Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@CaliDad2020 - good point about additional years. While she may not get around to many for this upcoming academic year, I can give a little more pressure next year!!

@CaliDad2020 Great points

Re: cars, we still have a '96 that works (and an '86 that doesn’t :slight_smile: )

@traveler98: RE: UTD and cars…I am thinking about this too. I have a 2014 Honda Accord it perfect condition with 50,000. Do I pass this car on to D when she goes to UTD in 2021 when the car is 7 years old? or get her a used low milage Civic? i really love my Accord and keep my cars till the wheels fall off too.

Very happy to say that my son finally submitted his UC applications last night (day before the deadline). USC merit deadline is tomorrow, so it is possible that one will be done tonight with a whopping 24 hours to spare. American is the only other school that he really feels interested at this point in that he hasn’t applied to yet. I’m hoping he can get that in very soon and be DONE!!!

As for cars, count us in the drive until they die camp. You guys have us beat, though, because our oldest one is a 2006. We put a lot of commute miles on the cars.

Lastly, we are visiting a school across the country this weekend and I am hoping for a very good experience. My son has been offered a great scholarship there. Fingers crossed that he likes it! I wish we could go mid-week, but it just can’t happen at this time of year before finals.

@CaliDad2020

Maybe a dumb question but sounds like you have experience re additional scholarship opportunities - where do you find them listed?? Over and above merit, I see some listed on a given college website. Other sources?? Thx

@my2caligirls My D got a list from her GC.

Congrats on ASU @ShrimpBurrito !! <:-P <:-P <:-P

And congrats to everyone who’s been getting the app phase “done” or at least some of them done :wink: @sushiritto that UC app is no joke, if she got it done before today I say give her the credit for all 6 schools! =D> my kid took one look at those essays and said how about those CSUs?

We are still waiting on the packet in the mail with (hopefully) her merit award from Whittier. D is checking the mail every day this week, very impatient to get the confirmation that she has an affordable small school in the bag! One of her friends got hers this week but we aren’t sure when she applied/got accepted and she said it took a long time for it to arrive. So more waiting. Meanwhile we should have at least portal news from another school tomorrow based on the school’s published dates! Things are happening! :-bd :-SS

Yesterday, S and some fellow theatre kids were moving set pieces in an outdoor, covered storage area at the school when they heard little cries coming from inside a movable staircase. They investigated, and found a tiny kitten, ears and eyes still closed.

S called me immediately because he knows I’ve raised bottle babies before. “Mom, you have to come! It’s a kitten…”

What else could I do? I fired up the Catbulance. DH was wheelman; I took shotgun, armed with a box and some towels I warmed under my shirt on the way. I told S to keep the baby next to his skin until we could get there, and to watch the spot where they found it in case another one showed up.

The baby is a black and gray marled tabby, somewhere around 10 days old. We stopped to pick up kitten formula, then swung by the vet.

They found a second kitten later that night. We don’t have it yet because a girl found it and wouldn’t let S have it. My gut is telling me that we’ll be picking up the other baby today, and I just hope that’s soon enough.

Me? I’m wearing a shirt stained with formula, the baby won’t sleep unless it’s on me, and I got up twice in the night for feedings. I’d kind of thought I was past all of that! :wink:

Kidlet has named the first baby Tim, and the second one will probably be called Neezer.

S left some food and water for the mama today. We’ll try to get her, too, but she hides in a storm drain if humans try to come anywhere near her.

Bless you, Dia! I’m such a sucker for baby animals. :(( :x

@DiotimaDM That is so sweet!!! Good luck to the little babies (and to you as their caregiver).

@1822mom sending all the good vibes on that merit letter to arrive…we’re awaiting one from Udel ourselves!

@my2caligirls my D’s HS puts outside scholarships on the guidance page with due dates, linked etc. Maybe there is something on her HS website somewhere?

@1822mom Well, my D has only had like 3-4 months to complete the darn UC app. I actually suggested adding a 6th UC, since so many folks have had positive things to say about Irvine. But, and it’s a big but, D’s level of interest in the other UC’s, after Cal and UCLA, drops precipitiously.

One BIG thing that aggravates me is that D isn’t checking her portals often enough. She’s too busy for that. :(( I told her I’d do it for her, but my help with the process extends only to my credit card and editing/reviewing essays.

Love that story, Dia! Good luck!! :x

Reading @DiotimaDM story while listening to “Silent Night” really put me in the Christmas spirit just now.

@my2caligirls

My kid found them various spots: HS GC, then, at college there were some posted someplace (not sure where, they were pretty self-sufficient there.) Also, on-line there are tons. Takes a bit of research, but you can find a number of good lists depending on interest etc. My kid is in engineering so they concentrated on those.

Ok, one last pro tip: make sure your kid checks whatever email they put on the Ap. Many kids put a personal email on the application, then forget to check and miss interview opportunities etc.

Hi. I am new to this forum. Thanks for all the great comments! This is our second time going through the college application process. Compared to D#1, this one is a completely different ballgame. D#2 has applied ED to Boston U. We are hoping for good news very soon! She received an email from the FA dept. at BU today, asking to clarify some details from our CSS Profile. I had read somewhere else on this CC that at BU for ED, the college apps are read first, then are passed on to FA if they are a potential “fit” with the school. Does anyone know if this is true or a common thing that colleges do, particularly for ED? My D, and myself, are feeling positive that it is a good sign.
In the mean time, she has submitted to 6 other schools, 2 with Rolling admissions and 4 RD. She also has a possible ED2 school if the BU ED doesn’t work out.

@DiotimaDM I can’t live that enough! Thise poor baby kittens!

I hope the girl who took the second one is taking good care of it! Or gives it to you.

Please keep us updated :slight_smile:

LOL at “Catbulance” @DiotimaDM! Please keep us updated. :slight_smile:

@Ripley2b2b, welcome!

“I had read somewhere else on this CC that at BU for ED, the college apps are read first, then are passed on to FA if they are a potential “fit” with the school. Does anyone know if this is true or a common thing that colleges do, particularly for ED?” I have never heard that, but maybe it’s true. I think conventional wisdom is to NOT read anything into communication from the FA department. I do hope that your D is admitted, good sign or not. Good luck to her!

Regarding scholarships, I work w/ my kids’ high school college counselor to update an annual scholarship guide for seniors - listing local, state and national scholarships. We have a, “Check here for additional opportunities” list, including these sites - there are a ton!

By way of introduction, my daughter applied to 5 schools (1 ED; 4 EA) by October 22, and we are eagerly awaiting responses. She’s into Clark University w/ a $20,000 annual Traina scholarship (and a coach interested in her for playing volleyball), but has high hopes for good news from her ED Ivy. Applied to only one CO school, as she wants to go East.

(And when I say “we are eagerly waiting” I mean she’s pretty chill, but I basically obsess about it daily. Forcing myself to keep busy - I work part-time from home - and really get myself occupied with other things/tasks/projects, as I am spending a LOT of time lurking on CC. Have got to not be on Internet so much and thinking about “when will the acceptances arrive already” so much, as will likely make the next 2 weeks drag on… off to mend some clothing and divert mind w/ silly TV!)

D got accepted to Rowan’s College of Engineering with an invitation to apply for honors.

I can’t believe it…I’m just really in shock. Wow.
