Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@RoonilWazlib99 – D18 knows of at least five other kids in her school who are doing REA to S … and we’re way the heck over here in Atlanta. Maybe S’s acceptance rate will fall below 1% this year! Where’s that Onion piece?

BTW, I’m totally sold on the fit thing. I think her stats and stuff put her in the does she fit in here category when the AOs are making decisions. If she gets rejected then it probably means it wouldn’t be a good place for her.

Wow - I really hope this did not happen to anyone else since midnight is rapidly approaching on the West Coast. My son left his ED (binding ED) application until the very last day . . . he did submit it earlier today through the Common App. The green check appeared indicating the app was completed, he had written all of the supplement questions, all seemed good.

A few minutes ago, I asked to see the email from Common App before I went to bed and it said something like: Thank you for your application. Don’t forget to submit your supplemental answers. He thought the answers were already submitted since he had typed them in and the application showed as complete (green check). Thankfully, there was time to go back in and submit the supplemental answers.

So relieved to say that all EAs and the one ED are in. How can that be? We still have 30 minutes to spare!

@pickledginger, the EXACT same thing happened with my D! She had written the supplemental essays, but on the PC she was using, she couldn’t see the “submit” button at the bottom, so she didn’t hit it. We realized this several days later. I’m very surprised she was able to submit the app without those, since they were required. In any event, we figured it out several days before the deadline so they were submitted in time. WHEW!

@ak200008, what were the final steps? Just hitting submit? I think you should be OK but I’d call the school today and ask.

Now that the early decision apps are in, What’s the next topic to vent over? Lousy financial packages?

D16 is at a state college. They gave us nothing for the first two years. Now that her EFC has been cut in half (and well below their tuition costs) can I hit them up for a few need based dollars next year?

Talking to my S21 last night about college S18 overhears me talking about a college OOS I couldn’t get him to apply to. Asks why he didn’t apply. Idk, you said you weren’t interested. Ends up applying (kids are so easy).

@JerseyParents You’ll have to let me know if there any developments in financial aid with having two in college and one in an state school. I’m assuming NJ…In two years I’ll have two in college and there’s a good chance one or both of them will be in state with TCNJ and Rowan most likely.

Yes the writing supplements have to be submitted seperately as well as any portfolio materials (if applicable). Common app sends out seperate received emails too for each of that component. That was surprising for us too.

@suzy100 Apparently after making the payment there was another screen where certain check boxes needed to be checked and submitted. We didn’t notice this screen for a while. By the time we submitted it it was after midnight. The whole mess was due to the fact that we were using chrome browser. Apparently the submission process wasn’t working in chrome. We had to switch to IE for successful completion.

At a state school, where they don’t give instititutional grants, your EFC would have to drop enough to qualify for state and/or federal aid. Or the student might be able to get departmental scholarships for continuing students.

So try a few net price calculators on NJ (public) school websites with that lower EFC or estimated income and one/two in college and see if you see a NJ state grant.

I think the NJ state aid site has a NJ TAG estimator.

Haven’t posted much, but have been following along. Congrats to everyone getting their apps in for the Nov. 1st deadline. Thankful D did hers about a week ago to beat the rush. Things have definitely slowed down for us. Marching band season ended a week early due to not making it to state finals. That was a let down, but at least it gave us a little more free time. D still has an app due Dec. 1st with a few Honors essays so hoping to get that done in the next couple weeks so she can relax for awhile. I’m still on the fence about the FAFSFA. I don’t think we need it for merit at the schools she is looking at so really just don’t want to mess with it. I’m really enjoying reading about everyone’s journeys through this whole process!

@mommdc yes I found it - thanks Calculated a big fat zero Fun part is that S18 going to a private school will have his need based award reduced when S16 graduates

have to remember to budget for that AND tuition increases for the boys junior and senior years

Sigh of relief. D18 was accepted to her ACTUAL safety school this morning (not the in-state ones she applied to but doesn’t want to attend). Now she has somewhere to go she can get excited about if it comes to that.

CONGRATS @amominaz. That helps ease the pressure

@ak200008, I think I’d call the school and see what they say. Hopefully they will say it’s no big deal.

Congratulations to your D, @amominaz!

Ok now you guys have me nervous with all this “extra button” talk. Sure hope S did it correctly.

I have a non-college-related complaint. Got my homeowners insurance renewal offer yesterday and the price went up 35% from last year’s premium! And this was after a 30% increase the year before. So I had to spend hours shopping for new insurance. I’m still waiting on the last quote but for the same coverage I’ll be paying less than last year’s premium, possibly substantially less. I don’t know if my current carrier is being punitive because they had to pay for a roof replacement in 2015 (covered hail damage) or if they just want to get out of the insurance market in my area. Either way, buh-bye Arrowhead via Geico! And I’m mad at Geico too, for letting this happen, and am shopping around for new car insurance. So far nothing has been cheaper but maybe the last quote will be a winner.

Ouch, @traveler98, that is crazy! Hope you find something reasonable.

We have State Farm, we have Auto, Home and Life with them so we get a multiline discount.

D accepted to Pitt - hooray! She will be excited about this one. We will need to get some major merit aid to make it affordable, but here’s hoping!
