Amybeth68 I’m sure she will be fine, it is only the end of October!
The schools will be basing her admission and merit on the GPA and scores reported when she applied.

I know some student posters report that their high school sends mid year reports automatically. But not all schools do.

Now that her sport is done, with some help in understanding key concepts, I am confident that she will raise that grade back up.

Not many kids even take AP Calc BC.

What is she hoping to major in?

@AmyBeth68 - you took my advice already (getting the tutor) before I gave it!! In junior year, my D got a C in 1st semester of AP Calc BC. It turns out that she was involved in a science competition that consumed all of her time & classwork was put on the back burner that semester. I set-up a meeting with D, her math teacher, & counselor and we all agreed that D would attend after-school tutoring sessions with her teacher. In addition, she teamed-up with one of the more advanced kids in her class to work on assignments & homework together. She worked really hard & got an A in the second semester & that shows upward progression after her little stumble, so I think she’ll come out OK. She even mentioned her “lesson learned” from this experience in a couple of her admissions essays.

With your D’s sport ending, that will (hopefully) free-up some more time for her to work with the tutor & get a 2nd semester grade of B or higher.

Best wishes to your D!!

These kids are under so much pressure. Give her a big hug - if she’ll allow it
It will all work out in the end

@bacmom - Her EA application will be fine. So long as she submitted her application on time and requested her SAT’s on time, she will be fine. The schools don’t require the SAT on November 1st. They will get the official report from College Board in time to complete the review of her application.

@AmyBeth68 I think a lot of us are in the same boat. There’s just too much on these kids plates right now. I think a meeting with the teacher is one of the most important things. Maybe the teacher can stretch out an assignment or two for her and help put together a plan for her to get back on the right track.

@AmyBeth68 Collaborative groups seem to help my kids. Provide food (or make it a potluck) and they will come.

S18 received notification from one of his schools that his application was forwarded to the Honors College at the school for review for entry into their program. Trying not to put too much stock in that, but it has to be a good sign, right?

It’s a regular decision app he submitted a week ago (due date not until December), so he won’t hear until Feb/March, but it’s still nice to get some sort of response from a school. I know I’ve said it before, but I really hate the waiting!

Woohoo! My girl is going to college! Got her first acceptance today

S’18 hit submit on an 11/15 app. He’ll be applying to 9 in total, plus at least one long shot scholarship. He now has 4 submitted and the next one is due 12/1. Feeling ok, but there is an outstanding LOR that is troubling.

Happy to finally report DS18 submitted 6 or 7 EA apps today!! And hist first quarter ends in a couple of days so that will allow his a little time to breathe. He has 4-5 RD apps in the works. Needs to finish by early Dec. per his school’s “orders.” I know many of your kids are already done with the process - huge congrats to you and your kids!

Congrats @CA1543. We hope S18 gets the 11/1 apps in. Though he’s catching up on 1 hour worth of sleep from last night due to so much school work.
I hope to be in you shoes later this evening.

@mommdc Great idea and I did call today and left a message asking for a PDF of her unofficial scores. Problem is, Collegeboard has been extremely unresponsive to everyone since last week. I lost about 8 hours of my life last week on hold with them and my emails that are more than a week old are still not responded to.

@suzy100 and @glido I emailed both schools as well. She’ll be fine at Indiana University as we’d already submitted earlier scores that are sufficient for admission, but the Honors college application did confirm that scores need to be in their hands by November 1st. They have old scores too, so I’ve asked if they’ll move her application to regular decision if the new scores aren’t received in time. This one is a stretch for her, so the new scores are important for their consideration. We will see what happens!

good luck @cardinal2020mom – it does feel good. But your son’t really needs that sleep I am sure to function so that important. I thought my DS21 would go down to the wire as his brother did on some last year but he was ready to submit. Thankfully not a lot of supps in this batch.
