Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

^Yes, Meningococcal ACYW refers to the conjugate Men shot that is recommended for 11 and 16 year olds (Menactra, Meneva), not Men B.

For vaccines I think you need to look at a particular school’s requirements, not just the state requirements. Ohio State, for example, has a list of vaccines required if the student is going to live in a dorm. https://housing.osu.edu/resources/vaccinations/

This is one of the threads that prompted me two years ago to look into the Men B shot.

(Warning: Discount anything on that thread posted by a poster named very closely to a big west coast state.)

I will have to check with D pediatrician. She just had a complement of Men vaccines and had quite a reaction so hoping she’s fully dosed up. Not excited about going through that again but will if she needs it.

My D’s got their first meningitis shot at 11; the pediatrician explained it’s timed that way because meningitis is a risk when kids start traveling in herds as they do in the pre-teen and teen years. Living in a dorm is like living in a herd, isn’t it?

My D just got her first official acceptance yesterday along with the top level of merit. I thought she would show some sign of happiness, but no.

We saw the specialist yesterday and he wants D to scale back until she’s not having anymore symptoms. There’s a big list of accommodations for school.

Of course, there’s stress in not being able to get everything done you’re supposed to. But she is also someone who gets satisfaction from working. So this is very hard on her.

She clearly has a number one school where I’m confident about acceptance and the automatic merit will make it possible. It would be nice for her if that acceptance came in soon.

Bless you, @CaliDad2020 ! >:D<

I think I remember reading that USC’s president hosts a large dinner for Thanksgiving orphans as well. It’s a very nice gesture.

@ShrimpBurrito - as long as it isn’t the medical school dean the kids are probably safe. :open_mouth:

@ShrimpBurrito honestly, it’s our favorite thing. We’d do it every week if the kids had time.

For those of you worried about your kid away over “short” holidays, no kid gets stranded. We (and many others) love having the kids out. Most have multiple offers as most college students want “reinforcements/allies” at their family table. Got to go - more aerobeds to inflate…! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

I’m inflating the aerobeds here too! Older daughter is bringing two college friends home with her - one male and one female. I love having the guests! My only concern is where I’m going to put all of the food and drinks, since I’m also hosting Thanksgiving dinner. So much food, so little room - and I’ve got an extra fridge even! It’s a good problem to have though.

Also, congratulations to your D, @MACmiracle. I’m sorry she’s still having such a rough time. :frowning:

I’m going to share something nice and positive. The college we visited over the weekend has offered to reimburse us on our hotel expenses. I think that’s a very thoughtful gesture. :x

@MACmiracle Yay! I hope the scholarship competition went well.
I am sorry things are hard for your D, but soon it willl be TG break and then a few weeks off for Christmas.
Hopefully she can get some rest then.

The fall musical was great and it was so nice to see S and his friends all being part of it.
Now they will get ready for the Christmas chorus concert and District Chorus Festival.

He had a very good first quarter report card, even an A in math.

D should be home later today for Thanksgiving and has only about 3 weeks left of the semester left.

@mommdc I read that about the musical on another thread and it sounded awesome. I hope he and his friends have a chance to continue performing.

Thanks for reminding me about the breaks coming up. Healing is variable but the important thing is to take it easy and that will be a lot easier with the breaks.

There were a lot of kids there for the exam. I got to chat with other parents who were almost all local, down to earth, and friendly. Even the admission staff was much more low key than what I am used to.

The test was supposed to be very difficult but D didn’t seem fazed by it. It was long, though, and she was tired afterward and not particularly interested in exploring the campus.

I was worn out by the drive, and that is something to think about going forward. I don’t think D particularly wants to deal with planes either. I’m starting to think a three and a half hour driving radius might be best if it could happen. We’re fortunate that we probably have hundreds of colleges–including D’s favorite–within that distance.

@MACmiracle thanks! I was a blubbering mess and so proud! My S is pretty quiet and rarely sings at home, so to see him in his element on stage was something else.

Yes, I am not a fan of long car rides either. I picked up D on Saturday so she could see the musical, and then took her back on Sunday, that was a lot of driving even if it’s just 2 hours each way. And on the way home it was snowing heavily in places too.

Good conversation today about the meningitis immunization requirements; very informative - thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge on the subject!!

Today we are thankful and relieved that DD2018 has been accepted at Texas A&M University - College Station!

I confess that I was convinced she would not be offered full admission as a holistic review admit. (TAMU’s freshmen class is made up of only roughly 2300 (10%) holistic review admits) and was completely unprepared for it to come before January! She was stunned, in a good way!

While this has lifted a huge weight from our family’s collective shoulders, I will now worried about the pressure she is under to decide if she will remain here in Texas (and close to home and the BF…). I can say that a savings of roughly $80k for in-state vs. OOS tuition sure is appealing!

@labegg , a HUGE Congratulations to you and your D!! What a wonderful early surprise!! =D>

Congratulations @labegg !

Great news @labegg! Congrats to your D <:-P

Fantastic news @labegg! What a wonderful Thanksgiving for you all!
