Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

So happy to say that my S18 has all EAs due 11/1 submitted with one big exception: a possible binding ED that he is still wobbling over. It’s nice to have the others done because it is a result of his main essay finally being finished. By 12/1, this application process will be all done, finally, barring any unexpected additions!

S18 submitted ED and EA app last night, and had previously submitted one EA and one rolling app, so now all his early apps are in. He’s admitted to the rolling one (only took a couple of weeks to hear), so has one acceptance to take off some pressure, but will feel much less pressure once he hears from any of the other three he’s submitted, which are all high on his list.
Three more for him to work on before New Year’s for sure (unless the ED comes through before he’s done with them, which would be delightful as it’s his best fit), and possibly a couple more.

Question on NMSF/F merit scholarships - do they have to do anything other than put that college on their NMSF/F paperwork as first choice? I am talking about places like UA and Baylor that seem to be automatic for NMSF/F

D18 is on the Common App right now, checking status on a straggling LOR and it’s running at a snails pace. She’s timed out several times and can’t get in. Looks like the procrastinators out there finally got going

@Veronica02 Yep, my procrastinating DS18 is really annoyed at the Common App slowness right now. Meanwhile my stomach is churning…

Hey! EVERYONE! Get off the CA “freeway”, my D is ready submit her REA. Gosh darn it. East Coasters it’s bedtime already. :!!

You definitely don’t want to see me mad. >:/

@sushiritto LOL its the procrastinating East Coasters who are still trying to submit - same as the West Coasters logging on? maybe the Westers can log out for a few minute so Easters can upload their essays and be done, ack!

I am sending positive vibes to all the students and parents working hard to hit that 11/1 deadline!! I feel for you! :-SS

My D got a fee waiver today from Redlands (yay!) it’s an EA app due 11/15 that she has ready to go but was holding, turned out waiting was a good thing! But I won’t let her wait too long… she tried to go into the common app tonight(without telling me, I knew better!) to apply the fee waiver and like has been reported, she just couldn’t do anything and was completely frustrated. I told her to stop trying, leave the common app alone for the kids who are desperately trying to finish their 11/1 apps and do it on 11/2. She agreed, and was reluctantly grateful for all the pressure I put on her to finish her 1 EA 11/1 app last week. But it was a near thing for her, I know very well how easily we could be in a different set of shoes, and I am stressed for all the kids here dealing with the last minute crunch!

We have a straggling LOR as well. D is trying not to stress about it, but… The teacher told her it would be done by last Friday, and when D checked on Friday, no LOR. So she followed up today, teacher not at school today. ~X( But the woman in the GC office who makes sure everything gets submitted to the common app thru Naviance, was on Ds side, expressed how uncomfortable it made her that the teacher had pushed it so late, BUT that D should not worry because D had done her part and the school had already sent everything else, colleges are pretty forgiving of somewhat late LORs she said. I agree with her in this instance, and I told D so. However, D plans to follow up with an email to the teacher and will be hunting her down daily I’m sure until the thing is submitted.

:bz :bz :bz <— This is my emoji for positive vibes, happy little bees doing a happy, productive, dance!

HHHMMM…we too are unable to login to the Common Application at our house. DD was checking on the status of teacher evals and she is told the login page in unavailable…Not vital to us at the moment, but gosh I hope ya’ll are not experiencing issues!

People are posting about it on Facebook. Apparently now there’s a message saying they are taking it down completely for 2 hours? Yikes.

The Common App login page now says they’ve taken it down for 11:30PM-1:30AM. But DS17 didn’t see that - only suddenly got through - and in theory submitted somewhere after 11:30 - but sure hope it made it in??!! (PS Up there I mistyped, only have one dear son 17, not 18 yet)

It is 2017 right? The Internet has been around awhile, hasn’t it? :-?

Yikes people! I hope my bees didn’t send the wrong vibes dancing into the world!! @-)

@MDSparkle you were actually correct the first time! On CC the protocol is D or S followed by HS grad year, not age. It’s tricky for our Y2K kids who are class of '18, but on this thread we all have a D18 or an S18, sometimes both! and a few of us also have a D or S17 as well! But following the example, I also have D22, who is not 22, but 13(for a few more months anyway).

I hope your S app made it through! Seems he was one of the lucky ones tonight!

I’m very happy to report that D’s REA app has been submitted just after 11PM tonight. Next up one EA app that’s needs one more supplemental essay to be finished.

We have a front runner in the college sweepstakes!

I don’t want to jinx it. But we had a long talk in the living room late last night right before bed - these talks happen randomly, so I do everything in my power to stay awake for them, lol. It is down to two, that are opposites in nearly every way. If she doesn’t get into one, she is “definitely” going to the other one. If she does get into both, she’ll have to decide, but I have a feeling …

During the conversation, she kept coming back to the one where she is already accepted. We talked about all the tours and every time she mentioned something she liked, it turned out to be that school. We will definitely go back for another visit after the first of the year. I wrote down that she would hear in November about a scholarship day in February so maybe we can do a Friday/Saturday if she’s selected. She just gets this look on her face when she talks about this school. I think it would be a great fit for her.

Hope everyone was able to hit submit last night. I can’t wait till we start posting where our kids are going!

Well my procrastinator was ready to submit last night–and then could not get on Common App! Ugh. Looks like others got in, so I’m hoping we find a window of time today to get it done.

Happy to report S18 finally submitted 2 EA apps last night! I was so worried we would be doing it at the last minute. We had no trouble getting on CA but it was earlier in the night. Hope everyone is able to get in today.

So D still hasn’t submitted the last app due Nov. 1, and I come here this morning to see posts about problems with the Common App which is precisely what I’ve been afraid of. Is 8:00 a.m. too early to start drinking?

My D is up and about and back to school. The first four days had me very worried about how she was going to recover but then she really bounced back.

She has submitted two apps with a third coming soon now that LORs are in.

It was very interesting to see the effect the forced break had. It was total stress reduction, and she was more relaxed and talkative than she’s been in a long time. She asked to make a college visit to a school close by since she was still forbidden to do schoolwork, and it turned out to be very worthwhile.

She even asked to do take the SAT again.

I thought she was done, done, done with testing.

She’ll have to decide in the next 24 hours since the December test is the last one. Maybe her friends are starting to talk about testing and she’s becoming more motivated. I just don’t want her to end up in the same situation she did with the August SAT when she was working two jobs over the summer and had no time to prepare.

Congratulations to all the kiddos who applied EA/ED. D is done with her ED and 4 EA apps. Need to do 1 more EA …hopefully tonight.
