@DavidPuddy Whoop! Congrats to DP Jr!! A&M will send him a cool acceptance packet with his letter and TAMU #22 banner - it’s all pretty fun! Check out twitter #TAMU22. If your son decides on TAMU, or if it is high on the list, he only has 30 days from acceptance to get priority housing (guaranteed on campus) otherwise he will move to the end of the list. There are lots of housing choices, but the good ones fill up fast.
What’s his major? My son is going there next year and will be studying Physics.
This is my last child going through the college admissions process, but I’ll pop-in to say hello to my Parents of the HS Class of 2018 friends on future-year threads.
I’d like to say that I’ll be happy to share all of my knowledge with you, but it’s very likely that I’ll forget most of what I know by then !! :))
@MACmiracle, if he goes to McDaniel he should have his car there by sophomore year (presuming he’s willing to work a few hours a week and pay some expenses). Westminster isn’t far enough from our house for us not to be paying the full rate for his insurance. That would make getting to Baltimore a lot easier. It’s only “western MD” in the same way Rockland County NY is “upstate”. Maryland is such a long state going east and west that it’s more central or eastern. Its old name, Western Maryland College, came from the Western railroad rather than its location. I’ve read that’s one reason they changed the name. It’s not as convenient to a big city as he is now (we live inside the DC Beltway), but it’s hardly isolated. He’d prefer to go to Fordham, but a) it isn’t likely he’ll get in and b) it’s very expensive. McDaniel is likely to come in at somewhere between 18-24K per year.
Dream reach school sent confirmation email reply to D that her form was received and that her application has been switched to ED. And now we wait!! #:-S
Is it mid-December yet?? (Oh wait, I don’t want time to go any faster than it has to. Please don’t leave, D!!!) :((
I want to freeze time, because at least today, tomrroow and the next, I believe D has a legit shot at her REA. After 12/15, I realize the odds are lottery long, and the possibility of acceptance will be gone. So, I like to slow this time down and continue to dream and think D has a shot at the “big time” or the “show.”
We seemed to have run into a snafu with DS and the Alabama scholarships. He doesn’t have the ACT yet for the Presidential but qualifies for one of the lesser ones. I checked to see why we hadn’t received anything and it seems they recalculated his weighted GPA. I’m all kinds of confused as I understood they went by whatever the highest GPA was listed on the transcript. In reading CC I think the problem is his HS calculates on the 6.0 scale. I can’t find anywhere on the UA website that says they recalculate weighted GPAs. His unweighted GPA does not meet the requirements.
Meanwhile we wait for the ACT score release on Monday. He’s feeling pretty good about it but it may be a moot point if we don’t get the GPA issue resolved. I could almost throw up. He’s worked so hard on getting his ACT up so we could afford Bama. I read and researched and never saw this issue coming.
In other news he has been accepted to Texas Tech and received the Presidential scholarship.
@daffodilpetunia adding recruiting of sports in to the college search is intense. I am doing that right now with 2018 and it’s so hair pulling at times.
Question: (I wanted to ask on the main board but did not know where to put it so I will just get your OP-if you don’t care) Back when I was in college is was normal to take 18-20 credit hours a semester. 12 was required for full time as current rules but I knew no one that took less than 15 most took 18-19 hours. So, we were at a tour this weekend and they suggest NO one take over 15 hours in a semester. What are you all suggesting your child to take? Has college rules changed that much?
Any hopeful future UT Dallas McDermott scholar parents want share their kids videos? PM me! I’ve been scouring YouTube for some of this years videos and there are some really good ones this year! I found two that I’d say are just outstanding, I think ds’s video is more on the average side.
@TexasMom18 , I’m so sorry to hear about the unexpected hurdles! D’s school only goes up to about 4.2 weighted (and that’s for a kid with a 4.0 UW taking all Hon and AP classes). Seems like schools really vary with this. Good luck with the ACT and Congrats on the Presidential Scholarship!
My son’s school doesn’t weight at all! I have been crossing my fingers hoping the admissions counselors recognize that his 3.95 is actually really good considering he is in the full IB diploma program and they don’t weight!
For those that have added acceptances to the big thread, how do you do it? I tried to copy the previous post and add my S’s information in, but it said the post was 2,000 characters over the limit and wouldn’t let me post it.
Our school is on a 100 point scale. I’ve always wished that we were on a 4.0 scale. I’m so tired of seeing kids stress out over 97 vs. 98. Most schools that use the the 4.0 scale seem to call 94 or 95 an A and it doesn’t matted if you have a near perfect grade or not as long as it’s good enough.
@birdie3 I am guessing my daughter will take 15ish - she will be in nursing so you pretty much take what they tell you, but it will be heavy science with labs.
My first semester in college I took 19 credits and nearly died. After that, I was around 15-16 a semester.
