Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Thanks, @AmyBeth68! She is performing as Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, so it’s a great show to end her MS/HS string of performances. They only do musicals in the fall, but they plan to do a new musical review event in January and then the big rock n roll performance in March. It was a lot of fun to watch her perform last weekend, and all of our local family were able to attend which made it even more special for her - DS16 even drove home from college to watch her!

Happy to report that DD wrapped up her final application submission this weekend! She was going to visit her top choice on Wednesday for a student for a day event, but has been so sick the past week, missing school, that she’s decided to cancel since it’s in the 40’s here. On the upside, that allows her to attend an on-site admission event that one of the in-state schools is hosting the same day at her high school. It’s one of her safety schools, but still, would be nice to have 1 acceptance in hand (fingers crossed)…and receiving it in person seems like it would be pretty exciting! It’s offered to students who have already completed their applications and meet test score/GPA criteria that are up in the top 75% for the school.

@Booajo you have plenty of company over here! I’m thinking about looking at some geographically desirable schools with no essay requirements and just having her do them. Better than nothing.

D submitted an app and responded very unenthusiastically to the question about how much she wants to attend. She has one setting: completely honest. She should never go into sales.

She also made a surprise app over the weekend after getting an email from the school and doing some research. It seems like a perfect fit school for her in many ways. She ideally wants a religious school and this one is, just not exactly our religion. 8-}

We will visit and see if she feels welcomed and accepted.

Long time, no check in - this board moves so fast!

My son applied ED to UPenn as well as submitted apps to Fordham, TCNJ, Rutgers, UConn and University of Maryland. He is holding off on any others until we hear about UPenn, though George Washington is probably his 2nd choice. Is that normal to wait until you know about the ED?

As far as scholarships, I don’t even know where to start. This year has been insane, with DS being asked to join marching band (to play an electric violin solo!) in his senior year - so that was a huge time commitment on top of 5 AP’s, 5 leadership positions, orchestra, etc. And holding onto his rank. I want to say I can’t wait until it’s all over but that means it will be almost time for Senior year to be over, and I’m not ready for that either.

I also feel like he’s the only one not hear from any school yet, though I know that’s not true. But I just see acceptances all over the place and we’re just waiting… all just a big ball of stress around here!

@Kayak24. Following along your D’s extended ED deadline journey. My D was offered an extension to ED at a school because she attended their fly in program. It is a wonderful school but not known for merit so she will apply RD. (Her decision) She believes everyone that did the fly in got the extension.

Things are quiet here, too, although I am living vicariously through many of you. :x

Waiting to hear about two more nursing decisions, and expect an honors college invitation in the email soon (admissions said to watch her email the end of November). It’s down to these three schools, so now it’s getting interesting.

I wish I knew something more about financial aid, but that won’t come till January.

:-?

@greentea3 ,
Hi! Thanks for the info. Would you mind sharing any more details, such as when and how the extension was sent? Sounds as though it wasn’t confirmed that the extension is related to the fly in, just suspected? Thsnk you for helping me in my quest to piece together this puzzle and much luck to your D! =D>

@Booajo similar place here. Did some EA apps but still have a boatload to do, all the ones she really cares about. Sunday we talked and decided she would complete the app for the school she fell in love with 3 days ago on our visit. Last night I watched her stare at her phone as time ticked away. This morning I brought it up gently and got ‘I got this’.
Maybe we could do musical chairs with the offspring during the process. I’ll prod someone else’s kid

We know we won’t hear from D18’s top choice until mid-December whether she got in. D16 applied there and got her acceptance on December 17- we kept all her letters. They don’t actually send out acceptances until after the close of applications on December 1. It’s driving us crazy having to wait because it’s really the only school she wants to go to. She has the same credentials as her sister- 35ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, number 1 in her class, NMSF so far so I don’t know why she wouldn’t get in but I’m still worried! I just want her to be happy.

Does anyone else feel that the phrase “when you’re/I’m in college” has become part of almost every discussion?

“Yes it sucks that your math teacher didn’t warn you in advance that your class work that day was going to be graded, but when you’re in college that will happen so you’d better learn to deal with it.”

“I’m so glad you came out to dinner when Dad and I invited you. When you’re in college we will take you and your friends wherever you want to go when we visit you.”

S: “At least when I’m in college the professors won’t treat the students like children.”
Me: “Unfortunately some will still treat you like children, although hopefully not many.”

And so on. It’s a catchall. Part soothing (“sucks now, but when you’re in college you won’t have to worry about that”), part wistful (“will the dogs remember me when I’m in college?”), part warning (“you think everything that irritates you will magically disappear when you’re in college but it will not”), and a big part excited (“it’s going to be so awesome when I’m in college!”).

I just got an email that another app was submitted…great! But I’m waiting for the in-state safeties…

@MACmiracle make sure those schools are added to the FAFSA

@MomtoCon @bearcatfan Also feeling like we’re the only ones without decisions. Amongst D’s friends, very few have heard anything but then I come here and feel like we’re the outlier…I guess I have a love/hate relationship with this Board. Great source of info but sometimes it stresses me out unnecessarily :-SS anyway we will be one of the last to know - she’ll have two decisions in Dec and then they’ll trickle monthly after that but her top choices won’t be in until mid-March.

D is finally in the homestretch with her apps, submitting her last 4 this week. For a girl that was slow to start, particularly on the essays, she is finishing up like a champ. The essays seem to roll more easily now, and all told, she has written 31. She has 6 or 7 basic essays and most of the rest are variations on them except for those darned “why us?” which require a new essay.

Winter sport is starting up so for both D18 and S21 so we’re going from one type of busy around here to another :bz Albeit this busy will be a lot more fun. And bittersweet. She plays her sport for the last season after 13 years… =((

S18 submitted to his 7th and final school just last night. He’s done 1 scholarship/honors app for a safety as well, and 1 for an outside scholarship. And he is fortunate to already have 1 acceptance (to USC Columbia - South Carolina). He won’t hear from his top choices until late Jan. He does still have a lot of scholarship applications to fill out. We have a high EFC, so I am encouraging him to apply.

I hear you on the sport thing, @Veronica02. I’m seeing a lot of mixed emotions with my D, who is in the throes of her last swim season. Scary and freeing to think about closing that chapter after all those years, no doubt.

@traveler98, that’s a frequent topic at our house, too. I also find myself teaching D every little life skill I can think of. I panicked at one point this weekend because although D does her own laundry, I wasn’t sure if she knew about the lint screen on the dryer. I called D away from her homework so I could show her how to clean the lint screen. “You CANNOT leave the house without knowing how to clean the lint screen!”

Yesterday I started tracking down old photos of D, as we’ll need them for sports banquets in the spring. (Both her club and HS team do slide shows of all the seniors.) Hoo boy. All the cliches: It seems like yesterday, time goes so fast, don’t blink, the days are long but the years are short… :frowning:

@mommdc Thank you! I still haven’t done the FAFSA even though I got all the financial info organized to do it.

We used H’s car last weekend and it shook and rattled so violently that I felt like I was in the Apollo re-entering earth’s atmosphere. He had offered to let me take his car on the trip but after that experience, no thank you. I honestly worried if it would be safe given D’s recent concussion.

He’d been talking about needing a new car but I think it’s a necessity if there is a reason for the shaking that can’t be fixed.

And my van is making a funny noise and is in the shop right now.

So last night I got to thinking it was good that I haven’t done the FAFSA if I have to pay for car repairs and possibly a new used car.

@melvin123 I know we can’t be alone, but everyone else seems further down the road–except S18 does have that one friend who has done literally nothing and yet has a reach-heavy list. So we are “beating” him. @swtaffy904 My puzzle is that the current list of schools that need doing include 3 of his top 4 (Vanderbilt scholarship application, Richmond, CMC) and yet can’t move the boy at all. And now adding 2-a-days in his sport–where will he find time?

FAFSA/Financial Aid Headache…we filed an amended return this year after one of our investments sent an updated number. Apparently the FASA/IRS Data retrieval tool does not pull the amended return. Got a notification from DD2016’s school to please forward an IRS transcript AND signed copies of the amended 1040x return. Only the online IRS transcript request system in not working nor is the telephone request system so you have to request via mail with 4 - 6 week turn around. Hoping the down IRS system was just a fluke. Even more annoying is that our FAFSA EFC is > than the tuition at any of the schools. So we are not looking for federal aid just trying to qualify for the merit scholarships. DD2016’s school required FAFSA when she applied to qualify for merit aid, fortunately, after talking to them on the phone, it appears that that will not require the documents requested in order for her to continue to receive her merit scholarship. Now wondering how much I am going to have to straighten out for DD2018, I have already gotten a notice from LSU requesting additional docs.

@labegg do you have an IRS office nearby? I think you can get the transcript there.
