Why the misdirection, Whittier?! Congrats to your daughter, @1822mom!
My 9th grader got her first soccer recruiting email from a college coach. Very exciting! But don’t take all my kids at once!

Fantastic news, @1822mom! Woot!
@amominaz, I apologize if I came across as a know-it-all, I didn’t mean to. My nephew went through the Questbridge process, so I learned some from that, and then I also had a kid go through EA/RD process a few years ago.
Anyway, no decisions here yet - hoping to get good news in two weeks or so - and still about 5 more apps to go. We can do this, people!
@suzy100 - Oh I didn’t mean it snarky at all!! I posted it here after doing a cursory look then actually LOOKED and saw that you can’t “double dip” with ED and RD at the same school. I guess I am just mentally preparing myself for the possibility of what to do if D18 doesn’t get accepted ED
@1822mom - BIG CONGRATS to you and your D !!!
@1822mom Congrats! How exciting on the scholarship offers, choice is good!
Today, I asked my DD if her longtime friend had submitted her planned applications to some of the UC schools ( UCLA, USC, UC Berkley…nevermind that she is unlikely to be admitted to those schools due to her stats and the selectivity of those schools) last night. DD told me she didn’t think so, that her friend was still working on them. I said that the app deadline was last night. DD texted her friend to ask, friend replied the apps weren’t due until January…
My DD has been nagging her friend for months to get ALL of her apps done by December 1, just to be safe. I am good friends with the Mom and have been gently nudging them through the whole process too, so they are aware of deadlines and such. Last month we got them to submit an app to LSU after much hand holding, which was the friend’s safety and literally has to be one of the easiest apps out there. The friend is an LSU legacy and has been accepted, so at least there is one school in her pocket. I suspect that this friend is doing a bit of self sabotaging as far as the rest of her apps, you can’t get rejected if you don’t apply, right? It is surprising because she has said all along that she wasn’t particularly interested in attending LSU. At this point that is her only option! Her Mom, my friend, does not know the UC app deadline has been missed. Her Mom thinks several other apps have been submitted, but according to my DD there have been no other apps done. Back when they did the LSU app the Mom made a snarky comment about the daughter having to attend our local CC because apps were not getting done. I am going to have to back away from the whole college discussion with them because I think it is going to turn ugly very soon. DD is very worried for her friend’s future.
@1822mom one more congrats to you and your D.
OK. Who had the “under”? D’s USC app was submitted at 8:20 PM. She beat 9:30 PM. I guess I underestimated my D’s desire to go out with her friends tonight. :-??
@labegg I’m so sorry your D’s friend is blowing the applications. I think it’s truly scary for some of these kids, whether it’s fear of rejection or fear of putting your childhood behind you. It certainly sounds as if she is self-sabotaging. In any event, she was accepted to LSU, which is a fine school. So she does have somewhere to go next year, although right now it sounds as if she might prefer a gap year. It’s amazing how much kids will mature between now and May, though, so she might be ready to commit then. But I agree, you don’t want to be too involved when the implosion comes. Sorry!
@sushiritto – Gotcha beat! D18 submitted her USC app around 11pm. She had a bad case of writer’s block on one of the essays but finally completed it. The other one took less than an hour (it was really good, too). USC is her top choice and I think that came through in her essays. Fingers crossed!
And yay sushiritto! Another one finished!
@1822mom - CONGRATS! So happy for your D! Those are some big scholis, just wonderful news. Faith in this crazy process is restored!
Taking a deep breath b/c we have a long wait before hearing from D’s tops schools. Pouring another glass with @stemmmm
@droppedit We were literally screwing around with one essay. A verb here, an adjective there, duplicate words in the same paragraph, yada, yada, yada. ~X(
@melvin123 Thanks! Yep another one in the hopper. And I believe there’s another one right behind it that’s not due untill January. We’ll see.
I’ll tell ya what. Having an acceptance in our pocket would be really nice right about now. But we only get answers to two this month.
Congrats to all on the good news!
I won’t be on here much this weekend. Nutcracker. Ugh.
My poor kid was at the venue until 9:30 last night (after a full day of school) and plans to be up at 7:45 to get some homework done before needing to leave around 10 a.m. Should be home around 7:30 tonight, just to do it again tomorrow (two performances).
I plan on letting her take most of Monday off of school, and just go in for physics. She doesn’t think she will miss anything major, and her AP Calculus teacher is a gem and will catch her up.
Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be dancers …
@bearcatfan my D21 and D25 are in Nutcracker this weekend so I feel your pain. Enjoy the performance, best of luck with those tough classes, and Nutcracker recovery. Will she continue dance in college?
D18 almost dropped ball on scholarship app due yesterday and there are still a few with Jan deadlines that may not get done. I feel bad for these kids trying to balance the necessary heavy courseload, and sports and ECs. I think/hope things will be different for D21with earlier testing, more essay prep/scholarship info the summer before senior year, so that there is a little less angst…
Good news alert, after yelling about following through and checking portals etc. D18 received notification that another scholarship app was complete and being moved on for regional consideration. SUPER longshot, but nice to have some small reward for all that work.
Happy Saturday and I really appreciate the information and support provided on this forum
@MPT3D She will not dance in college, except if she wants to take a class just for fun.
One college she is considering is dangerously close to the professional company she often dances with, lol. The other one she’s considering offers a world-class ballet performance major. Not that she is that good, but it’s easy to get sucked back in lol.
Congrats @1822mom! Glad to hear the app was submitted @sushiritto!
S18 says he is “definitely” writing the next essay this weekend. I will believe it when I see it. I have resigned myself to the fact that he won’t get serious until he gets deferred or rejected from his EA reach school. He had an interview with dream school recently and felt it went really well but I think most of the interviewers are very nice to the kids so I don’t want to read anything into it. DH says I am too pessimistic - I prefer realistic.
@Momma2018 - That’s how it is over here. My H says I’m too pessimistic and I think he is still looking at colleges from back in 1992. I would be happy to be wrong on this one! The competition is just so fierce even with top scores, etc. Trying not to get my hopes up for anything.
@momma2018, I’ve also been called pessimistic by my DH (on things both college-related and not). I say that I prefer to have realistic expectations. Is it pessimism if you almost always turn out to be right? :))
I agree with you that a properly trained college interviewer should be nice to all the kids and help them feel positive about the school. In your place I’d probably react the same, congratulating my S on an interview that went well but not reading too much into it. Hopefully your S does get into his EA dream school!
@amominaz - Exactly! I keep telling DH that he and I would not get into our college if we were applying now.
Thanks @traveler98! I will be glad to be wrong if he does get in - and to take the money we would have spent on RD applications to go out for a nice dinner!
