Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I’m getting a check for the retroactive part of a raise from this year in January. That will definitely jack up our numbers for next year.

@Veronica02 I completely understand that feeling of the final “season” in a sport played for most of their lives. My D18 walked off the field for the last time a week and a half ago and Thursday night is their Awards Dinner and Senior Recognition. It’s very bittersweet but I can also tell she is feeling at ease with a little more time to work on her crazy AP classes and get a little rest for the weary muscles. I hope it’s a wonderful season for your Daughter!!! Enjoy every second of it :).

Parents need your thoughts/advice here’s the story: 3 weeks ago (I think approximately) my daughter’s Portal for the University of Delaware changed from the normal application in review status to Streamers & Confetti and a vague reference to being accepted (by vague I mean she could put her deposit down via a payment button/link). There was no official Congratulations. No link to a letter. No email. No updated comments on her portal about her major or the status of her Honors Application etc. Nothing. Just the aforementioned. So we waited a few days…contacted admissions who brusquely said just check for updates but yes she’s been accepted. (hooray I guess?). Well I’ve learned via CC that kids who were accepted received a hard copy letter in the mail a week or so after. Her portal still remains in limbo, she never got a letter and another email to Admissions goes unanswered. Should she continue to reach out to admissions or is that being too pushy? I know patience is a virtue but it “feels” like something is off with her acceptance and status. I know there are a few others here that may have applied to Delaware so curious if you are in the same boat?

@amominaz Agree that could be hard and difficult to prioritize. I think if we were in that situation it would seem wise to make sure you prioritize honors/housing/scholarships apps at at least one true safety school (acceptance and financial safety) over everything at all stages of the process. Even if you don’t think that is where your kid will end up, you have to have a back up plan.

In our case the safeties became the favorite schools so we aren’t there. But I have an essay weary kid too so I can totally empathize!

@AmyBeth68 , I think if I were you, I would try to call again. Part if that is because I know you are also feeling some stress about the Pitt merit decisions. It might help to try to settle at least one of those questions.

I need car repairs. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that I will have a safe van to take D and I across the Alleghenies next week. The long trips will be at night and it will be reassuring to know it’s been checked out and is in good shape.

And we were told, we might get another 100,000 miles out of it. 320,000 miles. Now that’s an exciting goal!

And between this and H needing a new car, our EFC much go down about 5 cents. =))

ETA: I know we talked about the hatch problem because a couple of you had your hatch shocks wear out, too. I have a walking stick to hold it up, like someone here used a broom. But I am breaking down and getting it done for my sanity, or whatever is left of it. The thought of someone getting hurt is just too much of a risk for me to deal with right now.

@AmyBeth68 I would call too, or ask GCt to call to “clarify acceptance” for school record. UDel is one of D18 top choices, HAS NOT APPLIED YET, too many essays…our only experience with Rolling was Pitt and hard copy of letters were very timely and communication was easy. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect some follow up, since UDel was not up against the early deadlines like some other places that may have been swamped with ED and EA…best of luck to your daughter!

@shrimpburrito Doing the same with photos (when I should be working haha). The parents put together posters for the senior child and this is a very emotional and bittersweet activity. I am looking forward to the dinner…she found out last week she got both County and Conference recognition which is always a nice way to end a season. Funny thing is the Science Honor Society induction is the same night down the hall soooo it will be a bit hectic running back and forth haha!!!

@MACmiracle haha I must be very transparent about my stress over Pitt merit. I mistakenly thought with her stats she’d really be in the running but it seems every kid is literally 36 or 35 ACT or 1550+ SAT. She’s so close but yet so far! I think my stress is her stress…second guessing essays and all that goes along with that. Oh well. Since UDel is #2 choice it would be nice to see them show her a little love…at least a formal acceptance rather than a brusque message haha. I will have her call them when she gets home. Always better for the student to do it I guess.

@MPT3D thank you for the advice…I think the whole comparison with Pitt’s communication and efficiency is what makes this a bit frustrating w/ Delaware. Clearly everyone on here can see patience is not my best quality

@AmyBeth68 I like nice, helpful kindness. I don’t like calling colleges and dealing with brusqueness or coldness. I always think, if I am dealing with this attitude now with admissions, what’s it going to be like when I have a financial aid problem after she enrolls?

That’s why I love Etown so much. They are always super pleasant and efficient. There were few problems and when they happened, one friendly phone call would fix it.

Of course we all have bad days, but generally life is easier when people can be nice to each other.

@MACmiracle E-Town was one of the nicest colleges we visited. I loved their warmth through the entire process. Despite my D15 not attending I will say it was one of our all time favorite visits. Great atmosphere for sure!!

Hi Bearcatfan you may find this guest blog post on SDN I stumbled across on SDN useful in demystifying the MMI process for you: https://www.studentdoctor.net/2017/08/top-8-strategies-to-prepare-for-and-ace-your-multiple-mini-interview-mmi/

@AmyBeth68 I’m rooting for you and your D!

We were in your shoes in 2014. Pitt was my D’s #1 choice, but we have 3 kids, and we couldn’t afford it even at instate prices. She got her scholarship letter in December and it was a long wait.

Today I would give a kings ransom to know if #2 DD has been admitted to TAMU (or Clemson). It is creating quite a bit of stress for DD and just knowing if TAMU is even an option would alleviate quite a bit of stress.

I know it seems silly and superficial/ridiculous, but I can see it is really weighing on her and her BF. It used to be kinda funny watching them dance around the college issue, now it just seems to be a wall that gets a brick higher everyday. They are so happy otherwise and seem to be able to keep their head buried in the sand about it in general, the moment someone/anyone mentions college, you can see the sparkle in their eyes diminishes just a bit. The wait until February is going to be sooo long (especially because the app has been in since August). I am in the TAMU is not going to happen boat. But my goodness how many issues could be solved if they just accepted her!

Also it would make some x-mas gift shopping a tiny bit easier, too.

@labegg When it came time for my D’s college decision, I was going to buy a bunch of hats and/or sweat shirts of each school that was in the “final competition”, just like those recruited athletes do with their utube videos. And then place them on a table and video the whole thing.

Of course, one of the hats would be a McDonalds fry cook hat. =)) Yes, always the joker.

@labegg - TAMU isn’t rolling application? I thought I have seen other people have acceptances from TAMU?

@amominaz you have seem TAMU acceptances, from auto and academic admits. TAMU is sort of rolling in that those types of admits hear first. Unfortunately DD is not auto admit with her 14% class rank and not an academic admit with her 27 ACT (the cutoff is a 29, she retook and only bumped to 28 even superscored) So, she is a review admit, they hear last and the prospects are not good.

@labegg - oh, got it. Best of luck to her. It is crazy what kinds of grades and test scores kids need for college these days.

I have been traveling and apparently nothing has been accomplished on college applications. I will be having a heart to heart tomorrow night about where she really wants to go. Sigh.

I think rolling admissions has to be the worst. We may be waiting until March but at least we have hard dates.

@ollie113
I hear you. Sometimes “inaction” is a discrete choice. I wonder if DP Jr will ever submit that “last” application I mentioned in my last post.

@labegg Aww that is so tough and my heart goes out to your D. I am rooting for her to get in, that’s a tough situation.

@lollydobber85 There are schools on our list that won’t consider for merit without css. It’s a pain but worth the effort in my book.
