Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Add S18 to the list of kids who were notified by University of South Carolina today that they were accepted. The letter says that he will receive in-state tuition (we are OOS) and additional merit, but that the full offer will be communicated later. I have heard great things about the USC Honors Collegebut he is not sold on the location. Congrats, everyone!

@DavidPuddy the acceptance sounds a little anti-climatic, but congratulations!

And @pickledginger congratulations to your son too!

@LMHS73

That makes sense to be, except that I’ve seen multiple reports here on CC, from reliable posters, of NMSFs receiving a letter in late Jan/early Feb, saying something to the effect of, “If you are named NMF you will get the Presidential Scholarship.” This is without an invitation to interview for the full tuition scholarship, and I’m not clear if admission to USC is stated or implied.

A hearty Congratulations to all of the CC crew who received good news today! It’s truly uplifting to read about each of these journeys unfolding. And as was mentioned, I mean it with all sincerity when I say that I, too, appreciate the sounding board we have in this forum, in addition to the valued support. Last but certainly not least, this forum has been such a wealth of information because of all of the fine folks willing to share their collective experiences and advice.

Cheers to the Parents of the HS Class of 2018 - a bunch that I will sincerely miss when it comes time to go through this again in two years! =D>

D18 was admitted to U of A today. The only in state school she is remotely looking at. I still think she would go OOS to a school where she has a full tuition scholarship, but it’s always nice to have an in state option in case she decides she just can’t stand to be that far away from her amazing parents

S18 is attempting to rally from wisdom teeth removal and make it to class tomorrow, having abstained from the drugs this afternoon. We will see in the morning if he makes it. But with multiple tests, homecoming dance on Sat, and theatre club obligations to attend to, he has powerful incentives. I guess I will at least wait until the weekend to remind him about 11/15 and 12/1 college app deadlines.

@Kayak24, I expect t be right there with you in two years with my S20!

Well the odds game has been a big help. I made my son do the odds to see if he came up with something similar. What it told us was that if he doesn’t get into his ED, there were 3 schools that really remained possible and 4 that were “in the field” - a small percentage of less than 10%. With all of his time pressures we are thinking that he will spend time to finish up the 3 that are most likely, and perhaps hold off on doing the 4 in the field untill after ED notifications. I know its advised to do them all beforehand, but the odds are even lower on that.

@Kayak24 Several of us here are also on the 2020 thread.

Add me to the 2020 crew too. And then thankfully, I will get a break before my youngest go through all of this college stuff.

@stemmmm, I also told S about the odds game we parents were playing on this thread, and it also led to a good discussion about his thoughts on the matter. It can be so difficult to draw these kids out without overwhelming them!

Yup, 2020 here too, thankfully my last!

I will be there with you again as well …

I haven’t been there yet, but I guess I ought to take a look at the 2020 thread too.

The 2021 thread is quiet right now for me.

@bearcatfan , I haven’t looked at that one but I’ll be on the boards for S20 and D21. Glad to see that I’ll have the company of some great CC colleagues!

No update on the Kayak saga today, unless no word back from ED Dream school re: document receipt plus no word back from GC from whom we requested executed document is an update.

@mstomper I’m trying to catch up here and I noticed your high chances in McDaniel.

I haven’t visited McDaniel but I’ve been in the area now twice recently, and I’ve really think people in western Maryland are the nicest people around. There’s also a lot if shopping in the Westminster area, so anything you would need would be available. So it seems like a nice combination of convenience with rural beauty nearby.

I’m not doing odds now. I think there are 4 schools at least, maybe even 6, tied for first place. One visited D’s school yesterday and re-affirmed the first place ranking. We are visiting another first place school this weekend, so we’ll see whether that does anything to shake up the list.

I have a 2021 who has no idea where she wants to go to college, but she’s making a soccer highlights video for a college showcase tournament coming up, so I’m saying maybe I’ll get both of them into college this fall. (Note, no actual chance of the soccer player getting recruited, really.)

@ShrimpBurrito - thanks, I haven’t seen that part about all NMSFs possibly receiving a letter in Jan. Well, I guess we’ll find out soon. I can’t believe that these (once very distant) decision points will be coming-up very soon!!

I don’t think our family can swing the 1/2 tuition deal unless there is some other favorable news in the financial aid offer. From the NPC numbers, USC (and Northeastern if I remember correctly) thinks I’m a lot richer than I think I am.

I mean, come-on - I drive a 2001 Honda for crying out loud !!
